Longines’s blue-dial Spirit Pilot lineup comprises two watches in two strap configurations: the automatic, time-only Spirit Pilot and the hand-wound Spirit Pilot Flyback chronograph. The choice is less about their small diameter difference than whether you want a flyback chronograph, prefer automatic winding, and favor a steel bracelet or blue rubber strap.
Fratello introduced the four references on October 3, 2026. Longines’s official Swiss-market listing independently confirms key details for the bracelet version of the Flyback, reference L3.721.4.93.6. The comparison below uses Fratello’s reported specifications where the official listing does not establish them; it is not based on hands-on testing.

What are the four blue-dial references?

- Spirit Pilot L3.809.4.93.9: blue rubber strap.
- Spirit Pilot Flyback L3.721.4.93.6: steel bracelet.

Choose the Spirit Pilot for automatic, time-only wear
The standard Spirit Pilot suits a buyer who wants a simpler display and automatic winding rather than a chronograph. Its reported 39 mm diameter and 11.5 mm thickness make it the slimmer of the pair, while its reported power reserve is four hours longer than the Flyback’s. Those figures describe the models as Fratello reported them, not a comparative fit test.

Choose the Flyback for a chronograph and its reset-and-restart function
A flyback chronograph lets the wearer reset and restart timing in one action, rather than stopping, resetting and starting in separate steps. Longines describes the function as useful for timing successive flight stages. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of the complication, not independent evidence of real-world navigational performance. The trade-off is a manually wound watch with a thicker case and shorter reported reserve than the automatic Spirit Pilot.
What does Longines mean by a pilot’s watch with a blue dial?
Here, the description refers to pilot-watch models in the Spirit Pilot family presented with blue dials; it does not establish a separate technical category. Longines describes the Flyback as a tool for pilots and says the complication can time successive flight stages. The practical distinction for a buyer is still the one between the automatic, time-only Spirit Pilot and the manually wound Flyback chronograph.

What is known about the Flyback’s history?
Longines’s official product copy says its first flyback-equipped model dates to the early 1930s and that the brand secured a patent on June 16, 1936. Fratello instead reports a 1935 filing date for Longines’s flyback chronograph patent. The available sources do not explain whether those dates refer to different milestones, so they should not be treated as a single reconciled chronology.
