Meta’s battery claim was mostly true—but only against the original Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. When Oakley Meta HSTN launched in June 2025, Meta rated it for up to eight hours of typical use, compared with up to four hours for Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1. Independent testing also found Oakley lasted longer, particularly while recording 1080p video.
But “twice the battery life” never meant twice the endurance for every task. And as of August 18, 2026, the comparison needs an important correction: Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is also rated for up to eight hours and supports 3K video.

The short answer
Oakley Meta HSTN was a genuine battery upgrade over Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1, but the advantage was smaller in real-world use than Meta’s headline “double the battery” comparison suggested.

- Against Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1: Meta’s claim was directionally correct, and independent tests showed a meaningful advantage.
- For continuous recording: Oakley lasted longer, but not twice as long in every resolution or test.
- Against Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: there is no longer an advertised battery advantage; both models claim up to eight hours of moderate or typical use.
The available head-to-head test compared Oakley HSTN with the original Ray-Ban Meta, not Gen 2. It therefore cannot establish that Oakley has better battery life than the current Ray-Ban model.

What Meta actually claimed
Meta announced Oakley Meta HSTN on June 20, 2025. According to Meta’s announcement and Oakley’s product information, HSTN is rated for:
- Up to eight hours of typical use
- Up to 19 hours on standby
- Up to five hours of continuous audio playback or voice calling
- Up to 48 additional hours from the charging case
- Up to 50% charge in 20 minutes
The original Ray-Ban Meta, now best identified as Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1, was rated for up to four hours of moderate use. Ray-Ban’s FAQ listed approximately three hours with continuous audio streaming and voice assistance.
That is the basis for the “twice the battery life” statement: eight hours versus four hours under manufacturer-defined typical or moderate-use conditions. It is not a claim that Oakley can record, livestream, or play audio continuously for eight hours.
What independent testing found
Android Central’s direct testing found that Oakley HSTN did last longer than the original Ray-Ban Meta, although the size of the advantage depended heavily on the task.

Continuous video recording

At 1080p, Oakley’s 50-minute result was approximately 67% longer than the original Ray-Ban’s 30 minutes. That is a substantial improvement, but it is not a two-times result.
More importantly, Oakley’s endurance fell to 35 minutes when recording in 3K. The higher-resolution mode reduced the apparent advantage to roughly 17% in this comparison. Anyone buying HSTN primarily for its 3K camera should not assume that the eight-hour headline rating translates into dramatically longer high-resolution recording.
Typical camera use
In paired real-world tests, both glasses generally delivered around three to four hours of active use. Oakley was sometimes about an hour ahead, but neither pair consistently reached its manufacturer’s maximum estimate under heavier use.

- After three hours, Ray-Ban showed 75% remaining and Oakley 77%.
- After three and a half hours, Ray-Ban showed 15% and Oakley 36%.
- In another test, Ray-Ban reached zero after one hour and 15 minutes while Oakley still showed 38%.
These figures are useful indications rather than a universal battery benchmark. The runs were not a formal laboratory standard, and video settings differed in some tests.

Livestreaming
Oakley lasted approximately 48 minutes while livestreaming, compared with about 39 minutes for the original Ray-Ban Meta. That nine-minute improvement is meaningful for a demanding workload, but it is clearly not a doubling.
Audio playback
Meta’s stated figures were approximately four hours for the original Ray-Ban Meta and five hours for Oakley HSTN. In testing, the reviewer estimated roughly three hours for Ray-Ban and four hours for Oakley under the tested conditions.
Audio therefore showed a real but smaller improvement than the headline typical-use comparison.
Why eight hours does not mean eight hours of recording
Manufacturers calculate battery ratings using defined workloads. Those workloads typically combine some mixture of audio, voice assistance, camera use, connectivity, and idle time. Continuous video recording is much more demanding because the camera, processor, storage, wireless connection, and display indicators may all remain active.

Actual runtime can change with:
- Video resolution and recording length
- Livestreaming and wireless connectivity
- Music volume and continuous playback
- Voice assistance and “Hey Meta” wake-word detection
- Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, phone synchronization, and media importing
- Temperature, location, and wireless interference
- Battery age, charge condition, software version, and settings
Oakley explicitly says that actual battery life varies with use, configuration, settings, temperature, location, connectivity, and interference. Ray-Ban gives similar warnings for Gen 2. Disabling the wake word may improve endurance in some circumstances, but it also removes a convenient hands-free activation method.

The original four-hour Ray-Ban figure remains relevant only when discussing Gen 1. It should not be presented as the specification for every Ray-Ban Meta product.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is rated for:
- Up to eight hours of moderate use
- Up to five hours of continuous audio streaming and voice assistance
- Approximately 19 hours of standby, according to Ray-Ban’s comparison information
- 3K Ultra HD video
In other words, Oakley HSTN and Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 now share the same headline battery rating and both offer 3K video. The 2025 independent test does not prove Oakley is better than Gen 2 because Gen 2 was not part of that test.

For reference, a U.S. Ray-Ban product page listed a Gen 2 Headliner configuration at $379, while other frame and lens configurations were higher. Prices vary by frame, lens type, prescription, region, and promotions, so these should not be treated as permanent list prices.
What the battery cases do—and do not—solve
Oakley’s case is rated to provide up to 48 additional hours, but that is total extra charge rather than uninterrupted wearable runtime. The glasses must be returned to the case, which stops recording and listening while they recharge.
Battery degradation is another practical limitation. Like other compact wearable batteries, these glasses will generally provide less runtime as the battery ages and goes through repeated charge cycles. Heat and cold can also affect performance, particularly during outdoor use.
Verdict
Meta’s 2025 claim was mostly true: Oakley Meta HSTN had a better advertised battery life than the original Ray-Ban Meta, and independent testing confirmed a meaningful advantage. But the benefit was workload-dependent. Audio and livestreaming gains were smaller, and Oakley’s 3K recording result was much less impressive than its 1080p result.
The bigger issue in 2026 is model identification. Oakley HSTN is a clear battery upgrade over Ray-Ban Meta Gen 1, but it does not have a headline battery advantage over Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. For today’s buyer, the decision is primarily about frame design, fit, lens options, camera use, and price—not an assumed two-to-one battery difference.
