Both have 38.5 mm steel cases, but they differ in movement, chronograph function, dial color, edition size, and official page price. As of October 8, 2026, Massena LAB’s pages showed both models as sold out.

Both official product pages list a stainless-steel case measuring 38.5 mm across, 14.6 mm thick, and 45.5 mm lug-to-lug. Each has two registers: small seconds at 9 o’clock and a 30-minute counter at 3. The watches also share a bidirectional Arabic-numeral bezel, a box mineral crystal with sapphire coating, two brown sueded calfskin strap configurations including a Bund style, and a two-year guarantee. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results. Massena LAB’s Tribute page and Flyback page provide the model details.
How the Flyback and Tribute differ
Flyback: automatic movement and flyback function
The Flyback is the more complicated of the pair in chronograph operation: its flyback function allows the timing sequence to be reset and restarted in one action rather than requiring separate stop, reset, and restart presses. It pairs that feature with an automatic Arola caliber 7750 FlyB, a black dial, and a 25-piece edition. Massena LAB listed it at $2,995.
Tribute: manual winding and tropical-brown dial
The Tribute uses a manually wound Sellita SW510BHa and a conventional chronograph. Its tropical-brown dial is the most visible distinction from the black Flyback; Massena LAB says the color was inspired by William Massena’s own vintage Type XX. The Tribute is limited to 99 pieces and was listed at $1,995.

The official page prices differ by $1,000, but the product information does not establish that any single movement feature accounts for the full difference. The selection is clearer as a choice between the Flyback’s automatic flyback configuration and the Tribute’s hand-wound movement and brown-dial interpretation.
What the Type XX inspiration means
Massena LAB presents the collaboration as a modern tribute to the mid-century aviation chronograph tradition. In its product-page history, the brand describes Type XX as a design associated with French Ministry of Defense contracts in the 1950s and 1960s, with requested features including a flyback chronograph, luminous Arabic numerals, two registers, a bidirectional 12-hour bezel, and at least 35 hours of power reserve. The brand also says Mathey-Tissot supplied watches connected with Breguet’s postwar Type 20 production. These historical details are Massena LAB’s account; they should not be read as proof that either modern collaboration model was military-issued.

The Flyback echoes elements of the described specification through its chronograph complication, black dial, luminous Arabic numerals, and two-register layout. The Tribute takes a more interpretive route: it forgoes flyback and uses a warm brown dial to evoke the aged appearance of vintage watches. The result is two distinct takes on the same inspiration rather than one watch offered in different colors.

As of October 8, 2026, both official Massena LAB product pages displayed a sold-out status. The $2,995 Flyback and $1,995 Tribute figures are prices shown on those pages, not verified current resale values. No current third-party inventory or market price is established here, so a sold-out listing should not be taken as evidence of what either watch costs on the secondary market.

Anyone looking for one should confirm the exact reference—MTML-XX for the Flyback or MTML-T-XX for the Tribute—along with the seller and availability at the time of purchase. A generic Mathey-Tissot chronograph listing is not necessarily one of these limited collaboration watches.
