ISO 6425 is the international standard for diver’s watches: it sets design requirements and test methods, not just a water-resistance number. ISO’s current catalog lists ISO 6425:2018 as the current fourth edition, reviewed and confirmed in 2024. Its scope covers watches designed for diving to at least 100 m, with a secured dive-time measuring system visible in darkness. A “100 m water resistant” marking alone does not establish that a watch conforms.
What ISO 6425 means
ISO 6425:2018, titled Horology — Divers’ watches, specifies requirements and tests for diver’s watches, including saturation divers’ watches for deep diving. ISO’s scope says it applies to watches “designed to withstand diving in water at depths of at least 100 m and equipped with a secured measuring system to indicate the diving time, which is visible in darkness.” ISO 6425:2018 catalog entry
The 100 m figure is a threshold within the standard’s scope, not a complete definition of conformity. ISO 6425 also addresses how dive time is indicated and other design and performance requirements. A depth marking, the word “diver,” or a rotating bezel by itself is not proof that a particular watch meets the standard.
What the dive-time indicator must do
The standard allows different kinds of indicators, including a rotating bezel, a digital display, or another device. The indicator must be secured against inadvertent handling and let the wearer read dive time with a resolution of one minute or better over at least 60 minutes. The preview also describes visibility checks. In darkness, readability is checked from 25 cm after light exposure, including the time, dive time, five-minute analogue markings, an indication that the watch is running and, on battery-powered watches, an end-of-life indication. The dive-time indication must also be legible in ordinary light at a minimum illumination of 50 lx.
What the tests cover
ISO 6425 is broader than a pressure test. The 2018 preview gives an ordered suite of type tests, and says every sample in those tests must pass every test:

- Visibility
- Magnetic resistance
- Temperature cycling
- Salt spray, with the bracelet fitted
- Shock resistance on the watch head
- Water resistance
- Free-fall shock resistance
- Attachment resistance
These procedures are specified simulations, not a promise that a watch is suitable for every real-world dive or condition. The preview also requires every watch in production to undergo the specified water-overpressure resistance test. This production-stage test is separate from the type-test sequence.
Why a water-resistance rating is not the same as conformity
A stated depth rating communicates a manufacturer’s water-resistance claim; it does not, on its own, show that the watch meets all ISO 6425 requirements or that conformity has been documented. When evaluating a particular model, look for an explicit manufacturer statement that it conforms to ISO 6425:2018, as well as the model’s stated depth rating and any activity limitations.

ISO’s introduction leaves the manufacturer to state whether an activity falls within a watch’s field of use and to define warranty conditions and precautions. Read the maker’s instructions for the exact watch. A wristwatch is not a replacement for dive planning, appropriate instruments, training, or safe diving procedures.

As of October 3, 2026, ISO’s catalog identifies ISO 6425:2018 as edition 4, published in October 2018 and reviewed and confirmed on September 27, 2024. The catalog says it remains current and identifies ISO/TC 114/SC 3 as the responsible technical committee. The fourth edition technically revised and replaced ISO 6425:1996. ISO catalog record

How to check a specific watch
- Check the manufacturer’s documentation for an explicit statement of conformity to ISO 6425:2018; do not infer it from appearance or a depth marking.
- Confirm the depth rating and any stated limitations for the activity you intend to do.
- Review how the dive-time indicator is secured and whether its markings are readable in the conditions relevant to you.
- Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions, warranty conditions, and precautions.
