IWC specifies a 35111 automatic movement, date, 42-hour power reserve and 3 bar water resistance. The two references differ chiefly in dial treatment and whether they come on an alligator strap or steel bracelet. This is a specification-based guide, not a firsthand wear test: no wrist fit, accuracy or handling observations are claimed.
Which IWC Da Vinci Automatic is this?
“Da Vinci Automatic” can mean several distinct watches. This guide concerns the 40 mm three-hand references IW356601 and IW356602, part of IWC’s 2017-era collection. They are not the smaller 36 mm Automatic models, moon-phase versions, or the separate 2018 Da Vinci Automatic Edition “150 Years.” IWC’s model page documents the standard references; its 2017 collection announcement describes the wider family.
The two standard references share a stainless-steel case and the same basic three-hand, date-display specification. Their factory configurations are:
| Reference | Dial and hands | Supplied bracelet or strap | Clasp |
|---|---|---|---|
| IW356601 | Silver-plated dial; gold-plated hour and minute hands and appliqués; blue seconds hand | Black Santoni alligator strap | Stainless-steel pin buckle |
| IW356602 | Slate-coloured dial; rhodium-plated hands and appliqués | Polished stainless-steel bracelet | Butterfly clasp |
These are the configurations IWC lists for the references. On a pre-owned watch, confirm that the reference, dial, and supplied components match the listing and ask whether any strap, bracelet, or clasp has been replaced.

What are the IWC Da Vinci Automatic’s specifications?
IWC lists the following specifications for the standard 40 mm Automatic:
| Specification | IWC-listed detail |
|---|---|
| Case | Stainless steel; 40 mm diameter; 10 mm height |
| Crystal | Convex sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides |
| Movement | Automatic calibre 35111; 28,800 A/h (4 Hz); 25 jewels |
| Power reserve | 42 hours |
| Display and functions | Hours, minutes, central hacking seconds, and date |
| Water resistance | 3 bar |
These figures are IWC’s published specifications, not independent test results. The 3 bar rating is a limited water-resistance specification, not a basis for treating the watch as a swimming or diving watch. For care in wet conditions, follow IWC’s guidance for the specific watch and its current condition; a rating alone does not establish the performance of an older or poorly maintained example.

How does the IWC Da Vinci Automatic wear?
The listed dimensions are a 40 mm diameter and 10 mm height, but those numbers do not establish how the watch will fit an individual wrist. IWC says the collection’s moving horns and curved lugs were designed to help the strap or bracelet follow the wrist’s shape. That is the manufacturer’s design intent, not a measured fit result or a guarantee of comfort on every wrist.
Before buying, try the exact reference if possible. Check how far the case extends across your wrist, whether the lugs sit flat, and how the clasp or buckle feels when fastened. Bracelet fit can also depend on link sizing, while strap condition and flexibility matter on IW356601. No wrist measurements or handling assessment are available here, so comfort, overhang, clasp security, and real-world legibility should be judged on the example you are considering.

What distinguishes the design?
IWC describes the collection’s design through its round case, twin-frame bezel, large Arabic numerals, slim leaf-shaped hands, and circular date display at 6 o’clock. The seam between the bezel’s two frames is another intended visual detail. The date position and two bezel frames give the otherwise simple three-hand layout a recognizable identity.
IWC connects the refreshed design to 1980s Da Vinci styling and describes the 40 mm Automatic as a modern interpretation of the late-1990s Da Vinci SL Automatic reference 3528. The line’s history extends further back: IWC says the Da Vinci was its first wristwatch fitted with Beta 21 quartz in 1969, while the 1985 Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar helped establish the round-case design codes the company cites. Those historical watches are context, not evidence that the standard 40 mm Automatic shares their movement or complications. IWC’s Da Vinci collection history provides its account of that lineage.

How does it differ from other Da Vinci Automatics?
The 36 mm Automatic
The 2017 collection also included 36 mm Automatic references IW458307, IW458308, IW458310, and IW458312. IWC describes those models as smaller and slimmer, with a recessed inner dial circle and rounded crown. They are separate watches, not smaller variants of the IW356601 or IW356602 by another name. The collection also included Automatic Moon Phase 36 models and higher complications, which should likewise be assessed by their own reference and specifications.
The “150 Years” edition
The 2018 Da Vinci Automatic Edition “150 Years” is a materially different model. It has small seconds at 6 and uses IWC-manufactured calibre 82200 with a Pellaton winding system and a 60-hour power reserve. IWC announced 250 red-gold and 500 stainless-steel examples across its listed versions. Those movement, display, reserve, and production details do not apply to the standard IW356601 and IW356602. See IWC’s 2018 anniversary-edition announcement for the separate model.
Is the IWC Da Vinci Automatic a practical daily watch?
Its uncomplicated display, automatic movement, date, and steel case describe a straightforward dress-oriented daily-watch format. Practical suitability still depends on the individual: the 3 bar rating does not establish swimming suitability, and the 42-hour reserve means the watch may stop if left unworn for longer than its reserve. The strap and bracelet versions also involve different preferences and upkeep: the IW356601’s alligator strap and pin buckle are not interchangeable in feel or routine care with the IW356602’s steel bracelet and butterfly clasp.
For a used example, prioritize the exact reference, condition, service history, and originality of the dial, hands, and bracelet or strap. IWC’s published specifications do not provide independent accuracy results, service costs, turnaround times, or current prices. Request dated service documentation and have condition assessed by a qualified watchmaker if those points affect the purchase.
Quick Recap
What should you verify before buying?
- Confirm that the watch is IW356601 or IW356602, rather than a 36 mm, moon-phase, or “150 Years” model.
- Match the dial and hands to the reference configuration, and establish whether the strap, bracelet, and clasp are original or replacements.
- Inspect the case, crystal, crown, date change, and movement operation; request service records where available.
- Try the watch on your wrist to assess fit, and have any needed bracelet sizing or strap replacement confirmed for the exact reference.
- For a pre-owned watch, do not infer current water resistance from the model’s original rating; condition and maintenance matter.
