Meta reportedly explored facial recognition for smart glasses—but it isn’t available

Meta reportedly explored facial recognition for its smart glasses, but current Ray-Ban Meta products do not publicly offer it. Here’s what the reports establish—and what remains unknown.

Meta has reportedly explored facial recognition for its smart glasses, but the reported feature is not publicly available. In February 2026, The New York Times was reported to have described Meta considering a feature called “Name Tag.” In June, WIRED reported finding related, unreleased code in the Meta AI companion app. Meta later disputed the characterization, and Ray-Ban’s current FAQ says its glasses do not use facial-recognition technology. The available evidence points to development work, not a launched feature.

What Meta reportedly planned

A February 2026 report said Meta was considering facial recognition for Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses, potentially for release as soon as 2026. The proposed feature was reportedly called “Name Tag.” It could identify someone seen through the glasses and provide information about that person through Meta AI, according to TechCrunch’s account of the report.

That is a report of a possible plan, not a formal product announcement. “Potentially as soon as 2026” was reported timing, not a confirmed release date.

What the app code reportedly showed

In June 2026, WIRED reported finding unreleased “NameTag” code in the Meta AI companion app used with the glasses. WIRED said the design would compare faces captured by the glasses with biometric data stored on the wearer’s phone, then alert the wearer when it found a match. The code was not enabled for consumers, according to WIRED’s report.

The phone-based detail matters: the reporting does not establish that Meta planned a system that automatically searched a universal database of everyone in public. It suggests a possible comparison against identity data available to the wearer, but does not settle what data a person would need to supply, who could be matched, or how any results would be processed.

What remains unknown

  • Whether matching would happen on the glasses, the phone, in the cloud, or across more than one of those locations.
  • Whether a person would have to opt in or provide a reference image, and whether the system would recognize only enrolled people or also strangers.
  • Whether results would be limited to a name or could include social profiles, workplaces, or other personal details.
  • What biometric information or match results would be retained, for how long, and who could access them.
  • What accuracy threshold, anti-spoofing measures, or limits for recognizing minors would apply.

Without those details, it is not possible to assess how a finished feature would work or what protections it would provide.

Meta removed code, then disputed the account

After WIRED’s initial report, the publication said Meta removed much of the relevant code from the app. WIRED’s follow-up reported that some fragments remained, including a debug-menu label and a dormant profile link. A Meta spokesperson told WIRED that “the feature does not exist,” disputing the characterization. See WIRED’s follow-up.

Removal of code does not by itself prove that all related work ended, and the reported code does not prove that a consumer feature was ready to ship. The public evidence supports a more limited conclusion: facial-recognition work was reported and related app code was found, while Meta disputes that a feature exists. WIRED separately reported that Meta licensed technology from Rank One Computing for a test version of the Meta AI app; that is evidence of a reported software relationship, not proof that the technology would appear in a consumer product (WIRED).

Is facial recognition available on Ray-Ban Meta glasses now?

As of August 18, 2026, the available sources show no public consumer launch of Name Tag. Ray-Ban’s current FAQ states, “No facial recognition technology is used.” It distinguishes identity recognition from visual AI functions such as identifying objects, landmarks, plants, and signs. That is the manufacturer’s published position, not independent verification of every internal data flow. The Ray-Ban Meta FAQ also says AI image-analysis data is not saved in Meta AI conversation history and that data is used to provide requested features and, in protected form, improve products.

Face detection, visual description, and facial recognition are not interchangeable. Face detection finds that a face is present; image analysis can describe visible content; facial recognition attempts to match a face to an identity using a reference image, template, or database. A camera-based AI description is not, on its own, evidence that the glasses identify who someone is.

Why identification through ordinary-looking glasses raises concerns

A camera can record people who may not notice it. Linking a captured face to an identity adds a different risk: someone could be identified without knowing a search took place. Potential harms include stalking or harassment, false accusations, and exposure of sensitive associations—such as a visit to a clinic, workplace, place of worship, or protest. A mistaken match could also lead to confrontation or physical danger.

Errors are not a minor edge case. Lighting, masks, sunglasses, occlusion, or a change in appearance can interfere with matching; people with similar features may be confused. A false match at work, school, or in public could be treated as certainty by a wearer even when the system is wrong. A stolen or compromised phone could create another route to identity data if the phone were part of the system.

There are possible benefits, too. Consensual recognition—such as helping a blind or low-vision user recognize an acquaintance who knowingly enrolled—could support accessibility or help someone with memory impairment. That use differs materially from identifying an unwilling stranger. An accessibility benefit does not resolve the consent and safety questions for bystanders.

What current privacy safeguards do—and do not—tell bystanders

Ray-Ban says its glasses use a recording-indicator LED when photos, videos, or livestreams are captured. Its FAQ also says some camera-based AI functions may operate without the LED because they are not treated as shareable content, and that certain functions may remove identifiable details such as license plates or phone numbers. These published safeguards describe current product behavior; they do not establish how a future biometric search would be signaled. A light intended to indicate recording may not tell someone that their face is being matched.

If Meta ever announced such a feature, the practical questions would include whether it gives a visible, audible, or haptic signal; requires consent from recognized people; processes data locally; lets users delete identity data; and keeps an audit log of searches. Restrictions in schools, workplaces, hospitals, protests, or government buildings would also matter, as would a way for people to request exclusion from any recognition database.

The policy debate is not a legal ruling

Biometric privacy rules differ by jurisdiction and by context. Laws may regulate collection, retention, disclosure, or sale separately, and consent requirements can vary. Rules for consumer use may differ from those governing employment, schools, law enforcement, or public spaces; availability might also differ between countries. These are reasons a product could be restricted or redesigned in some markets, not grounds for a blanket claim that the reported feature is legal or illegal.

On March 17, 2026, Senator Ed Markey sent Meta a letter asking about biometric data, model training, privacy assessments, law-enforcement access, and the prospect of identifying people without their knowledge. The letter records lawmakers’ questions; it is not a legal finding (Markey’s letter). Privacy and civil-liberties groups also urged Meta not to deploy facial recognition on Ray-Ban and Oakley glasses in a coalition letter.

How this differs from Facebook’s old face-tagging system

Meta shut down Facebook’s facial-recognition system for photo tagging in 2021 after years of privacy and legal criticism. Contemporary coverage framed the smart-glasses proposal as a reconsideration of that retreat (Engadget). The systems should not be treated as technically identical: Facebook’s system involved uploaded social-media photos, while the reported glasses concept would involve a wearable camera and AI assistant in physical settings.

What current owners and prospective buyers should know

Ray-Ban’s product information says its glasses require a compatible smartphone, the Meta AI app, a Meta account, wireless internet, and a supported operating system; feature availability can vary by region. See the official product information.

  • Owners should not assume facial recognition is active, and there is no publicly documented universal facial-recognition switch for a feature that is not publicly available.
  • Keep the companion app and glasses software updated, and review the current privacy and AI settings rather than relying on assumptions about future controls.
  • Treat camera-equipped glasses as recording-capable devices, follow venue rules, and respect other people’s privacy. Schools and employers may restrict them whether or not facial recognition is enabled.
  • Do not buy the glasses based on rumored Name Tag functionality; no consumer release has been confirmed in the cited reporting.

Meta previously operated facial recognition for Facebook photo tagging and shut it down in 2021. The reported glasses work would differ in context: a wearable camera and assistant operating in physical spaces rather than matching uploaded social-media photos.
