Three watches featured by Fratello Watches in 2021 show why Japanese domestic-market (JDM) releases attract collectors: Casio’s Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF pairs solar radio timekeeping with a restrained titanium design; Citizen’s AQ4020-54Y combines Eco-Drive accuracy with a Washi-paper dial; and Seiko’s Presage SARX061 uses an Arita-style porcelain dial. They are distinctive examples, not proof that all three models were exclusive to Japan—the Seiko, in particular, also appeared in Germany under another reference.

What makes these watches worth knowing?

“Japan’s worst-kept secrets” is a playful label for Japanese watches that can be less familiar outside their home market. Thomas Stover’s July 14, 2021 Fratello Watches feature highlighted three models for different reasons: advanced solar timekeeping from Casio, high-accuracy Eco-Drive from Citizen, and traditional porcelain dial work in a Seiko Presage.

The comparison is useful because these are not three versions of the same idea. The Casio emphasizes convenience and everyday versatility, the Citizen makes its unusual dial material part of a precision quartz watch, and the Seiko offers an automatic movement and a distinctive ceramic dial.

How the three models compare

Model Movement and timekeeping Dial and case Water resistance Market note
Casio Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF Solar quartz with radio time reception and perpetual calendar, as described by Fratello Watches in 2021 41.5 mm titanium case and bracelet; black dial with blue accents, as described by Fratello Watches in 2021 10 bar, as reported by Fratello Watches in 2021 Presented as a Japanese-market model in the feature; current availability not established
Citizen The Citizen AQ4020-54Y Eco-Drive A060 solar quartz; Citizen’s ±5 seconds-per-year accuracy specification was reported by Fratello Watches, with no year stated for the manufacturer specification 37.5 mm titanium case and white Washi-paper dial, as described by Fratello Watches in 2021 10 bar, as reported by Fratello Watches in 2021 Presented as a Japanese-market model in the feature; current availability not established
Seiko Presage SARX061 / SPB091J1 Automatic 6R35, as described by Fratello Watches in 2021 40.5 mm case and Arita-style porcelain dial, as described by Fratello Watches in 2021 10 bar, also described as 100 meters, as reported by Fratello Watches in 2021 Fratello’s correction notes distribution in at least Germany under reference SPB091J1

These are specifications reported in the 2021 feature, not independent measurements or confirmation of current manufacturer listings. The article’s model descriptions and correction appear in Thomas Stover’s Fratello Watches feature.

Casio Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF: a practical solar radio watch

Fratello describes the OCW-S100-1AJF as a titanium, solar-powered quartz watch with radio time reception, a perpetual calendar, sapphire crystal and 10-bar water resistance. The 41.5 mm case and matching integrated bracelet give it a clean, contemporary look; the black dial and blue accents keep the design from feeling entirely plain.

Its appeal is functional as much as aesthetic. Solar charging reduces routine battery changes, while radio reception is intended to keep the displayed time aligned with a broadcast time signal where reception is available. The perpetual calendar is another convenience, though radio reception and charging performance depend on conditions and use.

The integrated bracelet is a meaningful ownership consideration: the feature says it is not designed to be swapped for a strap. Stover characterizes the watch as a restrained daily-wear or “GADA” option; that is an editorial description, not a formal watch category or certification.

Citizen The Citizen AQ4020-54Y: Washi paper and high-accuracy quartz

The AQ4020-54Y stands out for its white Washi-paper dial. Fratello describes light passing through the paper to power the solar cell, tying the dial material to the Eco-Drive system rather than treating it as decoration alone. The watch is described as having a 37.5 mm titanium case, a perpetual calendar and 10-bar water resistance.

The feature reports the A060 movement’s accuracy as ±5 seconds per year, attributing that figure to Citizen Watch. The feature does not state when Citizen issued the specification, and it is not an independent test result. For someone choosing between a quartz watch and an automatic, the stated annual accuracy is the model’s clearest technical differentiator, while the paper dial gives it a distinct visual identity.

Seiko Presage SARX061: Arita-style porcelain, with a market caveat

The SARX061 pairs an Arita-style porcelain dial with Seiko’s automatic 6R35 movement. Fratello describes a 40.5 mm case, sapphire crystal and 10-bar water resistance, also expressed as 100 meters. The dial material is the defining feature: it gives the watch a craft-oriented character that differs from the technical emphasis of the Casio and Citizen.

Do not treat the SARX061 as strictly Japan-exclusive. Stover’s feature later corrected its original JDM framing, noting that the watch had distribution in at least Germany under the international reference SPB091J1. That correction establishes a documented exception, not broad worldwide availability.

What did they cost in 2021, and what should buyers check now?

Fratello reported the following gray-market ranges in July 2021, before taxes and shipping. These are historical figures, not current prices or a guide to present-day value.

Model Reported gray-market price Source and qualification
Casio Oceanus OCW-S100-1AJF $470–$530 Fratello Watches, 2021; before taxes and shipping
Citizen The Citizen AQ4020-54Y $2,500–$2,800 Fratello Watches, 2021; before taxes and shipping
Seiko Presage SARX061 $1,500–$1,700 Fratello Watches, 2021; before taxes and shipping

Current stock, market distribution, prices and seller terms are not established by that feature. When considering a listing, confirm the exact reference, condition and seller identity, then check the written warranty, return period, shipping charge and import costs. A low listing price can be misleading if it excludes taxes or leaves service and returns unclear.

Fratello’s 2021 feature also notes that JDM models may be harder to source through ordinary outlets and that some sellers handle warranty returns by forwarding a watch to its manufacturer. Treat that as a general description from 2021, not confirmation of any seller’s present warranty or service process. Ask who pays shipping, where the watch will be sent and what remedy is available before buying.

Which one is the best fit?

  • Choose the Casio if solar charging, radio time reception and a compact set of practical complications matter more than the option to change bracelets.
  • Choose the Citizen if the Washi dial and the reported high-accuracy Eco-Drive specification are the main attractions.
  • Choose the Seiko if you prefer an automatic movement and the character of an Arita-style porcelain dial, while remembering that its Japan-only label needs qualification.
