The JBL Live Beam 3’s touchscreen case is a practical control panel, not just a novelty: it lets you adjust playback, volume, listening modes and EQ without opening the JBL Headphones app on your connected device. It is most useful if you switch between a phone, tablet or computer and often change settings; if you rarely adjust your earbuds, the screen may matter less.
The case does not make the app unnecessary: the app remains useful for firmware updates and some customization. The screen is best understood as a convenient shortcut for everyday controls, rather than a replacement for setup and advanced features.

What can the JBL Live Beam 3 case do?
JBL’s case has a 1.45-inch touchscreen. Its controls include playback, volume, listening modes and EQ, while its screens also provide status and convenience features. SoundGuys reports access to ANC modes, spatial sound, EQ presets, Find My earbuds, battery information, notification previews and a timer. JBL also describes music and call controls and customizable screensaver photos.
The practical advantage is that controls are on the case rather than buried in an app on whichever device is playing audio. Stuff’s reviewer found this useful when switching between a phone and tablet, including when the connected device did not have the companion app installed. That makes the case particularly appealing for people who regularly move between devices or adjust sound settings during listening.

- JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
- Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
- Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
- Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
- Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
There are limits. The case screen does not replace the app for firmware updates and certain customization features, according to SoundGuys. And if you keep the case in a bag, reaching for it may be no easier than reaching for your phone.
How useful is the touchscreen in everyday use?
The case is most valuable when you want a quick change without interrupting what you are doing on another screen. You can use it to adjust volume or listening modes while connected to a laptop or tablet, or to change EQ without first finding the right app on the active device.
Stuff reviewer Tom Morgan-Freelander summed up the appeal for frequent device-switchers: “Do you regularly swap between gadgets, and tweak sound settings more often than Rick Rubin? Then you’ll love the JBL Live 3 series.” That is a reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every owner will use the screen often.
The display is less compelling for listeners who use one source device and rarely touch playback or sound settings. In that routine, it adds hardware without necessarily changing how the earbuds are used. The case is therefore a genuine convenience feature, but its value depends on your habits.

- Secure fit with TwistLock design: You might even forget you're wearing them. JBL OvalTubes with TwistLock stay in your ears all day without discomfort. The liquid silicone ear hook with memory wire is comfortable and adaptable to different sizes.
- JBL Pure Bass with Spatial Sound: Enjoy rich, clear JBL Pure Bass sound from our 10mm dynamic driver, delivering powerful stereo sound with deep bass for an immersive audio experience. Customize your sound to the way you are with Personi-fi 3.0. Take a quick earing test and adapt your audio to your personal features.
- 6 mics for perfect calls: Three mics per ear effectively capture your voice while suppressing noise from other sources. Meanwhile, the beamforming algorithm minimizes unwanted ambient noise, making your authentic voice more intelligible. The windproof design significantly reduces distortion from air friction and gives you a crystal-clear call experience—even in the middle of an outdoor run on a breezy day.
Do you still need the JBL app?
Yes, if you want to make full use of the earbuds and case. The touchscreen handles many routine adjustments, but SoundGuys says the app remains useful for firmware updates and certain customization features. The display reduces dependence on the app for everyday control; it does not eliminate it.
Sound, noise cancelling and battery life
JBL lists 10mm dynamic drivers, True Adaptive Noise Cancelling, six microphones, multipoint, spatial audio and an IP55 rating among the Live Beam 3’s features. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measures of how the earbuds perform.
Independent reviews describe an energetic, bass-forward sound. SoundGuys characterizes the tuning as consumer-friendly, with strong bass and emphasized highs, and says the ANC is effective but not the best it has measured. Stuff reports that ANC handled low-frequency rumbles in its listening environments, while voices and keyboard noise could remain audible. Your experience will depend on fit, surroundings and listening preferences.
Battery figures vary with ANC settings and testing conditions. JBL/HARMAN’s 2024 spec sheet gives up to 12 hours with ANC off, 10 hours with ANC on and 9 hours with True Adaptive ANC on. JBL’s product page states up to 48 hours total, including case charges, with ANC off. In a standardized test at 75 dB, SoundGuys measured 8 hours and 14 minutes; that test result is not directly comparable to JBL’s maximum claim because the conditions differ.

Charging and portability
The case supports Qi wireless charging, so a Qi-compatible charging pad is a relevant optional accessory if you already use one. JBL/HARMAN’s spec sheet says a 10-minute USB-C charge provides up to four hours of playback. Actual battery life depends on the ANC mode and other listening conditions, so treat maximum figures as manufacturer claims rather than guaranteed everyday results.
The screen’s convenience comes with a trade-off: the case is a more feature-focused piece of hardware than a basic charging case. Consider whether you are comfortable carrying it and expect to use its controls before making the screen a deciding factor.
Who should consider the JBL Live Beam 3?
The Live Beam 3 is a stronger fit if you:
- Switch between devices and want controls on the case.
- Often adjust volume, listening modes or EQ while listening.
- Want a screen that can handle routine controls without opening the app on the connected device.
It may be less compelling if you:
- Use one device and rarely change earbud settings.
- Expect the case screen to replace the JBL Headphones app for updates and advanced customization.
- Prefer the simplest, smallest possible charging case.
Verdict
The JBL Live Beam 3 touchscreen case is useful when it fits your routine: it puts playback, volume, listening modes and EQ within reach even when your phone is not the active source. For multi-device listeners and people who frequently adjust sound settings, that is a real convenience rather than a gimmick.
It is not a substitute for the companion app, and it adds less value if you rarely change settings or do not want to reach for the case. The buying decision comes down to whether you will use a control screen on the case often enough to appreciate having it.
