For a supported target, check that the alert is enabled, the place you are testing is not a Trusted Location, and Find My notifications are allowed.
First, check what device you want to be notified about
Apple Watch’s Find Devices app lets you select a device and configure Notify When Left Behind for that device. If you want an alert when the Apple Watch itself is left behind, note that Apple’s Find My feature list for Apple Watch does not include Notify When Left Behind. The watch can serve as the interface for setting an alert; that does not mean it is a supported target for this alert. Apple notes that Find My features vary by country or region.
For a supported target, use Find Devices on Apple Watch or Find My on iPhone to open that device’s notification settings. Apple’s guide to separation alerts explains the iPhone setup flow, and Apple’s Find Devices guide for Apple Watch describes setting an alert for a selected device.
How to check Notify When Left Behind
- On Apple Watch, open Find Devices and select the device you want the alert for. Alternatively, on iPhone, open Find My, tap Devices, and select that device.
- Open Notify When Left Behind under the device’s notifications and turn it on.
- Review the Trusted Locations for that device. These are places where you can leave it without receiving an alert. Remove or revise a location only if you want alerts at that place.
Apple’s wording is: “You can also set Trusted Locations—locations where you can leave your device without receiving a notification.” See Apple’s instructions for Find Devices on Apple Watch.

Allow Find My notifications
Find My notifications must be allowed on the device that receives the alert. Check that Find My is permitted to send notifications in that device’s settings. Apple’s iPhone guide says: “Important: In order to receive separation alerts, make sure you allow notifications for the Find My app.” Read Apple’s separation-alert instructions.
Check setup and location sharing
Apple says a separation alert can only be set up from the device sharing your location. Its guide lists eligible setup categories including iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS or iPadOS 15 or later; a Mac laptop with Apple silicon and macOS 12 or later; and supported AirPods with the Find My network turned on. These are general requirements, not confirmation that a particular account or device is configured correctly.

What to do if it still does not work
If you have selected a supported target, enabled the alert, checked Trusted Locations, allowed Find My notifications, and confirmed the setup conditions, Apple’s reviewed guidance does not prescribe a universal reset or repair for this symptom. Check that the devices and account are configured as intended, then contact Apple Support for case-specific troubleshooting. Do not assume that restarting, unpairing, erasing, or replacing a device is a guaranteed fix.
