A MIL-SHIPS watch traces its name to a 1955 U.S. Navy diver-watch specification, MIL-SHIPS-W-2181. Bulova says it built and tested prototypes for Navy divers, but the watch was never formally issued as a standard Navy item. Modern Bulova watches bearing the MIL-SHIPS name are later products inspired by that history—not the original prototypes.
What is a MIL-SHIPS watch?
MIL-SHIPS-W-2181 was a U.S. Navy specification for a diver’s watch, dated December 5, 1955, in Bulova’s heritage account. The account says the specification was intended for Navy Experimental Diving Unit (NEDU) divers and called for four features:
- Exclusion of water to a specified depth.
- Resistance to water-vapor ingress over a period of months.
- Legibility in darkness.
- An outer rotating ring.
These requirements describe the intended performance of the historical design. They should not be treated as a complete technical specification for today’s Bulova watches carrying the MIL-SHIPS name. Bulova’s account of the specification and prototype program is at Bulova’s MIL-SHIPS heritage feature.
What happened to the original Bulova prototypes?
According to Bulova’s heritage account, it delivered three prototypes to NEDU in May 1957. Further prototypes followed in 1958 for testing by diving units and UDT-21. Bulova also reports a deep-dive test to 392 feet (about 119.5 m). These are company-reported historical details; the sources cited here do not independently verify them against a Navy test report.

Was the Bulova MIL-SHIPS ever issued to the U.S. Navy?
No—not as a formally issued standard item. Bulova says the prototype was evaluated by NEDU between 1957 and 1958 and that prototypes were tested and used by Navy divers. Its U.S. product page states that the watch was never formally issued. Evaluation or field use by divers is not the same as formal adoption and standard issue.

No. Tornek-Rayville identifies the TR-50717 Paradive as an evolution of the separate MIL-W-50717 specification, not MIL-SHIPS-W-2181. Its maker lists a unidirectional 120-click bezel, synthetic sapphire crystal and NE15C movement. It can be compared with modern Bulova MIL-SHIPS models as an adjacent military dive-watch design, but it belongs to a different specification lineage. See Tornek-Rayville’s TR-50717 Paradive page.
