A watch mainplate—also called a base plate—is the structural foundation of a movement. The movement’s components are mounted on it, while bridges work with it to support and hold those parts in position.
What is a watch mainplate?
The mainplate is the central plate on which a watch movement is assembled. Patek Philippe defines the base plate as the central movement plate on which components are assembled, and Seiko Service Center describes it as the plate on which movement parts are mounted. “Mainplate” and “base plate” refer to this foundation of the movement. It is an internal component, not an exterior watch part.
How does the mainplate hold a movement together?
The plate provides the movement’s structural base and mounting points. Bridges are attached to it, typically with screws, and help support and locate wheels, pinions, pivots and other small components. TAG Heuer’s account of making Calibre Heuer 02 calls the machined plate the movement’s chassis; Hodinkee also describes the mainplate and bridges as the parts that hold movement components together. Which side of the movement is the mainplate on?
The mainplate has two oriented sides. Patek Philippe describes its upper side as facing the case back and receiving movement components, while its underside faces the dial. This orientation helps explain its role: it is the movement’s internal foundation, rather than a plate visible on the outside of the watch. Patek Philippe glossary.
What are mainplates made of, and how are they manufactured?
Materials depend on the movement. Patek Philippe lists brass or nickel silver for base plates; TAG Heuer describes a brass mainplate in its account of producing Calibre Heuer 02. These are examples, not a complete list of materials used across watchmaking. Patek Philippe glossary; TAG Heuer.

Manufacturing can involve many operations. MIYOTA says its 82 Series mechanical movement example requires more than 50 processes for a single mainplate, and notes that some other mainplates require as many as 70. No. Compatibility has to be established for the particular movement. The sources here do not identify a specific replacement plate or a compatible calibre, so a generic mainplate cannot be assumed to fit.
