The MB&F HMX Black Badger is a limited-edition HMX collaboration with James Thompson, the artist and designer known as Black Badger. Which Black Badger watch is this?
“Black Badger” can refer to more than one watch collaboration. This review covers the MB&F HMX Black Badger—the model identified in Brice Goulard’s 18 April 2016 Monochrome Watches review. A Fratello Watches Black Badger archive also documents coverage of multiple watch-related collaborations, so the name alone does not identify this particular model.
MB&F’s HMX takes inspiration from supercars and presents its mechanism in an engine-like upper section. The Black Badger edition was created with James Thompson, who is known by the name Black Badger. Rather than treating the watch as a standard dial with hands, it combines sculptural, car-inspired detailing with a forward-facing display.
What makes the Black Badger edition distinctive?
The HMX Black Badger replaces the HMX’s painted, car-colour-inspired upper details with machined solid luminous components. The review names three versions: Purple Reign, Radar Green and Phantom Blue. After being charged with light, the components glow. The material is therefore part of the watch’s prominent case-top design, not simply luminous paint applied to conventional hands and markers.

The effect suits the HMX’s automotive theme: the luminous pieces resemble details on an engine rocker cover. It is a striking, highly specific design choice. Whether it appeals will depend more on a buyer’s taste for bold, sculptural watches than on any conventional measure of dial restraint.
How does the time display work?
The time appears vertically on the front of the watch rather than on a horizontal dial on top. Two rotating discs carry the hours and minutes, and a pair of triangular optical prisms redirects their display so it can be read from the front.

- Minutes: a trailing disc indicates the minutes.
- Prisms: two triangular optical prisms redirect the view from the horizontal discs to the forward-facing display.
Monochrome’s reviewer said legibility was not perfect, but judged the two-prism arrangement easier to read than the one-prism setup on the HM5 used for comparison. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled readability test or a guarantee that every wearer will find the display clear.
Case, materials and proportions
Monochrome reports a case made from Grade 5 titanium and stainless steel, with dimensions of 46.8 × 44.3 × 20.7 mm. The 2016 review describes the case as inspired by 1960s cars and pairs it with a perforated leather strap.

Those measurements make this a substantial, thick watch on paper. Its unusual front-facing display and architectural case also mean that diameter alone does not tell the whole story of how it will sit or feel on a particular wrist. The cited review does not provide wrist measurements or a standardized wearability assessment, so a prospective buyer should seek an opportunity to inspect the exact watch in person where possible.
Movement architecture
The review describes a Sellita-based movement and gear train that powers an in-house MB&F hours-and-minutes module. It also notes a personalized 22-karat gold rotor. This arrangement distinguishes the mechanism driving the watch from the specialized module that translates its output into the HMX’s unusual disc display.

Edition size and historical launch price
Monochrome’s 2016 review reports a total production of 54 pieces, divided among the three colourways as three editions of 18. It gives a launch price of CHF 48,000 before taxes. These are figures reported at launch in 2016; they do not establish current availability, a present-day asking price or the value of an individual example.
Who is the HMX Black Badger for?
This model is most compelling for someone drawn to MB&F’s mechanical display experiments, supercar-inspired design and luminous materials used as sculptural components. Its appeal is less straightforward for someone who prioritizes a conventional dial, immediate legibility or modest case proportions. The 2016 review provides a detailed editorial description, but not a structured comparison with current alternatives or a current-market assessment.
