How the Vivienne jump-hour display works
There are no conventional hour hands. Instead, two windows sit near Vivienne’s hands. The hour numeral appears in one window, then jumps to the other when 60 minutes have passed; the previous window shows a symbol related to that edition’s theme.
A fine, nearly transparent hand rotates once per hour to indicate the minutes. Its tip carries a different themed marker in each version: a tarot card, a playing card, or a monogram-flower juggling ball. Together, the jumping numeral and small moving character make the watch resemble a miniature automaton rather than a conventional dial.
The mechanism behind the jump
Louis Vuitton says the jump-hour system combines a Geneva, or Maltese-cross, mechanism with multi-level cams, springs, and ruby rollers. The brand attributes greater energy efficiency, display precision, and movement longevity versus a traditional star wheel and jumper spring to this design. Those are manufacturer claims in the 2022 launch announcement, not independently verified comparative test results.
