Rivian’s Apple Watch app brings vehicle controls to your wrist, including locking and unlocking, climate adjustment, window venting, the alarm, and charging targets. But the app is not the same thing as a passive Apple Wallet car key: Rivian’s clearest hands-free, phone-free entry is for compatible Gen 2 vehicles with Digital Key set up.
What the Rivian Apple Watch app does
Rivian announced its Apple Watch companion app on February 19, 2026. It works alongside the Rivian iPhone app and offers vehicle status and controls from the watch. Rivian lists the following actions: lock or unlock the doors, vent the windows, sound the alarm, adjust cabin temperature, and set a target state of charge. The Digital Crown can be used to adjust settings such as temperature or the charge target.
You can also choose up to four quick controls for easier access. The watch app is useful for commands and status at a glance; whether it can also act as a passive key depends on the vehicle and Wallet setup.
Apple Watch app vs. Apple Wallet Digital Key
These are related but distinct features. The Rivian app provides controls. Digital Key is a vehicle key provisioned in Apple Wallet, designed to allow access without opening the Rivian app on supported Gen 2 vehicles.

Rivian says Gen 1 drivers can tap the watch app’s lock icon to lock or unlock, and that the app must be open before they are ready to drive. That is not the same promise as passive approach-to-unlock. For Gen 2, Rivian describes Digital Key as allowing the vehicle to unlock as the driver approaches, with a compatible Apple Watch usable in place of the iPhone once configured. Compatibility and software requirements
The requirements differ by feature. Rivian’s App Store listing associates the Apple Watch app with vehicle software version 2026.03. Rivian’s Digital Key announcement lists iPhone XS or later and Apple Watch Series 6 or later as supported at launch. Treat that watch and phone list as Rivian’s stated Digital Key compatibility, not a blanket guarantee for every watch-app function or future watchOS version.

The 2025.46 and app 3.8.0 figures describe the original Digital Key rollout, not the Apple Watch app requirement. Before buying a watch or relying on the feature, check the current Rivian app listing and support information for requirements applicable to your vehicle and software.
How to set up the watch and, on Gen 2, Digital Key
Rivian’s public announcements establish the prerequisites and general behavior, but do not provide a complete current, screen-by-screen setup path. Menu names may change with app revisions. Use the prompts in the current Rivian app rather than relying on a specific menu label.

- Update the vehicle to software 2026.03 or later for the Apple Watch app, and update the Rivian iPhone app.
- Install or enable the Rivian companion app on the Apple Watch through the iPhone’s Watch app.
- Sign in with the Rivian account associated with the vehicle, select the right vehicle if the account includes more than one, and follow the Rivian app’s watch setup prompts.
- For a Gen 2 Digital Key, add the Rivian key to Apple Wallet on the iPhone and complete the watch provisioning prompts. Check that passive entry is enabled, then test it while keeping another access method available.
- For Gen 1, open the Rivian app on the watch and use its lock control. Rivian says the app must be open before you are ready to drive; do not assume a successful unlock command alone proves the watch is a complete drive key.
What powers Digital Key—and what it means in practice
Rivian says Digital Key uses the Car Connectivity Consortium standard. Its Gen 2 key experience also uses ultra-wideband for proximity-based access, while NFC offers an additional close-range access method through the reader on the driver-side door handle. These technologies do not make every Apple Watch compatible by themselves: vehicle generation, software, device support, and successful Wallet provisioning all matter. Rivian’s descriptions are in its Digital Key announcement and Gen 2 R1 overview.
Local Wallet access and remote app commands are also different use cases. A Wallet key is intended to provide nearby vehicle access; commands such as climate changes and vehicle status use the Rivian app experience and can depend on connectivity and vehicle availability. The watch therefore replaces an iPhone only for supported access scenarios—not every remote function in every circumstance.

If the watch will not unlock or start the Rivian
- Check the vehicle software first. The App Store listing associates the watch app with 2026.03. An installed watch app does not by itself confirm that the vehicle has the required software.
- Confirm which feature you are using. App controls and a Wallet Digital Key are separate. Seeing the key on the iPhone does not establish that it has also been provisioned to the watch.
- Check the vehicle generation. Rivian describes passive Digital Key entry for Gen 2; do not expect the same behavior from Gen 1 based on the watch app alone.
- For Gen 1, open the watch app. Rivian says the app should be open before the driver is ready to drive. Locking or unlocking successfully is not proof that the watch will authorize driving by itself.
- For Gen 2, review Wallet provisioning. Confirm the watch meets Rivian’s stated Series 6-or-later Digital Key baseline, is associated with the relevant Apple account, and has the key for the correct vehicle. If the key remains unavailable, follow current Rivian support guidance rather than deleting or re-adding keys without a backup access method.
- Keep a backup while testing. Rivian describes NFC as another access path for Digital Key, but carry and test a physical key card or other approved backup before relying on a newly configured watch.
Sharing, security, and backup access
Rivian says a vehicle can have up to eight Digital Keys, which can be shared with family or friends. That is key sharing, not a reason to share a Rivian account password. Rivian also says the key is stored in the device’s operating-system-controlled wallet and protected by device security features. These details describe the design, not an absolute guarantee against loss or access problems; retain a physical backup and use Rivian’s current process if a device is lost.
For owners without an Apple Watch, the iPhone Rivian app remains an option, and compatible Gen 2 owners can use Wallet on the iPhone. Rivian also lists supported Google Pixel and Samsung devices for Digital Key, but the exact Android model list can change; check Rivian’s current support information before depending on a particular phone.
