Mark Knopfler and the Omega Speedmaster: What He’s Said About His Watches

Mark Knopfler said his watch collection began with an Omega Speedmaster and called the watch he wore in a Classic Rock interview a 1969 model. Other reported identifications need a separate caveat.

Mark Knopfler said his watch collection began with an Omega Speedmaster—and that the watch he was wearing during a Classic Rock interview was a 1969 Speedmaster. Those are interview-era details, not confirmation of what he owns or wears today. Watch publications have also identified other Speedmaster models associated with him, but those identifications should be distinguished from Knopfler’s own remarks.

What watch does Mark Knopfler wear?

In a Classic Rock interview, Knopfler said he owned “about half a dozen” watches and that his collection started with an Omega Speedmaster. Asked about the watch he had on during the interview, he identified it as a “69 Speedmaster.” The interview records these as statements made at that time; it does not establish his present-day collection or what he wears now.

Knopfler also described how his interest developed: “Angefangen hat es mit der Omega Speedmaster, die ja auf dem Mond war, das führte mich weiter zu ihrer Vorgängerin, einer Lemania.” In English, this means roughly, “It started with the Omega Speedmaster, which had been on the moon; that led me on to its predecessor, a Lemania.” The German sentence is the wording published by Classic Rock; the English rendering is a translation, not a verified original-language quotation.

Which other Speedmasters have been associated with him?

Watch publications have reported additional model identifications, but the available accounts do not show Knopfler personally confirming them.

Omega
  • Model 310.30.42.50.01.002
  • Horando and CHRONEXT report that he has a classic vintage Moonwatch.
  • Both publications also associate him with a two-tone Speedmaster ’57. Their reporting describes a steel-and-red-gold model; CHRONEXT gives the reference as 331.22.42.51.01.001.

Horando’s 2023 article reports that this Speedmaster ’57 debuted in 2013, measures 41.5 mm in diameter and uses the automatic Co-Axial Calibre 9300. CHRONEXT’s 2022 account gives the same broad material and movement context. These are historical specifications reported by those publications, not a current Omega catalog check or firsthand confirmation of Knopfler’s ownership.

How the Speedmaster models differ

“Speedmaster” names a family, not one fixed specification. A Speedmaster overview distinguishes the classic Moonwatch’s hand-wound movement and Hesalite crystal from other Speedmaster variants, which include automatic and ceramic or Co-Axial models. Specifications depend on the exact reference, so a model associated with Knopfler should not be treated as representative of every Speedmaster.

What to check when comparing a Speedmaster

Knopfler’s comments explain his personal interest, but they are not a specification sheet for every watch attributed to him. For a meaningful comparison, identify the precise reference and consider:

  • Movement: Check whether the exact reference is hand-wound or automatic; the family includes both.
  • Crystal and case materials: Confirm the materials for the reference rather than assuming all models use Hesalite or the same case construction.
  • Reference, condition and provenance: These matter especially for vintage and pre-owned watches. The reporting cited here does not establish the condition or provenance of any particular example.
