The best laundry room ideas start with how you use the space: plan around the washer, dryer, plumbing, venting and electrical, then add storage and work surfaces that fit your routine. Whether you have a dedicated room, a narrow closet or a laundry area shared with a mudroom, small choices—from shelves above the machines to a foldaway drying rack—can make it more useful and more personal.
Plan the layout before choosing finishes
Start by measuring the room and appliances, including the clearance needed to open doors and reach connections. Note where water, drainage, electrical service and dryer venting are available. If you are creating a laundry area from scratch, interior designer Nadia Watts advises: “If you are starting from scratch, consider building storage and counters that coincide with your washer and dryer placement.” Architectural Digest published this advice in a guide dated December 5, 2025.

Then trace the work: where dirty clothes arrive, where you sort them, whether you fold in the room, and where clean laundry goes. That sequence helps determine where hampers, a counter, hanging space and supplies belong. These are planning considerations, not a substitute for checking appliance instructions or local installation requirements.

1. Stack machines in a narrow footprint
A stacked washer and dryer can free floor space in a compact room or closet. Confirm that the machines are designed for stacking, that the arrangement fits the space, and that connections and access remain practical.

2. Keep side-by-side machines when width allows
Side-by-side machines leave a continuous surface above them for folding or sorting. Measure the appliances and the usable counter depth before committing to this arrangement.
3. Use an L-shaped arrangement
If the room has a usable corner, an L-shaped layout can place machines and a work surface along adjoining walls. Add shelving where it does not block appliance access or circulation.
4. Convert a closet into a laundry zone
A nearby closet may bring laundry closer to bedrooms, but only if water, drainage, electrical service, venting and appliance clearances can be accommodated. Consider how doors open and whether the machines can be reached for maintenance.

5. Make a combined laundry-mudroom
Place machines along one side and use the other for cubbies, hooks or cabinets. Keep a clear path through the room so shoes, bags and laundry do not obstruct appliance doors.
6. Choose doors that suit the footprint
Where a hinged door would crowd a narrow passage, consider whether a sliding or folding door suits the opening and allows adequate access. Check that the chosen doors will not interfere with machine operation or ventilation needs.
Make storage fit the way you do laundry
Open shelves keep frequently used supplies visible and reachable; cabinets and pull-outs hide visual clutter. Measure the intended storage area and follow the mounting instructions for any wall fixture. Shelves above appliances can be useful, but leave room for machine access and any clearances specified by the appliance maker.
7. Add wall-mounted shelves
Use wall space for detergent, stain-treatment supplies and folded cloths. Group small items in baskets so they are easy to find and less likely to spill.

A shelf can keep everyday products close without taking up floor space. Measure its depth and height against the machines and any overhead clearance requirements.
9. Build storage into an underused corner
Corner shelves or a compact cabinet can make an L-shaped room more useful. Keep frequently handled items within comfortable reach rather than placing them behind appliances or above a difficult-to-access area.
10. Use closed cabinets for supplies
Cabinets conceal bottles and packaging for a calmer look. Choose a location that keeps products accessible while avoiding interference with appliance controls, service access or ventilation.

11. Add pull-out cloth bins
Pull-out bins can make sorting or collecting laundry convenient while keeping the floor clear. Select a size that fits the cabinet and the volume of laundry you actually handle.

Separate hampers can make it easier to sort clothes before wash day. Place them where people naturally drop laundry, but do not let them block the route to the machines.
13. Use labeled baskets for sorting
Baskets can separate colors, towels or other loads according to your household’s routine. Labels help everyone use the same system.
14. Put everyday items within reach
Keep the detergent and stain-treatment products you use most often near the machines. Store less-used items elsewhere so the work area stays open.
15. Use a wall rack for hangers
A small rack gives you a place to hang clothes as they come out of the dryer or after ironing. Position it where garments will not obstruct a doorway or a walkway.

Choose features based on what you actually do in the room. A folding counter helps if you fold there; a sink can support soaking or spot treatment; and a drying rail or foldaway board is useful only if you have room to use it safely. As designer Janelle Blakely puts it, “Utilize every inch with a built-in vertical drying rack and foldaway ironing board.” The quote appears in Architectural Digest’s laundry-room guide.
16. Add a counter above side-by-side machines
A counter creates a continuous surface for folding and sorting. Check the appliance arrangement and access requirements before building or installing one.
17. Create a separate folding station
If a counter above the machines will not work, use a nearby table or narrow worktop. Place it where folded laundry can move easily to the next room.
18. Install a utility sink when you will use it
A sink can help with soaking and spot treatment. Its location depends on plumbing and the room’s available space, so plan it before finalizing cabinets or counters.
19. Add a drying rail
A wall-mounted rail provides hanging space for garments that should not go into the dryer. Allow enough room for clothes to hang without blocking circulation, and account for moisture in the room.

20. Choose a foldaway drying rack
A rack that folds away can supply drying space when needed without permanently occupying the floor. Check that the wall or mounting surface is suitable and follow the fixture’s installation instructions.
21. Make ironing compact
A foldaway ironing board can be useful when you iron often but cannot spare a permanent board. Check that it can open fully without blocking doors or access to the machines.
22. Put a small tray on the counter
A tray corrals stain sticks, clips or other small items and can be moved when you need the whole work surface.
Make a small laundry room feel brighter and less crowded
In a tight room, prioritize clear floor area, vertical storage and useful lighting. Keep the palette and decor intentional rather than filling every open surface. For a small-space layout and brightening inspiration, see Architectural Digest’s design guidance and The Trend Spotter’s laundry-room ideas.
23. Use vertical storage
Wall shelves and racks use space above the floor. Measure before buying or building, and make sure storage does not prevent safe access to appliances.
24. Keep the floor as open as possible
Choose wall-mounted or built-in storage where it suits the room, and avoid adding furniture that narrows the route through the space.
25. Choose a light wall color
A pale paint color can help a small room feel open. Pair it with finishes that are appropriate for the room’s conditions and easy to maintain.
26. Improve task lighting
Make sure the counter, sink and machine controls are easy to see. Lighting should be suitable for its location, particularly around water.
27. Use mirrors thoughtfully
A mirror can reflect light and make a small room feel more open. Place it where it will not be splashed or obstructed by hanging laundry.
28. Keep the color palette simple
One main color with a restrained accent can add character without making a compact room feel busy.

29. Use patterned flooring as the focal point
Tile or another suitable floor finish can bring visual interest to a hardworking room. Choose materials for the actual conditions and follow appropriate installation guidance.
30. Add a washable rug only if it fits safely
A rug can soften the space, but it should not slide, trip anyone or interfere with doors and appliance access. Keep it away from areas where it could remain wet.

Color, wallpaper, tile, plants and artwork can make laundry feel less like a purely utilitarian task. Kristine Renee, cofounder of Design Alchemy, told Architectural Digest: “Laundry rooms don’t need to look sterile and simply utilitarian anymore.” Let one or two elements carry the room’s style, while keeping work surfaces and pathways usable.
31. Paint the cabinets a saturated color
Colorful cabinetry adds personality without taking up extra space. Pick a finish suited to the room and the frequency with which the cabinets are handled.
32. Use wallpaper on a limited wall
A patterned accent wall can create a focal point. Consider the room’s moisture exposure and choose a finish appropriate to the location.

Matching or deliberately mixed pulls can make existing cabinetry feel more considered. Choose hardware that is comfortable to grip and suited to the cabinets.
34. Try a contrasting backsplash
A backsplash can bring color or texture to the area around a sink or counter. Match the material and installation to the surface and its exposure to water.
35. Add framed artwork
Artwork is an easy way to bring character to a blank wall. Keep it out of splash zones and away from areas where it could be bumped by a door or hanging clothes.
36. Display a small plant
A plant can soften shelves or a counter if the room has suitable light and the plant will not obstruct work. Avoid placing water containers where spills could reach electrical equipment.

38. Coordinate baskets and bins
Matching baskets make open storage look orderly, while different colors or labels can help distinguish sorting categories.
Design a laundry area that shares space with another function
Combined rooms need a clear division between tasks. Keep the route to machines and storage unobstructed, and plan carefully where water, drying garments and electronics share a room. A laundry zone may also serve as a mudroom, bathroom, study, pantry or craft area, but the appropriate layout depends on the room and its utilities.
39. Pair laundry with a mudroom
Use hooks, cubbies or cabinets for coats and shoes, while keeping laundry supplies close to the machines. Leave enough space for people to enter and move through the room.
40. Add a laundry zone to a bathroom
Keep the machines, storage and work surface arranged so bathroom circulation remains clear. Account for water exposure and appliance requirements before selecting finishes or placing electronics.
41. Combine laundry and a study
Separate the desk from the damp or active laundry area where possible. Keep electronics away from water and ensure hanging clothes do not crowd the work area.
42. Share space with a pantry
Use distinct storage for laundry products and household food supplies. Keep both accessible without letting one task spill into the other’s working area.
43. Create a laundry-craft room
A flexible counter can support folding and craft tasks, but plan where supplies will go when the surface changes use. Keep small materials away from appliance controls and laundry products.
Choose the ideas that fit your home
Use this checklist to turn inspiration into a practical plan:
- Measure: record the room, machines, door swings, counter depth and intended storage locations.
- Check utilities: confirm that plumbing, drainage, electrical service and dryer venting suit the proposed arrangement.
- Map the routine: decide where laundry is dropped, sorted, treated, dried, folded and put away.
- Prioritize features: choose only the sink, counter, hampers, drying rail or ironing board that supports your habits.
- Plan storage: decide what should stay visible and what should be concealed, then measure shelves, cabinets and pull-outs.
- Choose finishes for the room: account for moisture, cleaning and the specific location of each material.
- Verify before installation: follow appliance and fixture instructions and check applicable local requirements; the design inspiration cited here is not a building-code or installation guide.
