The M.A.D.1 RED makes telling time part of its mechanical spectacle: two rotating cylinders display the hours and minutes, while a three-blade rotor dominates the view from above. It is a M.A.D.Editions watch associated with MB&F, not one of the brand’s Horological or Legacy Machines. MB&F confirms the design and movement concept, but the available official description does not establish measured readability, wrist comfort, or current price and availability.
What is the M.A.D.1 RED?
The M.A.D.1 RED is part of M.A.D.Editions, a label MB&F distinguishes from its own Machines. MB&F says founder Maximilian Büsser presented the original M.A.D.1 in June 2021 as a more accessible timepiece under a different label. That date refers to the original M.A.D.1; the official Red page does not establish when the RED edition was publicly unveiled. MB&F’s M.A.D.1 RED page and its M.A.D.1 collection page place the watch in that broader series.
Büsser describes the project as a creative alternative for people close to him who could not afford MB&F’s highly complex Machines. That is his stated motivation, not a current price comparison or a claim that the RED has a particular retail price.
How does the display work?
Instead of conventional hands, the M.A.D.1 RED uses two rotating cylinders mounted laterally to indicate hours and minutes. The time display is therefore integrated into the watch’s moving, sculptural appearance rather than laid out on a standard dial. The prominent triple-blade rotor is another defining visual feature.

This arrangement is unusual, but the official description does not show how quickly a wearer can read it in everyday conditions, how legible it is while the cylinders are turning, or how it performs in different lighting. Those are practical questions that require direct observation; the design description alone cannot settle them.
What powers the M.A.D.1 RED?
MB&F describes the movement as an upside-down modified Miyota movement. It does not give a caliber number on the RED product page. The movement is powered by a triple-blade winding rotor made from titanium and tungsten. MB&F also says Super-LumiNova becomes visible when it activates.

The description explains the broad architecture, but does not establish a power-reserve figure, frequency, accuracy, or service interval for this exact model. Those specifications should not be inferred from another M.A.D.1 variant.
What makes the M.A.D.1 RED different from the original M.A.D.1?
MB&F says the RED uses the original M.A.D.1 platform and the same case structure. Its stated changes are concentrated in color and controls:

The M.A.D.1 collection page lists Blue, Red, Green, Time to Love, and M.A.D.1S editions. That list does not make every specification interchangeable: dimensions, materials, and other technical details for one variant should not be assumed to apply to the RED.
What is confirmed—and what remains unknown?
The official RED description supports a review of the watch’s display concept, movement description, rotor, and edition-specific design changes. It does not establish several details buyers normally need for a full specification or ownership comparison:

Without those facts or hands-on assessment, it would be premature to judge fit, daily practicality, servicing costs, or value against another watch.

MB&F says it chose raffles after considering drops, queues, and waiting lists. The RED page invites visitors to register for notice of a future raffle, but that invitation does not establish that a raffle is open now or that a RED is currently in stock. Confirm availability and purchase terms directly with an authorized source; for any pre-owned example, independently verify the seller and the watch’s authenticity.

Did the M.A.D.1 RED win an award?
Yes. MB&F-hosted HM11 Architect press material records that the M.A.D.1 RED won the Challenge category at the 2022 Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. That is a named award result, not a test of accuracy, durability, or everyday usability.
Verdict
The M.A.D.1 RED’s strongest case is its integrated visual idea: rotating hour and minute cylinders and a conspicuous three-blade rotor make the mechanics central to the way the watch presents time. Its red treatment, slimmer rotor bezel, and round crown distinguish it from the original M.A.D.1 while retaining the same platform, according to MB&F. Whether the unconventional display works for a particular wearer—and whether the watch is a practical purchase at a particular price—cannot be established from the official description alone.
