Seiko introduced the King Seiko SJE089 and SJE091 in 2023 as non-limited, KSK-inspired automatic watches in two dial colors. Both measure 38.6 mm across and 10.7 mm thick, and Seiko says they are 0.2 mm thinner than the original 1965 King Seiko KSK—even with automatic winding and a date window. The SJE089 has a silver sunray dial; the SJE091 has a specially developed black shade.
What distinguishes the SJE089 from the SJE091?
The two references share their movement, case dimensions and published core specifications. The visible difference is the dial:
- SJE089: silver dial with a new sunray finish.
- SJE091: black dial in a specially developed shade.
Seiko announced both on May 30, 2023, as non-limited additions to the King Seiko collection. Its release described their design as inspired by the original 1965 KSK. Seiko’s May 30, 2023 announcement said they would be available from July 2023 at Seiko boutiques and selected retailers worldwide. That launch announcement does not confirm present-day stock at any particular retailer.

These figures are from Seiko’s 2023 launch specifications. The US SJE089 product page also lists a date display, stop-seconds, accuracy of +15 to −10 seconds per day, a 45.8 mm lug-to-lug measurement, 19 mm lug spacing and a weight of 130 g. Those additional figures are specific to the surfaced US SJE089 listing; they should not be assumed for the SJE091 without its matching product page. Seiko’s US SJE089 product page

How slim are the SJE089 and SJE091?
At 10.7 mm thick, these watches sit near the 10–10.5 mm range some shoppers seek, but they are not 10.5 mm or thinner. Seiko’s specific comparison is that each is 0.2 mm thinner than the original 1965 KSK. The company attributes the slimmer profile to the case construction and a lower box-shaped crystal profile, despite the addition of automatic winding and a date window.
That is a comparison with the original KSK, not a claim that the SJE089 and SJE091 are thinner than every earlier King Seiko model. Seiko separately said they are slimmer than previous limited-edition King Seiko watches that also used the 6L35 movement, but that statement does not establish a universal comparison across the full King Seiko range.

Design and wearing context
The 38.6 mm diameter and 10.7 mm thickness give the pair a relatively compact, dress-oriented profile on paper. Both have a stainless-steel case and bracelet, a box-shaped sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on its inner surface, and a screw case back. Their published 5-bar water resistance and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance are useful specification checks, but the launch information does not present these as sports or dive watches.
The choice between them is therefore primarily a dial decision: the SJE089’s silver sunray finish offers a brighter look, while the SJE091’s developed black shade is the darker alternative. Their shared dimensions and movement mean there is no listed technical distinction between the two in Seiko’s launch specifications.
