It is a substantial, specification-rich pilot’s watch; whether it feels comfortable, reads clearly or earns the “tool watch lover’s dream” label on the wrist requires hands-on experience that specifications alone cannot establish.
What the SFTI is—and what it is not
SFTI stands for “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor.” IWC announced the civilian TOP GUN Edition “SFTI” on 15 October 2020 as a limited edition of 1,500 pieces. The watch takes inspiration from an earlier 2018 SFTI chronograph made with instructors based at Naval Air Station Lemoore and, according to IWC, available exclusively to graduates of the Navy Fighter Weapons School. The IW389104 is the later civilian edition, not that graduate-exclusive watch. IWC’s 2020 announcement describes the connection, and the IWC Journal account calls the 2020 model a civilian version.

These are manufacturer specifications from IWC’s past-collections product page, not independently measured performance figures. IWC says the chronograph can time intervals up to 12 hours and that the crystal is secured against displacement caused by a drop in air pressure.
A tactical design built from contrasting materials
IWC specifies black zirconium oxide ceramic for the case, with Ceratanium on the case back and chronograph pushers. The black dial and hands keep the dark palette, while luminous coating, the green textile strap and red hand accents provide contrast. The red small-seconds hand and the tail of the chronograph seconds hand are shaped as jet-inspired details, according to IWC’s launch description.

The result is a deliberately military-coded appearance, but the material choices and proportions tell a more practical story than the color scheme alone: this is a 44.5 mm-wide, 15.7 mm-high chronograph with a textile strap and 6-bar water resistance. Those figures help set expectations for scale and specification; they do not by themselves establish how it wears, how easy it is to read in particular conditions, or how its finishing appears in person.
What the calibre 69380 brings
The automatic calibre 69380 combines a column-wheel chronograph with day and date displays and a hacking small seconds. The chronograph layout measures hours, minutes and seconds, with IWC stating a maximum elapsed-time measurement of 12 hours. Its 46-hour power reserve and 4 Hz operating frequency are the manufacturer’s published figures. A soft-iron inner case is specified for protection against magnetic fields, a feature intended to address a concern relevant to instrument-rich environments without making the watch a substitute for a dedicated instrument.

Edition status and availability
The 1,500-piece limit is the edition count IWC announced in 2020, not an indication of how many watches remain available today. IWC’s product page places the reference in past collections; it does not establish current retail stock or a current price. Any offer for an IW389104 should therefore be checked for exact reference, condition, included box and papers, warranty terms, seller and authenticity rather than assumed to be a current authorized-retailer listing.
