Is your smartwatch band secretly toxic? Not necessarily: some bands contain PFAS-associated chemicals, especially fluoroelastomer bands, but testing has not shown that every Apple, Samsung, or Google band is toxic or that ordinary wear causes disease. Apple and Google disclose fluoroelastomer models; Samsung’s reviewed documentation does not support a blanket classification.

The concern comes from a study of 22 commercially available smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands. Fluorine appeared in all 13 bands advertised as fluoroelastomer, while PFHxA—the most frequently detected individual PFAS—appeared in 9 of the 22 tested bands, according to the American Chemical Society’s study summary.

The most defensible consumer response is precautionary rather than alarmist: check the exact material description, treat “fluoroelastomer” as a reason to consider another band, and choose a compatible alternative with clearly disclosed materials. Do not interpret a chemical finding in band material as proof that a particular wearer will become ill.

Key takeaways

  • A study reported in 2024 screened 22 smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands; 13 were advertised as fluoroelastomer, and all 13 contained fluorine, according to the American Chemical Society’s December 18, 2024 research summary.
  • PFHxA, or perfluorohexanoic acid, was the most frequently detected individual PFAS and appeared in 9 of the 22 tested bands in the cited study.
  • Apple’s Ocean Band and Google’s Pixel Watch Active Band are officially described as fluoroelastomer, but the available study summaries do not confirm that either exact product listing was tested.
  • Samsung’s reviewed materials document identifies stainless steel in some Galaxy Watch components and band buckles, but it does not provide enough current, model-level information to classify every Samsung strap.
  • Choosing a clearly disclosed nylon, woven, recycled-polyester, metal, or silicone alternative is a precautionary way to reduce potential exposure, but no broad material category in the available evidence can be promised to be universally PFAS-free.

What did the smartwatch-band study actually find?

The smartwatch-band study found fluorine and specific PFAS-associated chemicals in some commercially available bands, particularly bands marketed as fluoroelastomer. The finding is important because smartwatch bands remain in prolonged contact with skin, but the study tested materials rather than people.

According to the study summarized by the American Chemical Society on December 18, 2024, researchers screened 22 commercially available smartwatch and fitness-tracker bands across brands and price points. Thirteen bands were advertised as made from fluoroelastomer, and all 13 contained fluorine. Two of the 9 bands that did not advertise fluoroelastomer also contained fluorine, so a label is a useful screening signal but not a complete chemical guarantee.

PFHxA was the most frequently detected individual PFAS in the cited study. According to the study researchers, as reported in the American Chemical Society’s 2024 summary, the highest PFHxA concentration reported in the cited study summaries was 16,662 ng/g. The researchers also detected multiple PFAS groups through targeted and non-targeted analyses; those are measurements in band material, not an estimate of a wearer’s absorbed dose.

Study finding Reported result What the result does—and does not—show
Advertised fluoroelastomer bands 13 of 22 bands were labeled fluoroelastomer; all 13 contained fluorine. Fluoroelastomer labeling identifies a category worth scrutinizing, but it does not prove that every fluoroelastomer product has the same PFAS profile.
Bands without a fluoroelastomer claim 2 of the remaining 9 bands contained fluorine. Absence of the word fluoroelastomer is not proof that a band contains no fluorinated chemistry.
PFHxA detection PFHxA appeared in 9 of the 22 tested bands. The study found PFHxA in material; it did not measure how much PFHxA transfers to a particular wearer.
Highest reported PFHxA concentration 16,662 ng/g, according to the cited study summaries. The concentration cannot be assigned to Apple, Samsung, Google, or another named brand without a model-to-result crosswalk.

The corresponding author, Graham Peaslee, said: “This discovery stands out because of the very high concentrations of one type of forever chemical found in items that are in prolonged contact with our skin.” The statement, published in the American Chemical Society’s study summary, explains why the material finding deserves attention; it is not a clinical diagnosis.

The available evidence does not establish how much PFHxA transfers from a specific band to a specific wearer through skin, whether PFAS from a particular band reaches the bloodstream, or whether ordinary wear of a particular band causes disease. The cited research is material testing, not a clinical trial or population-health study.

Why does fluoroelastomer matter?

Fluoroelastomer is a fluorinated synthetic rubber used in some watch and fitness-tracker bands. The 2024 band study found fluorine in all 13 tested bands advertised with that material description, making “fluoroelastomer” a reasonable term to look for when a reader wants to take a precautionary approach.

Fluorine detection and PFAS detection are related but not identical claims. Fluorine screening can indicate fluorinated chemistry, while targeted analysis identifies particular compounds such as PFHxA. The study found PFHxA in 9 of 22 bands, including the broader set tested, and found fluorine in two bands that were not advertised as fluoroelastomer. The PFAS Central study summary provides additional context on PFHxA in fluoroelastomer watch bands.

Are Apple Watch bands toxic?

No blanket claim that Apple Watch bands are toxic is supported by the available evidence. Apple’s official product information identifies at least one band—the Ocean Band—as fluoroelastomer, which places that product category within the material concern raised by the study.

WOCCI 20mm Adjustable Nylon Watch Band, Quick Release Sport Loop Strap (Army Green)
  • Material: This band is made of durable double-layer nylon weave and the nylon fabric is crafted from cotton woven material which is exceptionally soft and light, making comfortable to wear.
  • Band Width (Size): Standard 16mm, 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm, 24mm. This watch band is compatible with all watches (including smart watches) with above band width. To determine the right size, use a ruler measure the interior distance between the two lugs on the watch case.
  • Adjustable: Fit wrist 14.5cm-22cm (5.7-8.6 inches). Adopt an durable Hook and Loop closure which can be cycled (opened and closed) thousands of times, allowing the watch to be fastened or adjusted in seconds.
  • Quick Release Design: Quick release spring bars allow you to easily install and remove the watch band without tools. You just need to slide quick release knob with finger.
  • Washable: This one-piece strap can be washed when it gets dirty because its color is a permanent ink that will not fade. Ideal for sports and everyday use.

Apple’s cited Ocean Band product listing identifies the band material as fluoroelastomer and the hardware as titanium. That disclosure is enough to tell a precaution-minded buyer that the band uses the material category associated with the study’s fluorine findings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The disclosure does not prove that the exact Ocean Band listing was one of the 22 samples. The accessible study summaries do not provide a complete brand-and-model crosswalk, so the study’s highest reported PFHxA concentration cannot be assigned to Apple’s Ocean Band. Apple Watch bands as a whole also cannot be described as toxic based on this evidence.

Is the Google Pixel Watch Active Band made with PFAS?

Google officially describes the Pixel Watch Active Band as fluoroelastomer, but the available evidence does not prove that every Google band contains PFAS or that wearing the Active Band causes harm.

Google’s official Pixel Watch specifications identify the Active Band as “fluoroelastomer with soft-touch coating.” The Google Pixel Watch specifications also list other band categories, including a silicone Sport Band, recycled PET yarn or recycled polyester-and-spandex textile bands, stainless-steel bands, and leather bands on some Pixel Watch generations. Google’s Active Band product information likewise describes the Active Band as fluoroelastomer.

Those official descriptions establish the materials Google discloses for particular band categories. They do not establish that the exact current Google Active Band listing was included in the 22-band study, and they do not make silicone, textile, stainless steel, or leather an automatic PFAS-free choice. The study’s detection of fluorine in two bands without a fluoroelastomer claim is why product-specific disclosure still matters.

Are Samsung Galaxy Watch bands made of fluoroelastomer?

The available Samsung documentation does not support a blanket classification of the current Galaxy Watch band range as fluoroelastomer, silicone, or PFAS-free. Samsung’s reviewed materials document is less specific and less current at the model level than the Apple and Google disclosures cited above.

Samsung’s document on materials in Galaxy smartwatches that come into contact with skin identifies stainless steel in parts of Galaxy smartwatches and in band buckles. The document also warns users with sensitivities to listed materials to take care to avoid hypersensitivity reactions. The document does not provide consistent, current material specifications for every Galaxy Watch strap.

That means the evidence is not symmetrical across the three brands. Apple and Google provide clear official examples of fluoroelastomer bands; the Samsung materials document reviewed here does not justify labeling the entire Galaxy Watch band lineup either safe or toxic. A Samsung owner should check the exact model and strap listing rather than infer the material from the brand name.

Does PFAS detection mean a smartwatch band is toxic?

No. PFAS detection establishes the presence of a chemical in tested material, not a proven disease outcome from ordinary wear. “Toxic” is too broad unless the statement specifies the chemical, exposure route, dose, and health outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Presence: Fluorine or PFAS-associated chemicals were detected in some tested band materials, including PFHxA in 9 of 22 bands.
  2. Potential exposure: A band worn for long periods has prolonged skin contact, so transfer from material to skin is a reasonable research concern.
  3. Proven harm from ordinary wear: The cited study does not establish a wearer’s absorbed dose, bloodstream exposure, disease outcome, or personal risk percentage.

Regulatory attention also should not be confused with a band-specific health verdict. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s January 9, 2024 announcement, seven additional PFAS were added to Toxics Release Inventory reporting requirements. Reporting and monitoring rules show regulatory concern, but they do not determine whether a particular smartwatch band will make a particular wearer sick.

Should you replace your smartwatch band because of PFAS?

If reducing potential PFAS exposure is a priority, replacing a band explicitly labeled fluoroelastomer is a reasonable precaution. Replacing the band is not an evidence-mandated medical response for every wearer, because the cited research does not establish disease from ordinary wear or show that every fluoroelastomer band has the same chemical profile.

  1. Check the exact material disclosure. Use the official product page, packaging, or manufacturer documentation for the exact band and model. Look specifically for “fluoroelastomer,” rather than relying on a generic label such as “sport band,” “rubber,” or “performance band.”
  2. Use fluoroelastomer as a warning sign, not a laboratory result. Avoiding an explicit fluoroelastomer label can reduce a potential exposure concern, but a missing label does not guarantee the absence of fluorinated chemistry because two non-fluoroelastomer-labeled samples in the study contained fluorine.
  3. Choose a clearly disclosed alternative. A nylon smartwatch band or woven band is a practical replacement category, provided the listing clearly identifies the material. Nylon should not be advertised or assumed to be universally PFAS-free without product-specific evidence.
  4. Verify compatibility before buying. Check the watch model, connector or lug design, band width, wrist size, and whether the replacement is suitable for the wearer’s water and sweat exposure.
  5. Separate skin irritation from PFAS questions. If a band causes redness, itching, pain, or another reaction, stop wearing it and seek medical advice when appropriate. A skin reaction can have many causes and is not proof of PFAS exposure.

Which smartwatch-band materials are the most sensible alternatives?

No material in the available evidence can be called universally the safest or universally PFAS-free. The best decision combines clear material disclosure with independent evidence, compatibility, comfort, durability, and the wearer’s own sensitivities.

Band category What the available documentation supports PFAS interpretation What to check before buying
Fluoroelastomer Apple’s Ocean Band and Google’s Pixel Watch Active Band are officially described as fluoroelastomer. The study found fluorine in all 13 tested bands advertised as fluoroelastomer; avoid this label if minimizing potential exposure. Exact material wording, model identity, and whether the seller provides any product-specific testing.
Nylon or woven textile Nylon and woven bands are direct replacement categories; Google’s official specifications list recycled PET yarn or recycled polyester-and-spandex textile options. Neither nylon nor woven construction is automatically proven PFAS-free by the cited study. Fiber composition, coatings, compatibility, connector design, adjustability, and cleaning instructions.
Silicone Google officially distinguishes a silicone Sport Band from its fluoroelastomer Active Band. Silicone is a relevant comparison category, not a chemical guarantee; two bands without a fluoroelastomer claim contained fluorine in the study. Exact composition, manufacturer disclosure, fit, sweat and water suitability, and any supported chemical claim.
Recycled polyester or recycled PET textile Google’s specifications list recycled PET yarn and recycled polyester-and-spandex textile bands for some Pixel Watch products. The documentation does not establish that every recycled-polyester or PET band is PFAS-free. Specific fiber blend, surface treatment, watch compatibility, and care requirements.
Metal or stainless steel Google lists stainless-steel bands, and Samsung’s materials document identifies stainless steel in some watch components and band buckles. The cited band study does not provide a blanket PFAS conclusion about every metal strap, clasp, coating, or insert. Metal composition, coatings, clasp materials, weight, fit, and sensitivity to listed metals.
Leather Leather bands are documented for some Pixel Watch generations. The available evidence does not establish a universal PFAS-free claim for every leather band or finish. Exact leather and backing materials, coatings, generation compatibility, and care requirements.

How should you compare a replacement band?

Material disclosure should come first, but material alone is not enough to choose a usable band. Use this checklist when comparing replacements:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Material disclosure: Is the exact band material stated by the manufacturer, or is the claim only from a marketplace seller?
  • Fluoroelastomer status: Does the listing explicitly use that term, or does it use vague language such as rubber or sport material?
  • Evidence quality: Is there a manufacturer declaration, independent test, meaningful certification, or only an unsupported “chemical-free” claim?
  • Comfort: Compare breathability, softness, weight, adjustability, and the amount of surface area touching the wrist.
  • Durability: Check suitability for sweat, water, abrasion, and the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
  • Compatibility: Confirm the watch model, connector design, lug width, and wrist-size range.
  • Chemical claims: Treat “PFAS-free” as a claim that needs supporting test methods or certification, not as proof supplied by a generic material name.

What evidence is still missing?

The central unanswered question is whether a specific band transfers a meaningful amount of PFAS to a specific wearer during ordinary use. The available summaries do not identify whether the exact Apple Ocean Band, Google Active Band, or any particular Samsung strap appeared among the 22 samples, and they do not provide a complete model-by-model PFHxA table.

  • Easy to Change: The quick release springs make it a breeze to install on your watch, no tools required
  • Applicable Wrist Length: The strap length is 75mm+125mm, thickness: 2.2mm, suitable for wrists ranging from 15.5cm to 20cm (6”-8”)
  • Size Selection: Compatible with traditional or smart watches with standard lug width of 18mm, 19mm, 20mm and 22mm. Please accurately measure your watch lug width before ordering. Size=Watch Lug Width

More useful evidence would include a verified manufacturer-and-model crosswalk, independent testing of the exact retail product, migration testing that measures transfer to skin-like materials, exposure studies that estimate absorbed dose, and health research that evaluates outcomes in people. The cited study’s material findings justify further investigation, but they do not provide a quantified personal-risk estimate.

No verified consumer testing service was established in the research used for this article. Any future independent PFAS testing or watch-band fluorine screening should be presented as material verification, not as proof that an individual band is medically safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does fluoroelastomer contain PFAS?

Fluoroelastomer is a fluorinated synthetic rubber, and some fluoroelastomer smartwatch bands tested in the cited study contained PFAS-associated chemicals. The study found fluorine in all 13 tested bands advertised as fluoroelastomer, but that result does not prove that every fluoroelastomer band causes harm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Apple Watch Ocean Band safe?

Apple’s Ocean Band is officially described as fluoroelastomer, but the available study summaries do not confirm that the exact Ocean Band listing was tested or establish that wearing it causes disease. A reader who wants to reduce potential exposure can choose a clearly disclosed compatible alternative.

Is silicone safer than fluoroelastomer?

Silicone is a reasonable alternative category to compare with fluoroelastomer, and Google officially lists a silicone Sport Band separately from its fluoroelastomer Active Band. Silicone should not be treated as automatically PFAS-free because the study found fluorine in two bands that were not advertised as fluoroelastomer.

Should I replace my smartwatch band because of PFAS?

Replacing a band explicitly labeled fluoroelastomer is a reasonable precaution for someone who wants to minimize potential PFAS exposure, but the available evidence does not require every wearer to replace a band or show that ordinary wear causes disease. Check the exact material, compatibility, and any product-specific testing before buying a replacement.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Some smartwatch bands contain PFAS-associated chemicals, especially when they are made from fluoroelastomer. Apple and Google officially disclose fluoroelastomer bands, while the Samsung documentation reviewed here is less complete. If you want to minimize potential exposure, choose a clearly disclosed compatible alternative—but chemical detection is not proof that your particular band will make you sick.
