A technical-information PDF hosted by the IWC Collectors Forum lists C853 production as 1958–1963. That is a source-reported chronology, not a date range independently confirmed here against factory records. The same PDF lists the following calibre, C854, as 1963–1978.

IWC describes the calibre 85 family’s winding as bidirectional: rotor motion in either direction contributes to winding. An eccentric disc converts the rotor’s revolutions into an oscillating movement of a rocking bar. Two pawls on that bar alternately engage the winding wheel.

This explains the family’s winding principle, not every technical specification of the C853 variant. The technical-information PDF reports approximately 800 turns for full winding for C853. Treat that as the PDF’s figure; it is hosted by a collector forum, and its compilation date is not established.
What does “timeless” mean in the context of Cal. 853?
The enduring appeal is best understood through the movement’s historical and mechanical character: it belongs to IWC’s early in-house automatic family and uses Pellaton’s distinctive bidirectional pawl system. That context can help explain why a vintage IWC containing the calibre interests collectors, without implying a particular level of accuracy, rarity, market value, or present-day serviceability.

IWC’s official history places the launch of the Ingenieur in 1955 and notes Pellaton’s bidirectional pawl winding system among his inventions. This provides broader historical context, but it does not document every Cal. 853 and watch-reference combination.
What can a Cal. 853 marking tell you about a watch?
The calibre designation identifies a movement, not a complete watch. By itself, “Cal. 853” does not confirm the precise model or reference, whether the dial, hands, and case are original, the movement’s current condition, or when it was last serviced. A seller’s description is not authentication.

For example, a seller has used the description “1960s IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur Ref. 666A Cal. 853”; that is one listing’s wording, not proof that any particular example is genuine or original.
