Chefs rely on timing to keep dishes and orders on track, but a wristwatch can also be a personal keepsake, a travel companion or simply part of someone’s style. A July 31, 2022 feature by D.C. Hannay for Time+Tide Watches profiled six celebrated chefs and the watches associated with them. The details below reflect that dated feature—not confirmed current collections or a guide to what is permitted in a professional kitchen.
Why chefs and watches make a natural pairing
Cooking often turns on timing, whether it is a boiled egg or a multi-part dessert. That makes a watch an intuitive image for kitchen work, but the chefs in Hannay’s feature illustrate several different connections: collecting, family history, a meaningful gift, legibility and travel. The article offers examples of personal watch associations; it does not establish that cooks need to wear a wristwatch while preparing food.
Six chefs and the watches linked to them
Eric Ripert: a collection spanning Vacheron Constantin
Hannay describes Le Bernardin chef Eric Ripert as particularly devoted to Vacheron Constantin. The feature names an Overseas, a platinum Patrimony, a Royal Eagle, a limited-edition Historiques American 1921 and a Malte Chronograph among the watches associated with him. It also mentions Patek Philippe, Cartier and Rolex. These are the 2022 article’s reported collection details, not a current inventory verified independently.
Alton Brown: a rotating collection and a family story
The feature portrays television host and food personality Alton Brown as a collector with a rotating selection. Watches it mentions include a GMT-Master, a Casio Worldtimer, a Rolex Oysterdate and an IWC Portugieser. It also says he auctioned an Omega Dark Side of the Moon for COVID relief.

One story stands apart from the list: Hannay recounts that Brown found his father’s Omega Seamaster Chronostop on eBay, two decades after it had been stolen. That is the account given in the feature; it is not independently confirmed here. The Casio Worldtimer also provides a less rarefied point of contrast with the luxury names in the article: Hannay calls it cheap by comparison, but gives no price.
Candace Nelson: an anniversary Cartier
Pastry chef and entrepreneur Candace Nelson’s signature watch, according to the feature, is a Cartier Tank Française given to her by her husband for an anniversary. The connection is as much about the gift’s personal meaning as the watch itself.

Masaharu Morimoto: a legible Panerai Luminor
Hannay identifies a Panerai Luminor as a frequent companion for chef Masaharu Morimoto and describes it as large, legible and time-only. The profile also mentions sightings of Rolex, Franck Muller and Grand Seiko watches. Those descriptions and sightings belong to the 2022 feature; they should not be read as a current or complete account of Morimoto’s watches.
Gordon Ramsay: two watches on different straps
The article points to Gordon Ramsay wearing a vintage Rolex Submariner reference 1680 on an aftermarket leather NATO strap during an appearance on Hot Ones, and an IWC Mark XI on a fabric NATO strap in another appearance. Hannay suggests the Mark XI’s association with Royal Air Force pilots may explain Ramsay’s interest. That is the author’s inference, not a reason Ramsay is quoted as giving.

- 【No Battery Required & Easy to Use】 The mechanical kitchen timer doesn’t require any batteries, it is energy saving and eco-friendly. Just wind it up and set time, it will work. It is small and compact, you can carry it with you anywhere.
- 【Mechanical Timer Working Principle】 Visual mechanical timer is powered by a mechanical movement with spring, just like an old spring toy, you need to wind up first to make it work. So when you hold this timer, you must turn to 55 every time to activate the spring and then turn back to the time you want to set.
- 【Why Not Ring?】If the timer you received doesnot ring, that’s because this is a mechanical timer, you didn’t wind up firstly. Please follow the two important steps, it will ring: Step 1: "Wind Up". You MUST wind the timer from 0,5,10, 15... to 55 ; Step 2: "Set Time". Wind the timer from 55 back to the time you want to set.
- 【Wide Application】This 60 minute wind up timer can be applied on different occasions. Such as you use at home, in the kitchen, at school, in the classroom, and at work. It will be a nice kitchen timer, classroom timer, work timer and study timer.
- 【Notice】There is no back cover for this timer, so the alarm sound is very loud. If for any reason, you are not satisfied with it, please contact us via Amazon, we will solve the problem.
Curtis Stone: a travel-associated GMT-Master II
The feature names a Franck Muller Black Casa for chef Curtis Stone and says a Rolex GMT-Master II is the watch most often accompanying his travel. Hannay describes that GMT-Master II as an all-black, discontinued variant. Because that status is reported in a 2022 article and has not been independently checked for this account, it should not be treated as confirmation of present-day availability or discontinuation status.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the six profiles show—and what they do not
Together, the profiles offer distinct reasons a watch might matter to its wearer: a broad collection for Ripert, a remembered family watch for Brown, an anniversary gift for Nelson, a legible everyday companion for Morimoto, military heritage as a possible point of interest for Ramsay, and travel for Stone. These are descriptive associations drawn from Hannay’s July 2022 feature, not a product test or a ranking of the watches.

The article does not provide prices, exact references for every named watch, or independently verified current ownership. It also does not investigate food-safety rules or workplace policies. A chef’s watch choices are therefore best read as personal style and collecting stories, not as evidence that wearing a wristwatch is suitable in every kitchen.
