Monochrome Watches reported a 20-piece edition and a CHF 50,000 price in 2024; neither figure establishes current pricing or availability.
What is the Louis Moinet Speed of Sound?
It is a limited-edition anniversary chronograph built around a vintage Valjoux 88 movement. Louis Moinet created the model for the brand’s 20th anniversary, combining the historic calibre with a modern case and a redesigned moon display. The reference is LM-130.20.50, and Monochrome Watches reported production of 20 pieces in 2024.
Louis Moinet describes itself as an independent Swiss watch brand based in Saint-Blaise, specializing in high-end watches that often use unusual materials and technology. Its official profile says the collection consists of limited editions or unique pieces (Louis Moinet brand profile). The watch was designed by Jean-Marie Schaller and manufactured by Les Ateliers Louis Moinet in Saint-Blaise, according to the Chicago Athenaeum’s award entry (Chicago Athenaeum award entry).
What does the Valjoux 88 do in this watch?
The Valjoux 88 was originally a hand-wound chronograph calibre combining a moonphase and triple-calendar indications. Fratello dates its production to approximately 1947–1974. In the Speed of Sound, Louis Moinet removed the calendar indications and 12-hour chronograph counter, leaving a simplified display suited to the new dial. The movement is decorated and visible through the sapphire caseback, with hand-engraved gold bridges, as described by Monochrome Watches (Monochrome Watches; Fratello).

Louis Moinet’s 2024 press material states that 13,218 Valjoux 88 movements were made between 1947 and 1974. That is the brand’s production figure, rather than an independently verified ledger (Louis Moinet press release).
Published power-reserve specifications conflict: Monochrome lists 40 hours, while Fratello lists 48. Without a confirming maker specification, it is better not to treat either figure as settled.
How does the telemeter scale work?
A telemeter estimates distance by measuring the interval between a visible event and the sound it produces. For the familiar storm example, start the chronograph when lightning flashes and stop it when the thunder arrives. The elapsed time can then be read against the watch’s telemeter scale as an approximate distance.

The moon indication uses a slightly domed disc with a hand-drawn luminous lunar motif. A piece of Dhofar 457, a lunar meteorite, is set on that same disc. The Chicago Athenaeum describes the fragment as symbolizing the full moon and says the lunar motif was painted by hand with luminescent paint (Chicago Athenaeum award entry).
That combination makes the display more than a conventional printed moonphase: it places a documented design element and a meteorite fragment together on the indication. The award entry’s description establishes the design intent; it does not provide independent provenance documentation for the meteorite fragment.

How should a collector assess it?
The Speed of Sound’s appeal rests on the combination of a historic, hand-wound movement and a distinctive modern execution. Before considering one, a collector would want to verify:
- Movement provenance and service history: confirm that the Valjoux 88 is present and ask for records of its restoration or servicing.
- Modification details: establish which original complications were removed and how the remaining chronograph and moon display function.
- Condition and legibility: inspect the dial, meteorite elements, hands, case and chronograph operation in person or through detailed documentation.
- Materials and documentation: request evidence supporting the case and meteorite descriptions.
- Scarcity and price: verify the exact reference and edition details, then compare the asking price with current condition and seller documentation rather than relying on a 2024 price report.
- Serviceability: discuss access to qualified service for the vintage calibre and the watch’s modified complications.
Louis Moinet’s official historical account says its Compteur de Tierces was completed in 1816 and describes Louis Moinet as the inventor of the chronograph (Louis Moinet history). That is the brand’s own account of its history; the Speed of Sound’s more immediate distinction is the way it puts a modified vintage chronograph at the center of a contemporary, meteorite-accented design.
