The Information reported in February that Meta was targeting a smartwatch release this year, while a Reuters summary described the reported project—possibly codenamed “Malibu 2”—as focused on health tracking and Meta AI. Meta has not published a final name, release date, price, specifications, or compatibility details.
That makes this a reported product plan rather than a confirmed retail device. It could become an important rival to Apple Watch, especially if Meta connects it to its AI glasses and supports both Android and iPhone. But those are still unanswered questions.

What is actually confirmed about Meta’s 2026 smartwatch?
The strongest available evidence is a February 2026 report from The Information, which cited two people familiar with the project and said Meta had revived its smartwatch effort with a 2026 launch target.
A Reuters summary described the reported device as “Malibu 2” and said it could include health tracking and a built-in Meta AI assistant. Those details are attributed reporting, not specifications confirmed by Meta.

As of the latest information available for this report, Meta has not announced:
- the watch’s final name;
- an exact release date or launch region;
- the operating system or app platform;
- iPhone or Android compatibility;
- the sensor list, battery life, or cellular options;
- the price or subscription structure; or
- retail availability.
Therefore, “coming in 2026” currently means a reported target, not a guaranteed launch.
Meta’s earlier smartwatch project was canceled
This is not Meta’s first attempt at a watch. The company previously worked on camera-equipped smartwatch concepts, reportedly involving more than one model. That project was canceled before Meta brought a smartwatch to market, according to historical coverage from MacRumors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe earlier effort should not be confused with the reported Malibu 2 project:
- Earlier project: reportedly centered on unusual camera-equipped watch designs.
- Revived project: reportedly emphasizes health tracking and Meta AI.
- Still unknown: whether any camera, display, or experimental input hardware from the old work survives.
Meta has not already launched a smartwatch. Its current wrist-related product, the Meta Neural Band, is an EMG wristband bundled with Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses—not a conventional smartwatch and not confirmation of Malibu 2.
Why Meta may be returning to the wrist
Meta’s wearable strategy has increasingly focused on AI glasses. Its Ray-Ban and Oakley partnerships put cameras, microphones, speakers, and voice-based AI into eyewear. A watch could extend that system rather than simply copy Apple’s formula.

Meta says its Neural Band uses electromyography, or EMG, to interpret muscle activity as gesture commands for Meta Ray-Ban Display. The glasses-and-band product starts at $799 in the United States. That existing technology creates a plausible strategic role for a future watch:
- collecting health and activity data;
- providing wrist-based controls for Meta glasses;
- showing notifications and messages;
- giving Meta AI additional biometric context; or
- offering a standalone wearable for people who do not want glasses.
These are reasonable strategic possibilities, not confirmed Malibu 2 features. Meta’s broader glasses activity is documented in its official wearable announcements.
What the Meta watch might do
| Reported | Plausible but unverified | Unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Health tracking | Control for Meta glasses | Price |
| Meta AI | Sleep or stress tracking | Battery life |
| A 2026 launch target | WhatsApp, Messenger, or Instagram notifications | Cellular connectivity |
| The “Malibu 2” codename | Android and iPhone support | Sensors and operating system |
| Voice, touch, or gesture controls | Final name and launch regions |
Health tracking and Meta AI are the only feature claims strongly tied to the current reporting. Heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking, recovery metrics, voice interaction, cellular service, an independent display, and glasses control all remain possible rather than established.
There is no reliable evidence yet for ECG, blood oxygen, temperature, glucose, blood-pressure monitoring, medical certification, waterproofing, a camera, or any particular battery rating. “Health tracking” should not be interpreted as diagnosis or medical validation.
Meta smartwatch vs Apple Watch
Whether Meta can “challenge Apple Watch” depends on what kind of competition is meant. Apple has a mature product platform; Meta may be pursuing a different combination of AI, glasses, and wrist controls.
Phone compatibility
Apple Watch is tightly integrated with the iPhone. Apple says its current models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. The current U.S. lineup is the Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 3.

- 【7-in-1 Charging Hub】Designed for travelers and dorm dwellers, this power strip transforms a single wall outlet into a versatile charging station with 4 AC outlets (2 three-prong + 2 two-prong) and 3 USB ports (2 USB-A + 1 USB-C). The strategically spaced outlets prevent bulky adapters from blocking each other, while the USB-C port delivers 5V/2.4A fast charging for modern devices like iOS Phones, Android phones. USB-A ports support 5V/2.4A for tablets, e-readers, or smartwatches
- 【Cruise & Airline Approved】Unlike standard power strips banned on cruises, this model excludes surge protection to meet strict maritime and airline safety regulations. This power strip’s FCC certification and fire-resistant PC shell ensure compliance while protecting against short circuits, over-voltage, and over-current. The 4-foot extension cord is a game-changer for cabins with distant outlets
- 【Ultra-Thin Flat Plug & Space-Saving Design】Engineered for tight spaces, the 45° right-angle flat plug (just 0.4 inches thick) nestles flush against walls, avoiding protrusion that blocks adjacent outlets—ideal behind TVs, sofas, or cramped dorm furniture. The 5-foot cord wraps around the strip’s body using built-in side snaps, creating 8-ounce bundle that slips into carry-ons or backpacks
- 【Smart USB Charging Tech】Equipped with adaptive charging intelligence, the USB-C port auto-detects connected devices to deliver up to 15W output (5V/3.1A), rapidly powering USB-C laptops, iPads, or Android phones. The USB-A ports dynamically adjust between 5V/2.4A~1A to safely charge Kindles, or older Phones
- 【Safety First】Prioritizing user safety, the power strip features a V0-grade fire-resistant casing tested to withstand 750°C, paired with pure copper wiring for efficient heat dissipation. Advanced safeguards include over-current protection, over-voltage protection (up to 250V), and short-circuit prevention. The non-slip rubber base keeps it stable on slick surfaces, while the child-safe outlet covers protect curious fingers
Meta’s phone requirements are unknown. Cross-platform support would be one of its biggest opportunities, particularly among Android users. But until Meta confirms iPhone and Android compatibility, it is impossible to call the watch a universal alternative to Apple Watch.
Health and fitness
Apple already offers a substantial baseline of workout, health, sleep, safety, and emergency features. Depending on model and region, Apple Watch also supports ECG and hypertension notifications. Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility information covers Series 6 and later, second-generation SE and later, and all Ultra models when paired with a compatible iPhone.
Meta’s reported health focus could make it a serious competitor, but there is no evidence yet that its sensors, accuracy, medical features, or safety tools will match Apple’s.

AI
AI is the area where Meta could differentiate most clearly. Meta already markets AI features across its glasses, including voice interaction, translation, notifications, and navigation on its display-equipped model. A watch could make that assistant accessible through a wrist microphone, speaker, screen, button, or gesture.
However, useful AI requires more than adding a chatbot. Important questions include whether the assistant works without a phone, how quickly it responds, whether it works offline, whether health-related answers are constrained appropriately, and whether advanced functions require a subscription.
Apps and communications
Apple Watch benefits from a mature watchOS ecosystem and deep iPhone integration. A Meta device could instead prioritize WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Meta AI, and interaction with Meta glasses. That could be valuable to Meta users, but it would not automatically provide the breadth or maturity of Apple’s app platform.

Price
Meta could try to undercut Apple, but no credible Meta-watch price has been reported. Apple’s January 2026 newsroom article listed the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, Series 11 from $399, and Ultra 3 from $799 in the United States. Apple’s online store later showed Ultra 3 from $700, so live pricing should be checked before buying.

Battery, cellular service, and privacy
Meta has not disclosed battery life, charging requirements, cellular options, or data policies for the reported watch. These details may matter more than AI branding. A device combining a display, health sensors, wireless radios, and frequent AI interactions could face difficult battery trade-offs.
Health and behavioral data also deserve scrutiny. Before buying, readers should look for clear answers about:
- what data is collected and whether it is processed on the device or in the cloud;
- whether a Meta account is required;
- how data can be exported or deleted;
- whether health data is used for advertising or AI training;
- how long data is retained; and
- whether health features differ by country.
These are legitimate buyer questions, not evidence that Meta will misuse health data.

Is Meta building an Apple Watch rival—or a new category?
The most important strategic question is whether Malibu 2 would be a conventional smartwatch or a wrist-based AI interface for Meta’s glasses.
Best Value

- Anti Blue Light Filter can cut most of the harmful blue light.Reduce eyestrain,headache and effectively prevent myopia.
- 4H Hardness can effectively resist daily scratches.

- Dust-free,bubble free,one-push super easily installation.
A conventional Apple Watch rival would need to compete on notifications, apps, fitness, health, safety, battery life, cellular connectivity, and phone integration. A glasses-focused Meta device might instead prioritize gesture control, AI prompts, biometric context, and messaging. In that case, it could compete with Apple Watch in some use cases without matching it feature for feature.
A 9to5Mac analysis made this distinction, arguing that Meta’s central wearable ambition may remain glasses and AI rather than an independent watch platform. That interpretation is unverified, but it highlights why the watch-shaped design alone does not define the competitive category.
The biggest unanswered questions
- Will it work with iPhone? Apple users cannot assume compatibility.
- Will it work with Android? Cross-platform support could be Meta’s biggest opening.
- Is it standalone? It may be a full watch, a glasses controller, or both.
- What sensors will it use? “Health tracking” is too broad to identify specific capabilities.
- Will AI require a subscription? Meta has not announced a pricing model.
- How long will the battery last? No reliable estimate is available.
- What data will Meta collect? The privacy policy will be essential reading.
- When and where will it launch? The 2026 target could slip or change by market.
- How much will it cost? No official price exists.
- What happens if the project is delayed? Meta previously canceled a smartwatch effort, so launch risk is real.
Should you buy an Apple Watch now or wait?
Buy an Apple Watch now if:
- you own an iPhone and need a working smartwatch immediately;
- health, fitness, safety, cellular service, or established apps matter more than experimental AI;
- you want documented pricing, compatibility, support, and hardware; or
- you need a mature product rather than a reported project.
The current Apple choices include the SE 3 for lower-cost basics, Series 11 for mainstream use, and Ultra 3 for rugged and endurance-focused buyers. Check Apple’s live buying page for current pricing.
Wait for Meta if:
- Meta AI, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, or Meta glasses are central to your daily use;
- you use Android or strongly prefer a cross-platform wearable;
- you are specifically interested in glasses control or wrist-based AI interaction; and
- you can tolerate uncertain timing, price, compatibility, and features.
Do not wait solely because of the headline if:
- you expect a confirmed September launch or a specific release date;
- you require medical-grade health functions;
- you need guaranteed iPhone support;
- you need known battery life, cellular connectivity, or a broad app ecosystem; or
- you are not comfortable evaluating Meta’s eventual health-data and account policies.
Readers who want Meta’s current AI-wearable experience can consider Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses, or Meta Ray-Ban Display with Neural Band. These are separate products, not substitutes for the rumored smartwatch and not evidence that the watch has launched.
Verdict
Meta’s 2026 smartwatch is a credible reported project, not an officially announced product. Its strongest opportunity is not merely copying Apple Watch. Meta could combine health tracking and notifications with Meta AI, smart-glasses control, and a broader wearable network.
That strategy could make the device compelling—particularly for Android users and Meta’s glasses customers. But Apple Watch remains the safer choice for anyone who needs a known, mature product today. Until Meta confirms the watch’s platform, sensors, battery, price, privacy terms, and launch markets, “challenge Apple Watch” should be read as a strategic ambition rather than a proven technical claim.
