Marathon Watch president Mitchell Wein leads a family business whose roots reach back to 1904, but Marathon Watch itself was founded in 1939. In a September 2024 interview, he discussed the company’s military-oriented history, practical watch design and later projects—including a Jeep collaboration.
Who is Mitchell Wein?
Mitchell Wein is president of Marathon Watch Co. Marathon’s own company history also names his father, Leon Wein, as a former president and Morris Wein as the company’s founder. Watch-industry publication Europa Star describes Mitchell as the company’s third-generation president in its September 2024 profile.
Wein discussed the company and its watches on episode 299 of The Grey NATO, published September 12, 2024. The conversation covered Marathon’s Canadian identity and Swiss manufacturing, its military and government work, tool watches, tritium illumination, a Jeep collaboration and watch straps. When was Marathon Watch founded?
The dates mark two different beginnings. Marathon’s official history says the family’s predecessor business began in 1904 as Weinsturm Watch and was later called Wein Brothers. Morris Wein founded Marathon Watch in 1939. So 1904 marks the start of the family watch business; 1939 is the stated founding year of Marathon Watch.

The company says it has manufactured timing instruments for the Allied Forces since 1941. That is Marathon’s account of its own history, not an independently documented procurement list or a claim that every current watch is supplied to a military customer.
How did military needs shape Marathon’s watches?
A concrete example is the Steel Navigator. In the company’s account, the watch was first released in 1986 and developed with Kelly Air Force Base. Marathon credits chief watchmaker Jean Maurice Huguenin and Leon Wein with the design, which aimed to create an electrically powered pilot’s wristwatch with quartz accuracy that could withstand extreme changes in altitude. The Steel Navigator story shows how a specific aviation requirement could inform a tool watch. It is one example of Marathon’s military-oriented design context, not a complete account of its contracts or a definitive list of watches currently used by armed forces.
What does Marathon make, and what did Wein discuss?
Marathon describes its watches as combining military durability with Swiss engineering and craftsmanship. That is the company’s brand positioning, rather than an independent performance assessment. The Grey NATO conversation also addressed tritium illumination and the company’s military and government supply history, but it does not establish an exhaustive list of present-day models or procurement programs.

Historical model coverage provides a little product context. Hodinkee’s overview describes the 41 mm “Large” group as including the quartz TSAR and automatic GSAR, and the 36 mm MSAR designation as covering quartz and automatic variations, including a white-dial offering. How does Wein describe Canadian watch tastes?
In the interview, Wein said, “You know what? It’s true. We do like tool watches. We are practical people. Canadians are very pragmatic and humble.” This is his personal characterization of Canadian customers, not a survey finding. It sits naturally alongside Marathon’s focus on practical, military-oriented watches, but should not be read as a measured description of all Canadian buyers.
