Ming Thein’s 2011 account of owning a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grande GMT (reference 240.8.18) for more than two years describes a distinctive, satisfying watch with a practical eight-day reserve—but also a second-time display that takes longer to read than a conventional dual-time dial. His experience is useful context for evaluating the design, not a current condition report or a fresh test of watches now for sale.
What the Reverso Grande GMT is—and what the review covers
The Grande GMT pairs the Reverso’s reversible case with a manually wound dual-time display. The model is documented as reference 240.8.18 in auction records, including Sotheby’s listing and Heritage Auctions’ listing. Confirm the reference, movement, configuration, and provenance for the particular watch you are considering; auction records describe individual lots, not every example.
The review at Ming Thein’s site is dated September 11, 2011. The author said he bought his steel example in early 2009 and remained satisfied after more than two years. The observations below are his account of that watch and his habits, not controlled testing or an assessment of current pre-owned examples.
How its dual-time display works
The owner described a shaped, in-house Calibre 878 with 276 parts and an eight-day running time. The front presents a classical silver dial; turning the case over reveals a black dial with luminous details and the second-time display. The watch also has plus/minus pushers for adjusting that zone, a GMT offset display, day/night indications, small seconds, a large date, and a power-reserve indicator, according to the 2011 review.

That arrangement gives the watch two visually distinct sides rather than putting both zones together on one dial. The author liked the contrast and the character of the two faces, but found that reading the second zone required turning the watch over. For a quick glance at both times, he said a single face with a second hour hand would be easier to scan. The choice is therefore about more than appearance: it favors the reversible case experience over simultaneous legibility.
What worked well over more than two years
Long reserve and a useful second zone
The author valued the eight-day reserve and found the second timezone useful. A long interval between windings can suit someone who rotates watches or prefers not to wind daily, though the reverse-side reserve indicator was awkward for his winding routine: he had to turn the watch over to check it.

Two distinct watch personalities
He enjoyed the contrast between the silver front and black reverse, describing the watch as satisfying to own. He also used different attachments for different settings: the bracelet for formal wear, cordovan for daily use, and grooved rubber when he wanted a sportier feel. These are personal preferences, not evidence that any currently available strap will fit a given example.
Testing and finishing context
The reviewer praised Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 1000-hour test, while still criticizing the placement of the reserve display for practical winding. The test is mentioned here as part of his assessment; the review does not provide independent test data for this specific watch.

Trade-offs to consider before choosing one
Second-zone legibility
If you need to compare two time zones constantly and instantly, the need to turn the case may be inconvenient. The GMT is more compelling if the second face’s presentation and reversible-case design matter as much as speed of reading.
Half-hour and quarter-hour offsets
The owner found the hour-based adjustment scheme unsuitable for a 5-hour-45-minute offset such as Nepal’s. That is a limitation he encountered, not a comprehensive compatibility test for every time-zone use case. Check the adjustment increments against the locations you actually need to track.

Day/night indicators
The author personally had little use for the day/night displays. Whether they help depends on how often you use the second zone and whether knowing its day or night status adds value for you.
Visible wear on steel
The owner reported that his steel case and bracelet scratched readily. Separately, Heritage’s record for its particular 240.8.18 example notes light scratches on the case and case bed, and says the auction house does not guarantee timekeeping accuracy. Neither observation establishes the condition of every watch. Treat wear as a condition-specific matter, especially when buying used.

What to check on an individual pre-owned example
A model’s appeal cannot substitute for checking the actual watch. Auction records illustrate why condition and completeness should be assessed lot by lot: Sotheby’s record and Heritage’s record concern separate examples with their own listing details.
- Identity: Verify the reference and configuration against the watch and its documentation; do not rely on a broad model name alone.
- Condition: Inspect the case, reversible case bed, bracelet or strap, and visible wear. Assess the specific watch rather than assuming scratches are inevitable or absent.
- Function: Confirm the movement, winding, timekeeping, date, second-time adjustment, and reserve display operate as expected. Heritage recommends service for daily use and timekeeping accuracy for its own auction example; that is an auction-house note, not a universal manufacturer service instruction.
- Records and sale terms: Review service history, provenance, included box and papers, seller protection, return terms, and any auction-specific conditions.
- Attachment fit: The 2011 owner’s bracelet, cordovan, and grooved-rubber experiences do not establish strap dimensions or compatibility. Verify attachment geometry, dimensions, and clasp compatibility before buying an alternative.
Dimensions, history, and what not to infer
Sotheby’s states dimensions of 29 × 39 mm for its specific circa-2007 auction lot. Those are listing-specific measurements, not an authoritative specification for every production variant. The sources cited here do not establish current pricing, stock, service fees or turnaround, or compatibility with currently sold straps.
Jaeger-LeCoultre dates the Reverso concept to a challenge in 1930 to protect a polo player’s watch glass with a case that could turn over; the company says the patent application was filed on March 4, 1931. Its Reverso history describes the reverse as a surface for personalization or, in Duoface models, a second-time-zone face. The brand’s 2025 Reverso Tribute Geographic shows continued interest in travel complications, but it is a different model with a different movement and world-time display; its specifications should not be attributed to the Grande GMT.
