The April 2, 2025 report gives a useful spread of sizes, materials and prices, but these watches are not one like-for-like collection. The right favorite depends on whether you want the movie connection, a precious-metal chronograph or an unusual complication.
What was in IWC’s 2025 Pilot’s Watch lineup?
Lex Stolk’s April 2, 2025 Fratello report described five new models presented at Watches and Wonders 2025. Three are APXGP editions associated with the Apple Original Films movie F1; the other two focus on technical complications rather than the film tie-in.
| Model | Reference | Reported case and defining details | Price reported April 2, 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|

Specifications and euro figures in the table are those reported by Fratello on April 2, 2025; they should not be read as current universal prices or confirmation of present availability. IWC’s regional product page for the IW388116 independently identifies the APXGP watch and lists €7,800 among its regional euro prices.
How do the three APXGP chronographs differ?
The two steel APXGP watches are the closest comparison. The IW388116 is the smaller option at 41 mm, while the IW378009 measures 43 mm. Their reported thicknesses are 14.7 mm and 14.9 mm respectively. Both are stainless steel, but the Fratello report gives the 41 mm model’s strap as black rubber with EasX-Change; it does not specify an equivalent strap detail for the 43 mm model.

The third chronograph, reference IW388309, shifts the proposition from movie branding to precious-metal finish. Its 41 mm 18K 5N gold case, black lacquered dial and ceramic tachymeter bezel set it apart from the steel APXGP pair. At the April 2025 reported price of €29,400, it also sits well above those two steel models.
According to the report, all three APXGP chronographs use IWC-manufactured caliber 69385, offer 100 m water resistance and have a 46-hour power reserve. The display places central hours, minutes and chronograph seconds alongside elapsed hours and minutes at 9 and 12 o’clock, running seconds at 6, and day and date at 3. The black rubber straps on the APXGP watches use IWC’s EasX-Change system, which the report says allows a strap change at the touch of a button.

IWC’s official regional page describes the IW388116 as an APXGP watch designed in connection with F1 THE MOVIE. That confirms the model identity and tie-in, while the detailed specifications above remain attributed to the dated Fratello report.
What makes the two complicated watches different?
Shock Absorber Tourbillon Skeleton XPL: protection and visible mechanics
The IW357701 is built around a flying one-minute tourbillon in caliber 82915 and IWC’s SPRIN-g PROTECT shock absorber, housed in a 44 × 13.1 mm Ceratanium case. Fratello reported that protected tourbillon movements had survived test forces exceeding 10,000 g. That is a test result reported in the article, not an independent test of the watch for this article.

- Men's luxury timepieces with technical advancements and a sporty style
- 3 Hand, Date
- Silver-Tone Stainless Steel
- Mineral Crystal
- 100 Meters Water Resistant and 5 Year Limited Warranty
Stolk described the combination this way: “For the first time, they combined the complicated watch’s patented SPRIN-g PROTECT shock absorbers with a tourbillon.” The defining contrast with the other complicated model is therefore not just its skeletonized presentation, but the focus on shock protection around a delicate regulating mechanism.
Digital Date-Month Perpetual Calendar: calendar information and chronograph
The IW388801 combines a chronograph with a perpetual calendar that shows the date and month on large discs. Fratello describes caliber 89802 as a 474-part movement with a 68-hour power reserve, and notes that the large digital displays draw inspiration from IWC Pallweber pocket watches of the 1880s. Its 43 × 16.5 mm Ceratanium case is wider and thicker than the tourbillon’s case, and its reported April 2025 price is lower, though the watches serve markedly different technical purposes.

Which of the five is the most compelling?
There is no single spec-sheet winner because the lineup mixes straightforward chronographs with two high complications. A practical way to choose is to start with the feature that matters most to you:
- For the APXGP and film connection: compare the steel IW388116 and IW378009 by case diameter; choose the 41 mm or 43 mm model that better suits your wrist and preferred presence.
- For a precious-metal chronograph: the IW388309 pairs a 41 mm gold case with a black dial and ceramic tachymeter bezel.
- For a tourbillon with an explicit shock-protection feature: the IW357701 combines its flying tourbillon with SPRIN-g PROTECT.
- For an unusual calendar display and chronograph in one watch: the IW388801 puts date and month on large discs and adds a perpetual calendar.
The reported euro prices help show the lineup’s breadth, but the figures belong to the April 2, 2025 Fratello report rather than a current, global price list. The available sources do not establish current availability for all five models across every market.
