Jacob & Co’s watches pair deliberately extravagant design with ambitious mechanical engineering. In the Twin Turbo Furious, the showpiece is not only its appearance: the 2018 feature by Xavier Markl for Monochrome Watches describes a double high-speed triple-axis tourbillon, a decimal minute repeater and a monopusher chronograph with reference time indication. The exact title, “The Method Behind the Madness,” refers to that watchmaking feature—not to a documentary.
What makes Jacob & Co watches so complicated?
The method is to make the mechanism part of the spectacle. Rather than treating a watch’s complications as details hidden beneath a conventional dial, Jacob & Co often puts motion and display at the center of the design. Markl’s October 10, 2018 Monochrome Watches feature presents the brand’s aesthetic and mechanical ambition as intertwined: the bold look is intentional, and the engineering is meant to support it. The result can be polarising, but visual excess and technical complexity are not separate sides of the brand’s identity.
The Twin Turbo Furious, introduced at Baselworld 2018, concentrates that approach in one watch. Markl describes its combination as a double high-speed triple-axis tourbillon, a decimal minute repeater and a monopusher chronograph with reference time indication. Each element adds mechanical or display complexity; together, they make the watch an example of Jacob & Co’s willingness to depart from conventional watch design.
How the brand’s technical ambition developed
Markl traces the company’s path from a New York jewelry business in the 1980s to watches beginning in 2002, followed by increasingly ambitious mechanical pieces. The milestones in his account show a shift from simply making a watch more elaborate to making its movement and display the visual focus.

Quenttin: a 31-day power reserve
Introduced in 2006 and developed with BNB Concept, the Quenttin is described in the 2018 feature as having a vertical movement, a tourbillon visible from the side of the case and a 31-day power reserve delivered through seven barrels. Those specifications made the watch an early mechanical milestone in Markl’s account of the brand.
Astronomia: motion as the main display
Introduced in 2014, the Astronomia made a moving planetary display the centerpiece of the watch. Markl describes it as combining a triple-axis tourbillon with rotating indications and a spherical Jacob-cut diamond with 288 facets. Keeping the moving components light and balanced was among the engineering challenges described in the feature.
The Astronomia Sky, first presented in 2016, extended that three-dimensional display concept with a sidereal indication. In these models, the movement is not merely a source of timekeeping: its moving parts are also the visual experience.
Twin Turbo Furious: multiple complications in one watch
The Twin Turbo Furious brings several demanding mechanisms together. The 2018 feature’s exact terms are “double high-speed triple axis tourbillon,” “decimal minute repeater” and “mono-pusher chronograph with reference time indication.” The combination makes it a clear example of the brand’s technical showmanship, though complexity alone does not establish how practical or easy a watch is to use day to day.

What “the method behind the madness” means
The phrase captures a design philosophy, not a claim that every complication is necessary for ordinary timekeeping. Jacob & Co’s watches can prioritize visual impact and mechanical ambition alongside conventional usefulness. The moving display of the Astronomia and the concentrated complications of the Twin Turbo Furious show two versions of that approach: one turns motion into a spectacle, while the other combines multiple functions in a single mechanism.
Markl’s article is a historical snapshot published in 2018. It documents the models and specifications discussed above as reported at that time; it does not establish current production status, retail availability, pricing, seller authorization or marketplace stock.
