Omega should bring back the Seamaster Professional 300M ref. 2254.50—not as a replica, but as a modern watch that keeps the original’s unusually clear, tool-focused design. The appeal is its combination of sword hands, bold luminous markers and restrained black wave dial. The revival described here is an enthusiast’s proposal, not an Omega announcement.
Why the 2254.50 still stands out
In his January 30, 2022 Fratello Watches article, Nacho Conde Garzón makes the case for the 2254.50 as a distinctive fifth-generation Seamaster Professional 300M, released in 2000. Its design reads differently from the more decorative Seamaster Professional models he contrasts it with: practical details dominate, and the dial remains comparatively restrained.
- Sword hands: Broad, sharply shaped hands make the display recognizable at a glance.
- Prominent lume: Blocky luminous markers, especially the oversized 12 o’clock marker, give the dial a bold, functional layout.
- Black wave dial: The wave pattern adds texture without overwhelming the dark face.
- Discreet date: The date is present without becoming the dial’s focal point.
- Aluminum bezel insert and Speedmaster-style bracelet: These details contribute to the watch’s less polished, more tool-oriented character.
Conde Garzón’s contrast is with Seamaster Professional designs built around more prominent wave dials and skeleton hands. The 2254.50’s identity comes from its hands and legibility first.
The design has roots in earlier Seamasters
Conde Garzón places the sword-hand look within a longer Seamaster history, pointing to the 1960s Seamaster 300 ref. 165.024 and orange sword-shaped minute hands on several 1970s professional dive watches. In his account, the shape reflects the practical priority of quickly reading a dive watch. This is the historical framing in his 2022 editorial, rather than a claim presented here as independently verified against Omega’s archives.

What a modern 2254.50 revival could look like
The strongest version would preserve the original’s visual logic while updating the materials and movement. Keep the black dial, sword hands and large luminous plots; bring the watch into the contemporary Seamaster 300M family with a ceramic bezel and current movement technology. A modern bracelet or an Omega rubber strap could complete the update without turning the design into a replica.
Conde Garzón’s proposed scenario pairs the original’s hands and dial layout with contemporary Seamaster features and caliber 8800. The 2254.50 itself used caliber 1120, which the article describes as chronometer-rated. The 8800 is a suggestion for an imagined reissue—not a movement Omega has announced for this watch.

The argument for a return is straightforward: the 2254.50 has a coherent identity that can survive a materials and movement update. Its bold markers and sword hands offer a legible alternative to a more decorative dial, while a ceramic bezel and contemporary movement would make the idea feel like a new Seamaster rather than a museum piece.

That is the case Conde Garzón makes in his Fratello Watches editorial published January 30, 2022. It is an appeal to Omega, not evidence that the company intends to revive the reference.
