But “500M” is not enough to establish what a particular used watch can safely do: the documented 500M-1 and 500M-3 are distinct variants, and an old example needs a current pressure test before water use. This guide focuses on the 500M-3 where variant-specific measurements are available; it distinguishes those claims from details reported for the broader 500M family.
Which LÜM-TEC 500M is this review about?
The name covers more than one documented version. TechCrunch reviewed the 500M-3 in 2011, while a separate owner post concerns the 500M-1. The variant-specific measurements and production details below refer to the 500M-3 unless noted otherwise. These are historical published specifications, not measurements or tests performed for this article.
Historical descriptions do not agree on production quantity: a 2010 launch-era account says the 500M-3 was a numbered run of 150, while a separate forum reproduction lists 200 for a 500M description without establishing that it is the same variant. Do not combine those figures or assume either applies to every 500M. Check the suffix and documentation for the particular watch.
How large and thick is the 500M-3?
The launch-era 500M-3 description reports a 44 mm case width excluding the crown, an 18.5 mm thickness and a 24 mm lug width. Those proportions make it a large, thick watch on paper; the 24 mm strap also creates a broad footprint. Wrist shape and personal fit vary, so try one on if possible and check whether its thickness clears a cuff comfortably.

- Lum-Tec Combat B60 24HRS Automatic Watch Timeless design meets exceptional functionality, crafted in Ohio, USA.
- Titanium Carbide gunmetal PVD-coated 316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel case with 200 meters water resistance for durability and versatility.
- Miyota Japan 9075 movement with 24-hour layout, hacking, and handwinding features ensures precise timekeeping.
- Curved sapphire crystal with military-grade AR coating and two-tone X1 Super-Luminova offer clear legibility in any light.
- Limited to 300 worldwide editions, each includes two military-style straps and lifetime free adjustments, catering to collectors and adventurers alike.
A separate historical 500M listing gives a 44 mm case and 24 mm lugs, but reports a 3 mm domed sapphire rather than the 500M-3 launch account’s 5 mm curved sapphire. That discrepancy is another reason to identify the reference before relying on a specification or ordering a replacement part.
What are the movement, bezel and lume like?
Movement
The 500M-3 launch description identifies a modified Japanese SII NH15 automatic movement with hand-winding capability. A separate historical 500M listing names a Seiko SII NH15 automatic/hand-winding movement. These are source-reported descriptions; no accuracy test or inspection of an individual watch is available here. For a used example, ask when it was last serviced and have a watchmaker assess its condition rather than assuming the movement is keeping time to specification.

Bezel and case finish
The 500M-3 description specifies a unidirectional bezel with orange luminous material and a stainless-steel case finished in dark-charcoal, bead-blasted titanium-carbide PVD. A separate 500M listing also describes a unidirectional luminous bezel and a PVD-coated case, but does not establish that every finish or bezel detail is identical across variants. On a listing, check that the bezel is present, rotates in the intended direction and has no obvious damage or looseness.
Lume
One 500M-1 owner described the lume as exceptionally bright after wearing the watch for a little over a month. That is a subjective impression from one owner, not a controlled comparison or an independently measured result. Ask for clear photographs in normal and low light if legibility matters to you, and judge the specific watch rather than treating that report as a guarantee.

Is the 500M really water resistant to 500 meters?
Historical descriptions report a 500 m (50 ATM) rating for the 500M family; the 500M-3 launch-era account also states 1,650 ft. A separate 500M listing describes a screw-lock triple-seal crown and threaded caseback. Those figures and construction details are published historical claims, not evidence that a particular watch still meets its original rating.
LÜM-TEC’s manual says crown and case gaskets wear and need periodic maintenance, with inspection and replacement as needed when the watch is opened for service. For an older used watch, have a qualified service provider inspect it and perform a fresh pressure test before exposing it to water. Do not infer present-day water resistance from the dial, seller assurances or the original rating alone.

What should you check before buying a used example?
- Confirm the variant. Look for the 500M-1 or 500M-3 reference on the watch, paperwork and listing. Compare the photographed watch with the claimed case, crystal and bezel details; historical descriptions differ.
- Request condition evidence. Ask for current, close-up photographs of the case, crystal, crown, caseback, bezel and strap, plus a description of any damage, replaced parts or service history.
- Verify mechanical condition. Ask whether the watch winds, starts and runs, and when it was last serviced. If accuracy or serviceability is important, have a watchmaker inspect the specific watch; no unit-specific accuracy result is established here.
- Check water resistance independently. Ask for a recent pressure-test result from a qualified provider. If none is available, treat the watch as unverified for water use and arrange inspection and testing before swimming or diving.
- Check fit and strap needs. The 500M-3 is reported at 44 mm across and 18.5 mm thick, with 24 mm lugs. Confirm that size suits your wrist and that any replacement strap is actually compatible; the lug width alone does not verify a particular strap.
- Confirm the sale terms. Get the exact reference, included accessories, return conditions and final price in writing. The current manufacturer policy describes conditions including notification within 48 hours of receiving an item for a return or exchange; check the current warranty and return policy directly, since terms can change.
Can you still buy a LÜM-TEC 500M, and what did it cost?
Current new availability and a verified present-day used price for the 500M were not established. A 2010 launch-era 500M-3 description reports an $825 launch price, but that is historical and should not be used as today’s market value. LÜM-TEC’s current homepage advertises a 2026 collection preorder; that does not establish that the 500M remains on sale. The separately listed Solar Marine 8 is a different watch, so its specifications are not evidence about the 500M.
If you find a listing, compare only examples with the same suffix and similar condition, and account for any servicing or pressure testing needed. Confirm the seller’s photos, reference and stated condition before treating the listing as the 500M variant advertised.

Is the LÜM-TEC 500M worth buying used?
It may suit a buyer seeking a large, distinctive mechanical diver with a dark-coated case and a reported 500 m rating. The case size, age and unverified condition make it a less straightforward choice for someone who needs a watch ready for water immediately. Its value depends on the exact variant, physical condition, service history, fit and asking price—not on the historical rating or launch price alone.
