It is a striking design curiosity, but the tiny date is easier to admire up close than to read at a glance. Its exact production year remains uncertain.
What makes this Medana unusual?
In his June 18, 2020 feature, Tomas Rosputinsky describes a Medana fitted with the MST 234 cylinder movement, a tiny date aperture and a rotating seconds disc. The seconds display is not a small-seconds hand: a disc turns to indicate the passing seconds. Rosputinsky says the date window on this example is no taller than one millimeter. The pairing of the date and rotating seconds display gives the dial its appeal. The date lettering is exceptionally fine, according to Rosputinsky, and reading it takes focus. This is a detail to inspect rather than a particularly glanceable calendar display.
How old is the watch?
The production date is not confirmed. Rosputinsky says the dial styling suggests the 1930s or 1940s and calls the watch about 90 years old in his 2020 article. That age is a characterization, not documented provenance.

Rosputinsky consulted Medana collector and archive maintainer David Butcher, who argued that a 1940s date was unlikely because Medana had stopped making cylinder escapements in the 1930s. Butcher’s movement-based reasoning is useful context, but it is an attributed opinion reported in the article—not a factory record establishing when this particular watch was made. The same article reports that the brand was registered in 1909; it does not supply an original registration record or a factory catalogue for this model.
What the movement means for wearing it
Rosputinsky cautions that the MST 234 offers limited precision and rudimentary shock resistance, and advises against treating the watch as a robust everyday choice—for example, he cautions about biking with it. These are the author’s practical observations, not findings from a documented timing or shock test.

For any old mechanical watch, a qualified watchmaker’s inspection is sensible before regular wear. A 2025 repair account describes one non-running Medana trench watch whose disassembly revealed dust, dirt, hair and dried lubrication; it concerns a different watch and does not diagnose this MST 234. The Time Savers’ repair account illustrates why age and apparent condition alone cannot establish readiness for use.

No. Other Medana watches had different calendar arrangements, but their features should not be attributed to this MST 234. A 2023 Fratello article describes a separate Medana Special Calendar with a rotating-crystal day/date control and mentions another Medana with a tiny date window and running-seconds disc. What to check if you are considering a vintage Medana
- Identify the exact watch. Similar brand names and calendar designs do not establish that two examples share a movement or construction.
- Ask what supports the dating. Dial style can suggest an era, but the production date of this example is not confirmed by a factory record in the cited account.
- Inspect the display and condition. A tiny aperture may be difficult to read, while originality and condition need to be assessed on the individual watch.
- Get a mechanical inspection. Have a qualified watchmaker assess operation and service needs before relying on an old movement for regular wear.
