The Jack Mason Strat-o-Timer and Hydrotimer share a compact, 40 mm case design, but they are built for different jobs: the Strat-o-Timer is a traveler GMT, while the Hydrotimer is a dive watch. Jack Mason introduced the Strat-o-Timer in late 2022 as its first GMT, then followed it with the Hydrotimer in 2023. The clearest detailed comparison of the Hydrotimer is from that 2023 launch period; current official specifications are available for the Strat-o-Timer, but current Hydrotimer specifications and availability are not established here.

How the two watches are related

The Strat-o-Timer came first: Fratello dates Jack Mason’s first GMT to 2022, with the Hydrotimer following in 2023 as a diver developed from the Strat-o-Timer’s design foundation. Fratello’s brand history provides that timeline. Their shared footprint and case styling make the relationship visible, while their movements, bezels, and dial layouts distinguish their purposes.

Time+Tide’s May 8, 2023 comparison describes both as having a rounded cushion- or barrel-like case, with polished sides and brushed upper surfaces. It notes rectangular applied markers on the Strat-o-Timer and circular markers on the Hydrotimer; the Strat-o-Timer also has a date and a fourth, GMT hand. These details are launch-era reporting, not confirmation that every later version is unchanged. Read the 2023 comparison.

Strat-o-Timer vs. Hydrotimer specifications

Feature Strat-o-Timer Hydrotimer
Role and timing Traveler GMT; Jack Mason’s first GMT, released in late 2022. Dive watch introduced in 2023.
Movement Miyota 9075 automatic GMT; Jack Mason’s current official page lists a 42-hour power reserve and 28,800 vph. Miyota 9039 automatic; the May 2023 comparison lists a 42-hour reserve and 4 Hz.
Case dimensions Current official page: 40 mm diameter, 47 mm lug-to-lug, 13.2 mm thick. The 2023 comparison reported 13 mm thickness. The May 2023 comparison reported 40 mm diameter, 47 mm lug-to-lug, and 13 mm thickness.
Water resistance 200 m, listed on the current official page and in the 2023 comparison. 300 m in the May 2023 comparison.
Bezel 48-click, bidirectional timing bezel, per the May 2023 comparison. 120-click, unidirectional dive bezel, per the May 2023 comparison.
Dial details Rectangular applied markers, date, and fourth GMT hand, as described in the 2023 comparison. Circular markers, as described in the 2023 comparison.
Bracelet and strap details The 2023 comparison describes a seven-link bracelet. The current official page specifies 20 mm strap compatibility and quick-release attachment. The 2023 comparison lists three-link or seven-link bracelets and a rubber strap; it reports that the steel bracelets interchange between the two models.

The current Strat-o-Timer specifications come from Jack Mason’s official Strat-o-Timer collection page. Hydrotimer details in the table are historical launch-era figures from the 2023 comparison, not verified current specifications. The difference between the Strat-o-Timer’s current listed 13.2 mm thickness and the 2023 comparison’s rounded 13 mm figure may reflect rounding or version differences; the available information does not establish which.

The Strat-o-Timer is a traveler GMT

Its Miyota 9075 is a flyer, or traveler, GMT movement. The local hour hand can be adjusted independently when changing time zones, while the GMT hand continues to indicate reference time. That makes it useful for a wearer who travels and wants to reset local time without losing track of a home or other reference time. Jack Mason’s current official page lists the movement’s 42-hour power reserve and 28,800 vibrations per hour.

The 48-click bidirectional bezel adds elapsed-time tracking, but it is not the Hydrotimer’s dive bezel: it turns in either direction, according to the 2023 comparison. The current official Strat-o-Timer page lists 200 m water resistance. This is distinct from the Hydrotimer’s launch-era 300 m rating.

The Hydrotimer is the dive-watch counterpart

The Hydrotimer’s 2023 comparison lists a Miyota 9039 automatic movement, a unidirectional bezel with 120 clicks, and 300 m water resistance. Its circular dial markers and diver-oriented bezel differentiate it from the Strat-o-Timer’s GMT hand, date, and bidirectional timing bezel. The reported movement reserve is 42 hours, with a 4 Hz frequency.

Those specifications describe the Hydrotimer as presented in 2023. Current official Hydrotimer specifications, pricing, and stock status are not established here, so the launch-era rating and components should not be assumed to describe a current production version or a watch currently for sale.

Case size, bracelet, and strap fit

The original comparison gives both watches the same 40 mm diameter, 47 mm lug-to-lug, and 13 mm thickness, a notably similar case footprint for a GMT and a diver. Jack Mason’s current Strat-o-Timer page gives a more precise 13.2 mm thickness, while retaining the 40 mm diameter and 47 mm lug-to-lug measurement. The brand lists a 20 mm lug width and quick-release strap attachment for the Strat-o-Timer.

For an aftermarket strap, confirm both the 20 mm width and the attachment system against the individual watch and strap listing. The 2023 comparison says the models’ steel bracelets interchange, but that is a historical report; confirm fit with the seller or brand before buying a bracelet for a specific version.

What Jack Mason says about assembly and regulation

Jack Mason says it assembles the Strat-o-Timer in the United States and regulates its watches to within +/-5 seconds per day. These are manufacturer claims listed on the official Strat-o-Timer page, not independently verified test results for a particular watch.

Which one suits you?

  • Choose the Strat-o-Timer if you want a traveler GMT whose local hour hand adjusts independently, plus a date and bidirectional timing bezel.
  • Consider the Hydrotimer if your priority is a dedicated dive-watch configuration with a unidirectional bezel and the 300 m rating reported at launch in 2023. Check current specifications and availability before relying on those details.
  • Compare fit and accessories carefully if you are choosing between bracelets or aftermarket straps: the Strat-o-Timer’s current official listing specifies 20 mm quick-release straps, while Hydrotimer accessory details here come from the 2023 comparison.
