The Longines Avigation Type A-7 1935 is a modern Heritage chronograph built around a striking, roughly 40-degree tilted dial—not a surviving military watch from 1935. Its single-pusher automatic movement and distinctive aviation styling give it real character, while a 41 mm case and 30 m water resistance make its size and intended use important buying considerations. The two reviewed references, white-dial L2.812.4.23.2 and black-dial L2.812.4.53.2, share the central concept but differ in dial execution. Prices reported in 2019 and 2020 are historical, not current quotes.
What makes the Type A-7 different?
Longines traces the design to a Type A-7 model ordered by the U.S. Air Force in 1935. The angled layout was intended to let a pilot read the indices while keeping a hand on the aircraft’s control yoke. Longines’ July 2020 release describes the angled dial in those terms and calls the present watch a reinterpretation, not a one-to-one reproduction: Longines’ July 2020 release.
The modern dial is rotated about 40 degrees, giving the watch an unmistakable orientation on the wrist. That historical rationale makes the design more than a decorative quirk, but it does not guarantee that every wearer will find it immediately intuitive. It is best approached as a deliberately unconventional chronograph, rather than as a conventional pilot watch with standard dial alignment.

Movement and chronograph operation
Both reviewed versions use the automatic calibre L788.2. It is a single-pusher chronograph with a column wheel, so the chronograph functions are controlled through one pusher rather than the more familiar separate start/stop and reset buttons. The reviews report a 30-minute counter, 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 54-hour power reserve; the white-dial review also specifies 27 jewels and identifies the movement as based on ETA A08.L11.

The single-pusher arrangement is part of the watch’s identity as well as its operation. Buyers accustomed to conventional two-pusher chronographs should make sure the control layout suits them. The date is another practical detail to consider: both reviewed references include one, and the 2019 reviewer specifically found its placement a negative.
How it wears: a bold 41 mm presence
At 41 mm across and 14 mm thick, this is not a small vintage-proportioned watch. The black reference measures 48 mm lug-to-lug according to Monochrome’s 2020 review. Long, straight lugs, the tilted dial, and the crown-and-pusher arrangement further increase its visual presence. For context, that review cites 51 mm as the diameter of historical military examples; the modern version is substantially smaller, but it remains a prominent wristwatch.

The unusual orientation asks for a brief adjustment in reading time. Hodinkee’s reviewer, who wore the watch for a week, and the Monochrome reviewers both described adapting to the angled display; those are individual experiences, not a guarantee that every wearer will respond the same way. Monochrome’s 2019 reviewer initially found the dial jarring before getting used to it. The central question for a prospective owner is whether that visual disruption feels engaging or inconvenient in daily use.
The white and black versions create different impressions. The white reference pairs its lacquered dial with Gothic numerals and warm-toned luminous material, while the black reference uses a matte surface and painted Arabic numerals. Confirm the dial and lume details by reference: the names and general A-7 design alone do not establish that a particular watch has every feature listed here.

Water resistance and everyday use
Both reviewed references are reported at 30 m water resistance. Treat that as modest protection for ordinary exposure, not as a swimming or diving rating. The available review specifications do not establish that either version is intended for water sports.
For daily wear, the more consequential trade-offs are the substantial case, a layout that may take time to read naturally, the date display, and limited water resistance. The design rewards someone who actively wants an unusual aviation chronograph; it is less compelling if the priority is discreet sizing or a familiar, glanceable dial.

Price: the published figures are historical
Monochrome reported a retail price of USD 3,500 or EUR 3,010 for the white-dial L2.812.4.23.2 in 2019. Its November 2020 review reported EUR 3,280 for the black-dial L2.812.4.53.2. These are publication-era figures in different currencies and years, not current offers or directly comparable present-day prices.
