Marine Nationale, NATO and ZULU straps are all one-piece watch straps, but they are not interchangeable names for the same construction. NATO describes the British Ministry of Defence-derived design introduced in 1973: usually thin nylon, a second retaining section and flat rectangular hardware. ZULU is a commercial adaptation that normally uses thicker webbing, rounded loops and heavier hardware. Marine Nationale is a French Navy-associated family, best known today for elastic or woven straps that conform closely to the wrist.
The right choice depends on the watch’s lug width and clearance, how much stretch or bulk you want, and whether you prefer a two-layer pass-through that keeps the watch attached after one spring bar releases. No name guarantees military provenance or a universal safety advantage, so inspect the actual strap’s material, dimensions, fastening system and hardware.

What is the difference between Marine Nationale, NATO and ZULU straps?
They share the one-piece, pass-through concept: the strap is threaded beneath the watch so the case does not rely on two separate strap halves. Their differences are heritage, webbing, hardware and the way the strap sits under the case.
| Feature | Marine Nationale | NATO | ZULU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heritage | French Navy-associated diver straps | British Ministry of Defence strap introduced in 1973 | Commercial adaptation of the pass-through idea |
| Typical material | Elastic parachute-style webbing or woven fabric | Nylon ribbon | Thicker nylon webbing |
| Under-watch structure | Usually a single pass or elastic loop; fastening varies | Usually two layers, with a retaining section under the watch | Often single layer, although “NATO ZULU” versions add a second layer |
| Hardware | Hook, D buckle or self-gripping system, depending on the model | Flatter rectangular keepers and pin buckle | Rounded, heavier loops and a chunky buckle |
| Wrist feel | Stretchy and conforming | Balanced but generally taller because of the extra layer | Thickest and most hardware-heavy |
| Typical use case | Comfort, hot weather and changing wrist size | General daily wear and the classic military look | Large tool watches and users who prefer robust hardware |
Retail terminology is loose. A listing called “NATO” may use a single-pass layout, while a “NATO ZULU” may combine thick webbing with a second retaining layer. Read the dimensions and product photographs rather than relying on the label alone.

Where did the NATO strap come from?
The 1973 British MoD design
NATO’s official history states that the strap was created by the British Ministry of Defence in 1973. The original specification used 20 mm nylon in Admiralty grey, chrome-plated brass buckles and enough additional length to wear the watch over clothing. Service personnel ordered it through a G-10 requisition form, which led to the nickname “G-10.”
Why is it called NATO?
The strap was a British military item, not a consumer product branded by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. “NATO” became common because military stock identification used NATO Stock Number terminology. NATO’s history describes it as an article used by the forces of a NATO member country, rather than a NATO-branded accessory.
What does the current British record show?
A UK Ministry of Defence freedom-of-information response lists one currently procured one-piece grey nylon strap under NSN 6645-99-124-2986. That response also says there were no current Defence Standards for watches or watch straps in the material supplied. A modern strap can therefore resemble the historical pattern without being an issued item.
What is a Marine Nationale strap?
French Navy associations
TUDOR’s account of French Navy divers describes two commonly used forms: black braided nylon and, more rarely, handmade elastic straps made from elastic bands recycled from French-issue parachutes. Historic elastic examples are associated with green webbing and a yellow or red central thread. These details explain why “Marine Nationale” is used for both braided fabric and elastic designs.
Modern Marine Nationale-style construction
A contemporary example documented by TUDOR for the Pelagos FXD uses a 22 mm navy-blue polyethylene woven ribbon, a titanium D buckle and a self-gripping fastening system. The ribbon is woven in France by Julien Faure. That is one documented design, not a universal specification for every strap sold as Marine Nationale.
Is every Marine Nationale strap genuinely military issue?
No. “Marine Nationale” is primarily a heritage description in today’s retail market. Unless a seller provides verifiable provenance, treat “MN style” as describing the look or construction. Check whether the strap is actually elastic, what fastening it uses, its width and thickness, and whether the claim concerns an original surplus item or a newly made interpretation.

How does ZULU differ from a NATO strap?
The conventional distinction is construction rather than a formal military standard. NATO straps normally use thinner ribbon, flat rectangular keepers and a second retaining section. ZULU straps normally use thicker webbing, solid rounded loops and a heavier buckle. This gives ZULU models a chunkier appearance and can suit a large dive or field watch, but it also increases thickness and weight.
Manufacturers use “ZULU” inconsistently. Some make a single-pass strap with two rounded loops; others sell a two-layer “NATO ZULU.” Before ordering, verify the number of layers under the case, the webbing thickness, keeper shape and buckle dimensions. Esprit’s published dimensions for its nylon ZULU and NATO ZULU models are approximately 27 cm in length and 1.5 mm in thickness, but those figures apply to the listed models rather than every ZULU strap.
Which strap is safest if a spring bar fails?
A two-layer NATO layout keeps the watch attached to the strap if one spring bar releases: the strap remains connected at the other bar and the retaining section limits how far the case can move. The same extra layer raises the watch on the wrist and can feel bulky under a close-fitting cuff.
A single-pass ZULU or Marine Nationale design sits lower because less material passes under the case. Its retention behavior depends on the exact loop and fastening arrangement, so it should not be described as universally safer or less safe. Elastic straps can maintain contact with the wrist as they stretch, but a failure at a bar, hook or buckle still depends on that model’s construction.
For demanding use, inspect the spring bars as well as the strap. The strap cannot compensate for bars that are the wrong diameter, too short, bent or poorly seated in the lug holes. A watch with fixed bars requires a strap that can be threaded without removing the bars.
Are Marine Nationale straps elastic?
Many modern Marine Nationale-style straps are elastic, especially those inspired by recycled parachute webbing, but the term also covers non-elastic woven or braided fabric. Stretch lets the strap conform to the wrist and accommodate small changes in wrist size, which is useful in hot weather when wrists expand.

Elasticity changes how you size the strap. It should be snug enough to prevent the case from sliding, without being tightened until the webbing constantly pulls against the buckle or hook. A non-elastic fabric version behaves more like a conventional NATO and needs a conventional tail adjustment.
What size NATO, ZULU or Marine Nationale strap do you need?
Start with the watch’s lug width, then confirm thickness and length. These styles are commonly sold in 20 mm and 22 mm widths, but the correct size is the distance between the inside faces of the watch’s lugs, not the diameter of the case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Measure the lug gap. Use a ruler or caliper between the inner lug faces. A 20 mm watch needs a 20 mm strap; do not force a wider strap into the gap.
- Check clearance. Measure the space between the spring-bar shoulders and the case. Thick ZULU webbing, rounded loops and a folded two-layer NATO section need more room than thin nylon.
- Confirm the length. The original NATO pattern included extra tail for wearing over clothing. A strap around 27 cm, such as the dimension published for certain Esprit nylon models, may be excessive on a small wrist and useful over a wetsuit or jacket.
- Account for the watch and clothing. A tall dive watch or a thick caseback may need a longer strap; a slim dress watch usually looks and feels better with thinner webbing and less tail.
- Check fixed-bar compatibility. If the watch has permanently attached bars, choose a strap whose buckle, keepers and folded sections can pass between the bars and case.
How do you install a pass-through strap?
Installation is straightforward, but threading direction affects comfort and tail management.
- Remove the watch’s existing strap while keeping the spring bars seated in the lugs.
- Slide the long strap end under the first spring bar, across the back of the case and under the second spring bar.
- For a traditional NATO, pull the watch toward the buckle until the case is centered, then feed the free end through the lower retaining section.
- Fasten the buckle and fold the remaining tail through the keepers. If the tail protrudes, use the strap’s keeper rather than cutting it; cutting can expose unfinished webbing.
- With an elastic or single-pass design, center the case and adjust tension gradually. The strap should not pinch the wrist or allow the watch to rotate freely.
- Pull lightly on the case and inspect both spring bars from the side. The bar ends should be fully seated in the lug holes before wearing the watch outside the home.
How do the materials and hardware affect comfort?
Nylon ribbon
Thin nylon dries quickly and slides easily through keepers. It produces the familiar NATO profile but can feel stiff when new and may create a taller stack under the watch because of the retaining layer.
Thicker webbing
ZULU-style webbing resists folding and gives a substantial feel. Its stiffness can be reassuring on a large case, yet it may crowd narrow lug gaps or press against a small wrist. Confirm the manufacturer’s thickness rather than assuming all nylon is equally thin.
Elastic webbing
Elastic fabric spreads pressure and follows wrist movement. Its stretch can make a watch comfortable during temperature changes, while the fabric’s recovery and the fastening hardware determine how securely it stays positioned. Elasticity is a material property, not proof of military origin.

Hardware shape and finish
Flat rectangular keepers have a low visual profile and match the classic NATO appearance. Rounded ZULU loops and a heavier buckle add mass and can catch on a cuff. Buckle material and finish also affect color matching with the watch case, but a matching finish does not indicate a particular military specification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which strap should you choose for common watch setups?
For an all-purpose 20 mm watch
A 20 mm nylon NATO is the easiest starting point when you want broad availability, moderate thickness and the traditional two-layer retention arrangement. Admiralty grey reflects the historical color, while black and other colors are modern consumer options.
For a large tool or dive watch
A 20 mm or 22 mm ZULU can balance a heavy case with thicker webbing and substantial hardware. Measure the clearance carefully; a chunky loop that fits one case may bind against another.
For changing wrist size or hot climates
A Marine Nationale-style elastic strap is a practical choice when conforming comfort and quick adjustment matter more than a rigid military layout. Select the fastening system that lets you set tension precisely.

For a historically accurate impression
Look for documented details rather than a name alone: the original NATO pattern was 20 mm Admiralty grey nylon with chrome-plated brass hardware, while French Navy-associated examples include black braided nylon and elastic parachute webbing. A seller should distinguish reproduction, “style” and documented surplus.
What mistakes should you avoid when buying?
- Assuming names are standards. NATO, ZULU and Marine Nationale are used broadly in retail; construction details matter more than the headline.
- Ignoring thickness. A strap can match the lug width yet fail to pass between the bars and case.
- Buying by case diameter. Lug width, not the watch’s 40 mm or 42 mm case measurement, determines strap width.
- Overlooking length. Extra NATO tail intended for clothing can leave too much material on a bare wrist.
- Treating “military” as proof. A current product may copy a military form without being issued or made under a Defence Standard.
- Confusing a two-layer ZULU with a traditional NATO. Compare the underside photograph and the number of keepers before ordering.
- Reusing damaged spring bars. Replace bars that are bent, corroded or the wrong length, and verify that both ends engage the lugs.
How should you care for these straps?
Follow the maker’s cleaning instructions because dyes, coatings and elastic blends vary. In general, remove the strap periodically, rinse away sweat and salt with clean water, and let it dry fully before reinstalling it. Do not store a damp strap against the case, and inspect stitching, holes, hooks, keepers and buckle edges for fraying or deformation.

- Easy Installation: All you need to do is thread the nylon band through the raw ear rods at both ends, thread out the dial, adjust the position, and thread the long strap into the loop
Elastic webbing deserves particular attention: repeated stretching, ultraviolet exposure and body oils can reduce recovery over time. Replace it when it no longer holds the watch centered or when the fabric shows permanent thinning. Nylon can also fray at cut edges, so avoid trimming the tail unless the manufacturer provides a sealed finishing method.
What is the practical verdict?
Choose a NATO when you want the classic 20 mm nylon pass-through, a second retaining section and a low-complexity daily strap. Choose a ZULU when thicker webbing, rounded loops and heavier hardware suit the watch and your preference for a rugged feel. Choose a Marine Nationale-style strap when elastic comfort, conforming fit and quick adjustment are the priorities.
Whichever name appears on the listing, confirm lug width, thickness, total length, layer arrangement and fastening hardware. Those measurable details determine fit and retention more reliably than heritage terminology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a one-piece strap on a watch with fixed spring bars?
Yes, but the strap must be designed to thread through the narrow gap around the fixed bars. Measure that opening and avoid models whose buckle or folded keeper cannot pass through it; a conventional two-piece strap will not work without adapters.
Will a NATO strap make my watch sit higher?
Usually, because the traditional layout places a second layer of nylon beneath the case. A single-pass ZULU or elastic design can reduce that added height, although thick webbing and rounded hardware may still increase the overall bulk.
How can I tell whether a Marine Nationale strap is genuinely vintage?
Ask for provenance, period photographs or documentation identifying the original source. Color details such as green webbing with a contrasting central thread can echo historic examples, but appearance alone cannot establish French Navy issue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCan I wear these straps in seawater?
Nylon and elastic webbing can be used around water when the maker permits it, but salt and sand should be rinsed out promptly. Dry the strap and inspect the buckle and spring bars afterward, since corrosion or trapped grit can compromise the attachment points.
