There is no single best mechanical chronograph with a tachymeter scale. The two best-documented picks serve different buyers: the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ055 is an automatic mechanical chronograph, and the Tissot PR516 Chronograph Mechanical, reference T149.459.21.051.00, is a hand-wound mechanical alternative. Choose between them by how you want the watch to wind and how it fits your wrist, not by a blanket ranking.
What a chronograph does on the wrist
A chronograph is a stopwatch mechanism built into a watch. Its elapsed-time function runs alongside the ordinary time display, so you can keep reading the time while a timing session is in progress. Hamilton’s Chronograph Watch Guide describes the usual control layout: the upper pusher starts and stops timing, and the lower pusher resets the hands to zero.
Hamilton frames the function this way: “Besides its basic stopwatch utility, many chronograph watches feature a tachymeter scale.” The guide goes on to explain that the scale converts elapsed time into a rate.
How the tachymeter scale works
A tachymeter is a printed scale, usually on the bezel, that turns an elapsed time into an average speed. The method is simple. You start the chronograph as a vehicle or runner passes a marker, stop it at a second marker a known distance away, and read the speed where the second hand stopped against the scale.
#1 Best Overall
- Chronograph Movement with Tachymeter: Features a tachymeter index along its outer minute track to measure speed
- Stainless Steel Adjustable Bracelet: Stainless steel bracelet fits comfortably on your wrist and can be adjusted for a custom fit
- Sturdy Stainless Steel Watch Case: Sleek and scratch-resistant stainless steel
- Iconic 60's Design: This timepiece retains the classic Marlin features with a domed acrylic crystal lens and retro-style square markers at 3, 9, and 12 o'clock
- Water Resistant to 50 Meters
The arithmetic behind a typical 1 km scale is straightforward. If a kilometre takes 36 seconds, the average speed is 3,600 ÷ 36 = 100 km/h. The scale only works when the distance is known and the timed interval is a real, measured run; it does not sense speed on its own. Read the scale’s printed units and range on the watch itself, because the two candidates below do not describe their scales in the same detail.
The two documented candidates
Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SRQ055: the automatic option
Seiko’s product page identifies the SRQ055 as a mechanical Speedtimer with a tachymeter bezel and describes it as an automatic chronograph. The listing says the movement belongs to the 8R series, identifies caliber 8R48, and states that the tachymeter scale sits on the outer bezel. Seiko also describes the movement as using a column wheel and a vertical clutch, which are traditional chronograph control features. Those are design descriptions from the manufacturer, not an independent performance test.

How to choose between them
Pick by the need you actually have, and state that need clearly:
Rank #4
- Chronograph Movement with Tachymeter: Features a tachymeter index along its outer minute track to measure speed
- Natural Leather Strap: Adjustable leather strap fits comfortably on your wrist
- Sturdy Stainless Steel Watch Case: Sleek and scratch-resistant stainless steel
- Iconic 60's Design: This timepiece retains the classic Marlin features with a domed acrylic crystal lens and retro-style square markers at 3, 9, and 12 o'clock
- Quick-Release Spring Bars: Refresh your look in seconds with endless strap options - no tools required
- If you want a watch that runs on wrist movement, the automatic Seiko SRQ055 is the better fit. You will not have to wind it daily to keep it running, though a watch left unworn will stop when its power reserve runs out.
- If you enjoy the winding ritual, or want a watch that stays running only when you wind it, the hand-wound Tissot PR516 suits you. Its 67-hour power reserve means a full winding lasts a little under three days.
- If case size is the deciding factor, the Tissot’s 41 mm case and 13.67 mm thickness are published figures you can compare with your wrist and cuff. The Seiko’s dimensions must be checked in its current listing before you compare.
- If you need a documented counter range, the Tissot lists 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The Seiko listing consulted does not establish its counter layout.
Neither listing supports a universal “best” claim. The two models solve different problems, and a buyer with a tight budget, a fixed wrist size, or a preference for a particular strap should weigh those factors ahead of any ranking.

TAG Heuer’s Chronograph Calibre 16 User Guide, marked 01.2026, gives a usual full overhaul interval of five to six years for the watches it covers. The same guide says service intervals depend on the particular watch and how it is used. That is manufacturer guidance for one movement family, not a schedule for every mechanical chronograph, and neither the Seiko nor the Tissot listing consulted here states a service interval. Ask the brand’s authorized service centre for the interval on your specific reference.

Before you buy
- Confirm the exact reference. For the Tissot, the reference is T149.459.21.051.00; for the Seiko, SRQ055 in its mechanical Speedtimer form.
- Confirm the movement type on the listing. Both product families include other versions that are not the models named here.
- Check the price, warranty terms and authorized service access in your own region at the time of purchase.
- If you plan to change straps on the Tissot, its 20 mm lug width is the measurement to match. Confirm the strap’s interface and compatibility before buying.
The chronograph is a useful elapsed-time tool on any wrist, and the tachymeter adds a rate reading when you know the distance you are timing. Start with the winding method you want, then compare the fit and the published specifications.
