Bangalore Watch Company calls it “space-qualified,” but its reported flight reached 114,000 feet (about 34.75 km)—well below the 100 km Kármán line convention used by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI). The testing story is intriguing, but the qualification claim should be understood as the maker’s description, not as an independently documented certification.
What the Apogee Karman Line is
Bangalore Watch Company introduced the Karman Line model in 2024 as part of its Apogee collection, which began in 2021 to tell stories connected to India’s space program. The watch combines that theme with a distinctive material choice: a blue PVD-coated dial made from Muonionalusta meteorite. The result is a limited-edition Indian-brand watch whose appeal rests as much on its dial and origin story as on its mechanical specification.
The model is limited to 50 watches. The maker’s product page lists a price of Rs. 240,000 and asks prospective buyers to contact the company about availability; both price and stock can change.
What “space-tested” means in this case
The maker’s account of the test
In an account dated July 25, 2025, Bangalore Watch Company describes three years of development and laboratory simulations involving low pressure, very low temperatures and vacuum conditions. The company says a watch was then carried in a carbon-fibre capsule beneath a hydrogen balloon to 114,000 feet (around 34.75 km). It reports a temperature of -60°C at altitude and says the payload was not pressurised. The product page says the watch returned by controlled parachute descent and kept accurate time.

These details come from the watchmaker’s own account. The reviewed material did not include an independent laboratory report, a published test protocol, a formal qualification standard or a certification record. Bangalore Watch Company’s “space-qualified” wording should therefore be attributed to the company, rather than treated as an independently certified status.
Did it cross the Kármán line?
No. The FAI says it and many organisations use 100 km as the boundary of space. The reported balloon altitude of about 34.75 km is far below that convention. “Karman Line” is the name of the watch model and project; the reported flight was a high-altitude stratospheric flight, not a crossing of the FAI’s 100 km boundary.

Bangalore Watch Company’s June 2024 pages say pressure and freeze testing preceded the flight and that a UK team was involved in the balloon launch. Those pages are maker-hosted summaries of press coverage, rather than the underlying independent reporting or laboratory records.

The maker specifies 100 metres of water resistance, but that number alone does not establish suitability for every kind of water activity. Check the company’s guidance for the intended use rather than assuming a particular activity is covered.

What to expect from a meteorite dial
The dial’s Widmanstätten pattern is natural, so its appearance varies from watch to watch. Bangalore Watch Company also warns that meteorite dials may have tiny imperfections and can develop patina, browning or spotting over years. Those changes are part of the material’s character, but they may not suit someone looking for a dial that remains visually uniform.

Who it may suit
- Consider it if you want a limited-edition watch from an Indian brand, value the individuality of a meteorite dial, and find the maker-reported balloon-flight story compelling.
- Look closely at the caveats if you expect “space-tested” to mean a publicly documented independent certification, or if you prefer a dial whose appearance will not naturally vary over time.
- Check the practical fit against the 40 mm case diameter, 44 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 12 mm thickness, as well as the 20 mm strap width.
The quick-release strap may be replaceable with a compatible 20 mm strap, but confirm both fit and attachment style with the seller. Bangalore Watch Company does not endorse third-party straps, and its listed warranty excludes straps and accessories.
