The model names alone do not establish an individual watch’s year, originality or condition, so verify the reference and components before buying.
1960s Breitling models at a glance
| Family | Why it stands out | Decade marker | What to prioritize when buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navitimer / Cosmonaute | Aviation and space history | Breitling records Scott Carpenter wearing a specially made 24-hour Navitimer on 24 May 1962; the model became commercially known as the Cosmonaute. | Exact reference, 12-hour versus 24-hour dial, movement, and originality of the dial, hands and slide-rule bezel. |
| Top Time | Expressive 1960s styling | Introduced in 1964 for “young and active professionals,” in Breitling’s description. | Case and dial originality, plus whether the proportions and condition suit your preferences. |
| SuperOcean | Diving and water-sports heritage | A diving-oriented family represented in Breitling’s 1960s history; Sotheby’s also describes it as a diving watch. | Case reference, bezel, corrosion, dial condition, service records and any available depth-rating documentation. |
| Chrono-matic | Automatic-chronograph history | Debuted in 1969 after joint development by Breitling, Dubois-Depraz, Heuer-Leonidas and Hamilton Buren. | Correct movement and case layout, including the left-side crown and right-side pushers. |
These dates are historical markers, not proof that a particular listing is from the stated year. The available histories do not provide a complete production census for every reference, so establish the individual watch’s identity from its reference, movement and configuration.
Navitimer and Cosmonaute: for aviation and space history
The Navitimer is Breitling’s cockpit-instrument chronograph family. The Cosmonaute is the choice for the distinctive 24-hour display and its connection to Scott Carpenter’s 1962 orbital mission. Before comparing examples, confirm whether the watch is a 12-hour Navitimer or a 24-hour Cosmonaute; a seller’s model label is not enough to establish that distinction.
- Ask for clear, well-lit photographs of the dial, hands and slide-rule bezel. Look for signs of replacement or restoration and compare the configuration with the claimed reference.
- Request movement photographs and have the movement identity checked against the claimed model and period.
- Ask which parts are original and which, if any, were replaced during service. A documented service replacement is different from an undisclosed alteration, but either affects what you are buying.
Top Time: for graphic design and unusual cases
Introduced in 1964, Top Time reflects a less instrument-led design direction. Breitling’s stated target was “young and active professionals”; the family is associated with cushion-shaped cases and graphic dials. It is a strong candidate if those proportions and dial designs matter more to you than the Navitimer’s cockpit-style functionality.
#1 Best Overall
Inspect the case shape and dial closely in photographs, and ask whether either has been refinished or replaced. For a vintage watch, a polished case or a service dial may still be wearable, but it should be disclosed and priced as the specific watch it is—not treated as interchangeable with an untouched example.
SuperOcean: for diving heritage
SuperOcean is Breitling’s sea-oriented option. Breitling’s history presents the family in the context of underwater exploration and water sports, while Sotheby’s identifies it as a diving watch. That history does not by itself establish that a decades-old example remains suitable for use in water.

- Blue Dial with Index Hour Markers
- Breitling Caliber B20
- Self-winding Automatic Movement, COSC Chronometer Certified
- 200 Meters / 660 Feet Water-Resistant
Check the reference and bezel configuration, then look for corrosion and damage around the case and dial. Ask for service documentation and for any available evidence supporting the watch’s depth rating. Unless its current water resistance has been professionally tested and confirmed, treat it as a collectible rather than relying on it for swimming or diving.
Chrono-matic: for the late-decade automatic chronograph
The Chrono-matic debuted in 1969 as a joint development involving Breitling, Dubois-Depraz, Heuer-Leonidas and Hamilton Buren. Its readily visible layout has the crown on the left and chronograph pushers on the right, making it a natural choice for a collector interested in the period’s automatic-chronograph development.

Confirm the movement and case reference rather than relying on the layout alone. Request movement and caseback photographs, and check that the claimed model’s components and configuration agree with the seller’s description.
How to check a specific watch before buying
- Request the evidence. Ask for sharp photographs of the dial, caseback, movement and reference markings. If the seller cannot provide a movement image, ask whether an independent watchmaker can inspect it.
- Verify the claimed identity. Compare the reference, movement, dial layout and case design with one another. A listing title or a model name does not establish the production year.
- Separate original parts from later work. Ask about replacement dials, hands, bezels and other service components, as well as refinishing or restoration. Seek clear descriptions rather than relying on terms such as “all original” without supporting detail.
- Review service and provenance records. Request available service documentation and any paperwork supporting ownership history. Treat undocumented claims as unverified.
- Assess condition in context. Consider whether wear, corrosion, replaced parts or restoration are acceptable to you, and whether the seller has documented them. For a SuperOcean intended for water use, obtain a current professional water-resistance assessment.
- Compare the exact watch, not just the model name. No authoritative current price table or complete production total is established by the historical sources cited here. Asking prices are listing-specific; compare watches with matching references, condition, originality and documentation rather than treating one listing as a market benchmark.
Which 1960s Breitling should you choose?
Make the choice around the trait you most want to own: the Navitimer or Cosmonaute for aviation and space associations, the Top Time for its design language, the SuperOcean for diving heritage, or the Chrono-matic for its automatic-chronograph milestone. Once you have a candidate, let the evidence for that individual watch—especially its reference, movement, condition and service history—decide whether it is the right example.
