Microsoft’s smartwatch-like wrist device was the Microsoft Band, a fitness tracker that combined wrist sensors, GPS, on-device tiles and the Microsoft Health phone app. Its sensors collected different kinds of information—such as heart rate, movement and ultraviolet exposure—while the display showed selected metrics and alerts. These are historical features documented in Microsoft’s 2014–2015 materials, not a guide to a current Microsoft smartwatch.

How the Microsoft Band worked

The Band gathered readings from sensors on the wrist, presented selected information on its display and synchronized data with Microsoft Health. The companion app was used to select tiles and work with synchronized activity information. Microsoft’s hands-on description listed day, distance, calories, heart rate and steps among the display indicators, alongside tiles for workouts and notifications such as messages and calendar events. Microsoft’s 2014 introduction to the Band and its closer look at the hardware describe those functions.

What the original Microsoft Band’s sensors tracked

The original Band’s sensors served different purposes; no single sensor measured overall fitness. Microsoft described the following functions:

  • Optical heart-rate monitor: Recorded heart-rate information at the wrist.
  • Accelerometer: Detected movement, including steps. Microsoft said motion data could be combined with heart rate and profile information to help estimate calorie burn.
  • GPS: The Run tile could record location and distance for a route map in Microsoft Health. Microsoft said the phone did not need to be carried during exercise tracking; the route information could sync afterward.
  • Galvanic skin response (GSR): Used two contact points to help determine whether the Band was being worn.
  • Ultraviolet (UV) sensor: Provided a snapshot of ultraviolet levels.
  • Ambient-light sensor: Could adjust display brightness.

What changed with Microsoft Band 2

Band 2 retained activity and sleep tracking and added a barometer as its eleventh sensor. Microsoft said the barometer measured elevation gain and loss, and also advertised VO2 max tracking as a fitness indicator. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent proof of medical or measurement accuracy. In its 2015 Band 2 announcement, Microsoft stated: “The Microsoft Band now features an eleventh sensor, a barometer, to measure elevation gain and loss with even more precision.”

Generation Documented features What the distinction means
Original Microsoft Band Optical heart rate, movement and steps, GPS route tracking, GSR wear detection, UV readings and ambient-light-based display adjustment These are features described for the original Band; do not assume it included Band 2’s barometer or advertised VO2 max tracking.
Microsoft Band 2 Retained activity and sleep tracking; added a barometer for elevation gain and loss; Microsoft also advertised VO2 max tracking The barometer and those Band 2 feature claims belong to the later generation.

What the archived SDK says about readings

Microsoft’s archived SDK documentation exposed readings such as accelerometer and gyroscope data, distance, speed, pace, heart rate, pedometer steps, skin temperature, UV, device contact state and calories. It defines some values and units, but includes an important limitation: the documented heart-rate data was intended for resting mode only. That SDK guidance does not support treating those exposed values as validated workout heart-rate readings. See Microsoft’s archived Band SDK article.

Historical phone requirements are not current compatibility guidance

Microsoft’s 2015 overview listed launch-era requirements for the newer Band: Windows Phone 8.1 Update or later; iPhone 5 or later with iOS 8.1.2 or later; or Android 4.4 or later, together with Bluetooth and the Microsoft Health app. These requirements describe the period’s product materials; they do not establish whether a Band can pair with a current phone or whether Microsoft Health services remain available. Microsoft’s 2015 overview is the source for those historical requirements.
