The announcement also introduced a tourbillon, a redesigned perpetual calendar, two automatic models and new chronograph versions.
What IWC announced at Watches and Wonders 2024
IWC named six Portugieser novelties in its 9 April 2024 release: the Eternal Calendar (IW505701), Hand-Wound Tourbillon Day & Night (IW545901), Perpetual Calendar 44 (IW5037), Automatic 42 (IW5017), Automatic 40 (IW3584) and Chronograph (3716). The company said the range uses IWC-manufactured movements and introduced four signature dial colors: Horizon Blue, Dune, Obsidian and Silver Moon. IWC’s announcement establishes these as the Portugieser novelties it named; it does not establish that they were every IWC release across the entire fair.
Why the Eternal Calendar is the headline
The Portugieser Eternal Calendar is the most technically distinctive release. IWC calls it its first secular perpetual calendar: in addition to tracking month lengths and adding a leap day every four years, its new 400-year gear accounts for Gregorian calendar exceptions by skipping three leap years during each 400-year cycle. That addresses the century years that are not leap years under the Gregorian rule.
IWC also claims that the watch’s Double Moon indication would theoretically need a one-day correction only after 45 million years. This is a manufacturer-stated theoretical interval, not an independently tested performance result. The Watches and Wonders Geneva IWC page repeats the leap-year and moon-phase claims.

Dial colors and presentation
IWC linked Horizon Blue, Dune, Obsidian and Silver Moon to qualities or stages of the day-and-night cycle. It described the dial finish as a 60-step process incorporating 15 layers of transparent lacquer, followed by fine grinding and polishing to achieve a high-gloss surface. These are IWC’s descriptions of its design inspiration and manufacturing process. The official Portugieser collection page also presents the four signature colors.

At the fair, IWC displayed the collection in an open pavilion inspired by modernist architecture and elements of its Schaffhausen Manufakturzentrum. Water features referenced the Rhine, while a large moon hung above the watch display. The brand’s Perpetual Studio let visitors observe watchmakers assembling and fine-tuning complex mechanisms.
