The MAEN Manhattan 37 MSS.02 is a limited-edition collaboration with French creative seconde/seconde/ that turns a familiar integrated-bracelet watch into a pointed statement about the Manhattan Project. Its ice-grey dial has no logo, indices or indicators, and its seconds hand is shaped as a radiation symbol. MAEN says those choices represent “nuclear nothingness” and the project’s life-threatening consequences.
What is the MAEN Manhattan Project MSS.02?
MSS.02 is a special version of MAEN’s Manhattan 37, created with seconde/seconde/. Instead of adding decoration to the model, the collaboration removes the usual dial furniture and alters the seconds hand. MAEN describes the result as a “radical take” on the Manhattan 37. MAEN’s product page gives the model reference as MSS.02.

The design is intentionally difficult to read as a conventional watch. MAEN says: “By erasing the dial and modifying the seconds hand, we wanted to symbolize nuclear nothingness and life-threatening consequences of the Manhattan Project.” The radiation symbol therefore functions both as the seconds hand and as the collaboration’s central visual argument.
Design and specifications
The MSS.02 keeps the Manhattan 37’s stainless-steel case and integrated bracelet, but its bare dial shifts the emphasis from quick legibility to concept and texture. MAEN describes the dial as ice grey with a vertically elongated Côtes de Genève finish. The standard logo, indices and indicators are removed; the altered hand is named the “seconde/seconde/ Radiation Hand.”

The water-resistance figures conflict: MAEN’s current product and collection pages list 10 ATM, while Fratello’s June 2024 launch coverage gives 5 ATM (50 meters). The available sources do not explain whether the rating changed or whether one figure was reported incorrectly, so neither should be silently substituted for the other. MAEN’s current MSS.02 listing and Fratello’s launch article show the two figures.

MAEN displays this inscription on the caseback, attributing it to J. Robert Oppenheimer: “NOW I AM BECOME DEATH, THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS – I SUPPOSE WE ALL THOUGHT THAT, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.” The wording needs care: Fratello’s launch article describes the opening phrase as a paraphrased translation from Hindu scripture and identifies “I suppose we all thought that, one way or another” as Oppenheimer’s added words. The complete inscription should not be treated as a verbatim quotation from a single speech or text.
Release, price and current availability
The MSS.02 was offered as a 24-hour preorder beginning June 7, 2024 at 16:00 CEST. Fratello reported a launch price of €937.37 excluding taxes. MAEN’s current product page displays €936.80 including VAT, but marks the watch retired and unavailable, with an option to request notification if it becomes available. The two prices have different tax framing and page contexts; neither establishes what a buyer would pay on the resale market.
Because the watch is marked retired, treat it as a discontinued release rather than a currently available new model. Any resale availability or price depends on a specific live listing; verify the seller, condition and authenticity before relying on it.

MAEN stated that all of the designer’s royalties would be donated to the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation in Japan and the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons in Switzerland. That is the manufacturer’s stated intention; the available sources do not independently verify the amounts or confirm completion of the donations.
