But it is not Baselworld under a new name. The two events differ in scale, governance and public-facing format, and the 2026 figures show that Watches and Wonders is far smaller than Baselworld was at its peak.
What the latest numbers show
The Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation says the 2026 edition brought together 65 exhibiting brands and nearly 60,000 visitors. In its April 20, 2026 results release, the Foundation reported nearly 60,000 unique visitors, up 9%; 25,000 tickets sold across the three public days, up 9%; 1,750 journalists, up 9%; and 6,000 retailers. There is a small but important difference between the announced and reported exhibitor totals. In September 2025, the Foundation said the 2026 edition would feature 66 brands, including 11 newcomers. Its later account of the completed show gives 65 exhibiting brands. Those are two separate official figures; the available information does not explain the change. For context, Fratello’s retrospective puts Baselworld at about 650 exhibitors in 2018. That is roughly ten times the 65 brands reported for Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, but the figures come from different sources and years, and may not use identical counting methods. In what sense is Watches and Wonders a “Baselworld 2.0”?
The analogy works if it means that the industry has a prominent annual focal point again: a place where brands present new watches and retailers, journalists and other professionals gather around the same event. Watches and Wonders occupies much of that role in today’s watch calendar. Calling it “Baselworld 2.0,” however, is an interpretation of its prominence—not an official description or evidence that the old fair has simply been recreated.
Its growing public program also gives the Geneva event a different character from a trade gathering alone. The 2026 format combined four professional days with three public days, alongside activities across the city, including workshops, craft demonstrations and youth-oriented programming. The Foundation has described the event as both an industry gathering and a cultural and educational experience. Foundation president Cyrille Vigneron described the intended balance this way: “The success of Watches and Wonders Geneva shows that watchmaking can be exclusive but not excluding, inviting but not banal.” That is the organizer’s stated ambition; whether the event feels accessible in practice is a question for visitors and participating brands.
Where the comparison breaks down
Scale
At about 650 exhibitors in 2018, Baselworld was operating at a scale well beyond the 65 brands the Foundation reports for Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026. The newer event may be highly visible without being an equivalent in size. The comparison also concerns different years, so it does not by itself show how either event grew or declined over time.

Governance and whose event it is
The Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation says it was created in September 2022 on the initiative of Rolex, Richemont and Patek Philippe. Chanel, Hermès and LVMH joined its Foundation Board in 2024. That structure places major brands at the center of the event’s organization. It helps explain why the fair is a significant showcase for luxury watchmaking, while also raising a reasonable question: how broadly does it represent the watch industry beyond the brands that participate? The published information establishes the Foundation’s structure, but does not establish that Watches and Wonders speaks for every segment of the industry.

Public access and purpose
The 2026 edition explicitly included three days open to the public after four professional days. With 25,000 public-day tickets reported by the Foundation, public attendance is a substantial part of the event’s format, alongside the retailers and journalists who attend for professional reasons. The city program adds an experience beyond appointments and product launches, though it does not make the Geneva event identical to Baselworld in its earlier form.

A separate watch and jewelry fair called Basilia is planned for Basel in April 2027, co-organized by MCH Group and Informa Markets. Hodinkee reports that the organizers explicitly said Basilia is not a return of Baselworld. MCH Group Exhibitions and Events CEO Roman Imgrüth put it plainly: “Baselworld is no more. Basilia is therefore evidence of a planned new event in Basel, not proof that Baselworld has been revived or that it will rival Watches and Wonders. In the cited report, its participant list had not yet been announced, so its eventual exhibitor mix and scale remain unsettled.
How much bigger might Watches and Wonders become?
The Foundation’s September 2026 press kit announces 75 exhibitors, including 13 new brands, for Watches and Wonders Geneva 2027. It schedules the Geneva program for April 5–11, 2027, with public tickets due to go on sale February 9, 2027. These are plans announced by the organizer, not completed results. The announced increase suggests the fair is seeking to broaden its lineup. Fratello has raised cost and organizational flexibility as potential pressures for a growing event, but those are industry concerns, not proof of current failures. Whether the event can expand while accommodating more of the industry and preserving its stated visitor experience is still an open question.
