A low fade keeps the blend close to the ears and neckline, so it works with everything from a short crop to curls, a side part, or a pompadour. The options below vary the top’s length, texture, and finish; choose the one that suits your hair and routine, then describe the placement and shortest length you want your barber to cut.
What a low fade is—and how it differs from other fades
A low fade starts around or just above the ears and blends upward into longer hair. Compared with a mid or high fade, its transition sits lower on the head, leaving more of the sides and back at their original length. The top is a separate choice: it can be cropped, curled, swept, slicked, or left longer.

Barbers may use “low fade,” “low taper fade,” and “skin fade” differently. A taper can leave short hair at the bottom; a skin or bald fade cuts down to the scalp. To avoid a mismatch, describe where you want the blend to begin and whether you want visible scalp at the bottom. Haircut Inspiration’s low-fade guide and Men’s Hairstyles Today’s taper guide discuss these distinctions.
35 low fade haircut ideas
These are combinations of fade placement and top style, not a formal set of haircut categories. Use the descriptions to find a shape to show your barber; hair texture and the way your hair grows affect how each one will sit.

Short, textured, and fringe styles
- Textured crop: Keep the top short and choppy, with the low fade bringing a neat outline to the sides.
- French crop: Pair a cropped top with a short fringe brushed forward for a defined front edge.
- Natural short crop: Leave the top close to its natural texture rather than shaping it into distinct spikes.
- Messy fringe: Keep a longer, irregular fringe over the forehead and ask for a loose, piecey finish.
- Straight fringe: Cut the front into a more even line, contrasting the precise edge with the low blend.
- Curly fringe: Let curls fall forward over the forehead while keeping the sides faded low.
- Wavy crop: Leave enough length for waves to show across the top, with the sides kept close.
- Defined curls: Preserve curl length and shape on top, and use the fade to clean up around the ears.
- Short coily top: Keep a compact afro or coily shape above tapered, faded edges.
Close cuts and classic short styles
- Buzz cut: Choose an even, very short top and a low fade for a subtle change in length at the sides.
- Crew cut: Keep the top slightly longer toward the front, with the low fade tightening the outline.
- Ivy League: Leave enough length for a neat short side part, but keep the overall top compact.
- Short side part: Ask for a clean part and a tidy top that can be combed into place without much height.
Parts, comb-overs, and swept styles
- Textured side part: Combine a defined part with a less polished, textured finish on top.
- Comb-over: Keep the top long enough to comb to one side, with a smooth transition into the fade.
- Hard-part comb-over: Add a shaved part line to make the side part more pronounced.
- Wavy side part: Part and sweep the top while leaving its natural wave visible.
- Slick back: Leave enough length to comb the hair backward and choose a smooth finish.
- Layered slick back: Add layers through the longer top so the backward sweep has more separation.
- Natural sweep back: Brush the top back without making it as tight or glossy as a slicked style.
- Longer flow: Keep more length to let the top move naturally backward, with the fade limited to the lower sides.
Height and volume
- Pompadour: Keep the front longer and lift it upward and back for a structured, high-volume shape.
- Textured pompadour: Give the raised front a less uniform, more piecey finish.
- Quiff: Leave the front long enough to lift and sweep back, with less emphasis on a smooth pompadour shape.
- Faux hawk: Keep more length along the center and taper the sides into the low fade.
- High-volume top: Preserve extra length and height across the top, then keep the fade low so the contrast stays concentrated near the ears.
Longer and distinctive shapes
- Curly mullet: Keep curls longer at the back and on top, with a low fade cleaning up the sides.
- Wavy swept top: Leave the top long enough for waves to sweep across or back rather than cropping them short.
- Curly side sweep: Direct longer curls to one side while maintaining their definition.
- Loose slick-back flow: Combine a backward direction with enough length and movement to avoid a tightly combed look.
- Layered quiff: Add separation through the top so the lifted front looks less solid.
- Short faux hawk: Keep the central ridge modest in length for a restrained, easy-to-wear version.
- Textured crew cut: Keep a compact crew-cut shape, but add visible texture on top instead of a uniform finish.
- Curly crop: Keep curls short and rounded at the front, pairing the compact top with a low fade.
- Side-swept fringe: Leave the front longer and angle it to one side rather than cutting it straight across.
How to choose a low fade style
- Start with top length. A buzz cut or crop keeps the top compact; a quiff, pompadour, or longer flow needs more length to shape.
- Choose a direction and texture. Decide whether you want the hair forward, parted, swept back, lifted, or left in its natural curls or waves.
- Set the contrast. Tell your barber whether you want a subtle blend or a sharper transition, and whether the shortest area should retain hair or reach the scalp.
- Think about styling time. A textured crop is often presented as a lower-styling option, while a pompadour may take more work, including blow-drying and stronger hold. These are tendencies, not guarantees; your hair’s texture and length matter.
- Use face shape as a starting point, not a rule. Some style guides suggest adding height for round faces and treating oval faces as flexible, but personal preference and hair texture are better guides than a fixed formula. See Haircut Inspiration’s examples.
What to tell your barber for a low fade
Rather than relying on one label, explain the placement, how short the bottom should be, and what you want left on top. A guide suggests starting the fade about half an inch above the ears as one possible instruction—not a required measurement. Guard numbers and terminology can vary, so a photo and a description of the result are useful. Haircut Inspiration offers barber-request guidance, and Low Taper Fade Guide covers guard context.
- Name the placement: Say that you want the fade low, around or just above the ears, rather than midway up the sides.
- Describe the bottom: Specify whether you want the shortest part left very short or faded down to bare skin.
- Explain the transition: Ask for a subtle or sharp blend, and point out how high you want it to rise.
- Describe the top: Give the length you want to keep and name the shape—such as a crop, side part, curls, or pompadour.
- Bring a reference photo: Point to the fade height, top shape, or finish you like; one photo may not show all three clearly, so explain which feature matters most.
Styling and maintenance
Product is optional. For a textured crop or messy finish, style guides suggest matte clay or paste; for a structured or shiny pompadour or slicked look, they suggest pomade or gel. A pompadour example pairs blow-drying with strong-hold pomade, but the right approach depends on the finish you want and your hair. These are suggestions, not product requirements; no products were tested. See the style examples at Latest Hairstyles.
