A bi-compax watch is usually a chronograph with two sub-dials, also called registers. The term describes the dial layout—not what the registers measure, which movement powers the watch, or whether it is vintage or modern.
What “bi-compax” means
In current watch-enthusiast usage, “bi-compax” generally refers to a chronograph dial with two subsidiary registers. “Two-register chronograph” is another clear way to describe the category; “bi-compax chronograph watch” is a useful search phrase.
Count the registers on the dial, but do not infer their functions from the name. A bi-compax layout does not specify which elapsed-time intervals the registers track. Check the model’s specifications or manual to learn what each one does.
Bi-compax versus tri-compax
In modern generic usage, bi-compax usually means two sub-dials, while tri-compax usually means three. The distinction is about the number of registers, not a guaranteed set of functions or complications. For a particular watch, verify both the dial and the manufacturer’s description.

Why “Compax” has a historical meaning too
The modern shorthand can be confused with Universal Genève’s historical Compax model names. The British Horological Institute notes that “Compax” was a Universal Genève trade name for watches with complications—indications beyond the time of day. Using “compax” as a literal count of sub-dials is a later collector convention, not a precise account of the original naming.
Universal Genève dates its first wrist chronograph with an hour counter to 1936 and the arrival of its Tri-Compax to 1944. The brand describes the Tri-Compax as a full-calendar chronograph with day, date, month, and moon-phase indications. That historical model name therefore points to more than a three-register layout.

How to identify a watch you are comparing
- Count the registers: two is the usual modern bi-compax layout; three is commonly called tri-compax.
- Check what they do: consult the specifications or manual instead of assuming a function from the layout name.
- Separate layout from model name: determine whether “Compax” is being used generically or refers to a Universal Genève model.
- Look for other complications: a historical Universal Genève Tri-Compax, for example, is associated with a full calendar and moon phase as well as chronograph functions.
