If you want a dive watch with a traceable past but would rather look beyond the most familiar luxury names, start with Squale and Zodiac. Both connect current collections to documented histories; DOXA is another worthwhile name, though the available brand material here is less specific about individual current SUB models. “Lesser-known” is relative to mainstream visibility, not a market ranking.
How to assess heritage in a dive watch
A vintage-inspired design is not automatically a direct reissue or continuation. Look for a clear link between the present collection and the brand’s own earlier watches, and distinguish a company’s historical account from independently verified history. The figures below come from brand sources; they are not independent performance tests or market statistics.
- Heritage connection: Does the brand identify a specific historical model or explain how its present collection draws on its past?
- Intended use: A skin diver, everyday watch and deep-diving model serve different purposes. A stated water-resistance figure alone does not guarantee suitability for every dive.
- Fit and ownership: Check dimensions, movement, strap or bracelet fit, warranty, service access and parts support for the exact reference. The cited material establishes only selected dimensions, and pricing and availability vary by market.
Squale: the clearest documented heritage connection
Squale’s official Heritage page says, “The watches in the Heritage range have their origins in Squale’s past,” and names the SUB-39 and Super Squale collections. Squale’s Heritage collection is therefore a direct place to begin if you want a current watch explicitly linked by its maker to earlier designs.
Squale dates registration of its trademark to 10 July 1959. The brand’s history says the earlier Von Büren factory made dive-watch cases for other brands. It also recounts that freediver Enzo Maiorca set a 67-metre diving record in 1965 while wearing a Squale Master; that account and figure are Squale’s, not independent verification. Squale’s official history provides the brand’s account.

Squale 2001 Heritage: a specific story, with an important attribution
Squale announced the 2001 Heritage in 2024 as a 300-piece limited edition. The brand says it was inspired by a Squale 2001 that Jacques-Yves Cousteau gave to Calypso first officer Michel Laval during a 1972 Antarctic expedition. This is Squale’s account of the watch’s provenance; it should be read as a brand-reported story rather than independently established archival fact. See Squale’s 2001 Heritage page.
Squale 2002 and Super Squale: different roles within one brand
The models illustrate why a brand name or heritage label is not enough to choose a dive watch. Squale describes the 2002 as a professional dive watch with stated water resistance of 1,000 metres and a helium valve. The undated product page supplies those specifications, not an independent test result: Squale 2002.

- Embark on a new journey with the Heritage Diver. A rotating bezel and luminous hands will stand out amongst a sea of underwhelming timepieces. And Automatic Movement ensures you're on time, every time.
- Make the most of your time with the Heritage Diver's automatic movement.
- A rotating copper tone bezel, screw down crown and luminous hands will set you apart from the crowd.
- Featuring a rubber silicone band, the Heritage Diver will hug your wrist and keep up during any adventure.
By contrast, Squale describes the Super Squale as a lighter skin diver. Its product page gives a 38 mm case and 200 metres of stated water resistance. These are specifications on the undated page, not a guarantee of suitability for every kind of diving: Squale Super Squale. Confirm the precise current reference and its full dimensions before buying.
Zodiac Super Sea Wolf: an early dive-watch lineage
Zodiac dates the Sea Wolf’s introduction to 1953 and presents current Super Sea Wolf watches as reinterpretations of archival designs. Its catalog includes categories such as Compression Diver and Skin Diver, giving buyers more than one expression of that lineage. See Zodiac’s Super Sea Wolf collection and its regional legacy history.

- Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
- Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
- Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
- Anti-reverse bezel
- Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
Zodiac’s legacy page states that a 1950s Super Sea Wolf had a water-pressure rating of 750 metres. That is a historical-model claim from Zodiac; do not apply it to a present-day Super Sea Wolf. Check the water-resistance specification for the exact current reference you are considering.

DOXA’s official heritage article places its current SUB ranges and Army watch within the brand’s dive-watch focus and describes a longer history with waterproof watches. That makes DOXA a relevant addition to a heritage shortlist, but the cited brand material does not establish specifications for a particular current SUB reference. Use DOXA’s heritage article for the brand-level context, then verify the exact model’s dimensions, movement and water resistance on its current product listing.

What to check before choosing a model
- Identify the exact reference. Collection names can cover variants with different specifications. Start with the model’s current product page for your region.
- Match the watch to its use. Compare the stated water resistance and intended use; do not treat a historical rating or a different model’s specification as applicable to the watch in front of you.
- Check fit and movement. Confirm case diameter, thickness and lug-to-lug distance, along with movement and strap or bracelet compatibility. Only selected dimensions are established in the cited material.
- Consider long-term support. Check warranty terms, service availability and parts support for the exact reference and your location.
- Confirm local availability and price. These can differ by market and were not established by the cited brand pages.
