The Michael Schumacher Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore is a 2012 limited-edition Offshore Chronograph, best identified in titanium as reference 26568IM.OO.A004CA.01. It is a conventional automatic chronograph, not the specialized lap-timing Royal Oak Concept that AP introduced in 2015. Auction catalogues describe the titanium version as a 1,000-piece edition, although AP’s heritage caption gives a conflicting count of 100.
What is the Michael Schumacher Royal Oak Offshore?
It is a special-edition Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph created in connection with Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher. Audemars Piguet appointed Schumacher as a brand ambassador in 2010 and released the Offshore collaboration two years later. The most precisely identified titanium model in the auction records is reference 26568IM.OO.A004CA.01. Phillips describes it as a circa-2012, 44 mm automatic chronograph with date, calibre 3126/3840, a grey AP rubber strap, titanium buckle and cermet bezel. Sotheby’s lists a titanium example numbered 997/1000 and gives its diameter as 44.5 mm, rather than 44 mm. How many were made?
The count depends on which material variant and source is meant. For the titanium reference 26568IM.OO.A004CA.01, Phillips describes a 1,000-piece series, and Sotheby’s catalogue documents one watch as number 997/1000. AP’s heritage account, however, calls the 2012 reference 26568 a 100-piece limited edition. Because that caption conflicts with the auction records and does not clarify the specific variant, the titanium count is best reported as auction-documented at 1,000, with the manufacturer-caption discrepancy noted—not treated as definitively settled. The family also included a pink-gold version. Sotheby’s records a circa-2012, 44 mm pink-gold automatic chronograph numbered 118/500, with a cermet bezel and calibre 2326/2848. Its 500-piece count belongs to that variant, not to the titanium edition. Sotheby’s
What do the stars and dial details mean?
Phillips’ catalogue says the tachymeter scale features seven stars for Schumacher’s seven Formula 1 world titles. Its interpretation assigns blue stars to his Benetton years and red stars to Ferrari. What is the video connected to the watch?
The watch was unveiled internationally on 17 October 2012 at Berlin’s Kraftwerk building. The launch report says AP released the third installment of its Defining Moment Series alongside the limited edition. In the video, Schumacher discusses how he started, his motor-racing career and the defining moment of his career. How is it different from the 2015 Schumacher Laptimer?
The Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher, reference 26221FT, is a separate 2015 model—not another name for the 2012 Offshore Chronograph. AP says Schumacher challenged its engineers in 2010 to create a mechanical watch capable of timing multiple successive laps without restarting the stopwatch. The Laptimer combines a chronograph with flyback function and independently controlled hands for that specialized purpose. The 2012 Offshore is the conventional chronograph in this pairing. What does an auction result say about its value?
Phillips reports one titanium example sold for HK$325,000 against an estimate of HK$200,000–300,000. This is a historical result for a particular auction lot, not a current market valuation, retail price or promise of what another example will sell for.
