Mk II Fulcrum 39 Review: A Modern Tool Watch Built on Reputation and Storytelling

The Mk II Fulcrum 39 is a modern 200-meter tool watch with vintage military-dive cues—not a historically issued Rolex MilSub. Its appeal rests on a persuasive design story, considered specifications and Mk II’s enthusiast reputation; its execution wins praise from some reviewers, while others question details such as the finish, lume and price. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much you value that blend of design and brand identity over a documented military history or a lower-cost movement.

What the Fulcrum 39 is—and what its story does not prove

Mk II describes the Fulcrum as the second iteration of the series, following the original release in 2013. The brand’s concept is a tool watch that was not designed specifically for military use but “could have found a place there.” It draws on design elements associated with watches U.S. Special Forces might have encountered in Vietnam or while training alongside UK counterparts. That is a design premise, not evidence that the Fulcrum was issued to troops.

Independent reviewers make the visual connection more specific. Fratello’s Jorg Weppelink identifies the Rolex MilSub as a clear influence on the case, bezel and hands, and suggests the IWC GST Aquatimer may also be a reference. Worn & Wound describes the intended effect as a modern watch pulled from a 1970s archive. These are reviewers’ interpretations of the design; the Fulcrum is a reinterpretation, not a Rolex MilSub or a watch with equivalent issue provenance. Fratello Worn & Wound Watches of Espionage

The narrative is part of the product’s positioning: it gives the watch a setting and a point of view beyond its specification sheet. It should not be mistaken for verified military heritage, nor is there a named survey or audited sales figure establishing how much Mk II’s reputation or marketing affects buyer behavior.

Case, movement and practical specifications

Mk II lists a 39.50 mm bezel diameter, 47.00 mm end-to-end case length, 14.10 mm thickness and 20 mm lug width. The case is bead-blasted 316L stainless steel, with a double-domed sapphire crystal and interior anti-reflective coating. A screw-down crown and 200 m water-resistance rating support its tool-watch intent. The bezel is unidirectional with 120 clicks, and the dial uses Super-LumiNova BGW9. Mk II’s product specifications

Both versions use automatic Japanese movements that can be wound by hand and hacked (the seconds hand stops when setting the time). Mk II says each watch is timed in three positions.

Version Movement Date display
Fulcrum 39 Date Miyota 9015 Yes
Fulcrum 39 No-Date Miyota 90S5 No

The collection also lists 12-hour and 60-minute dive-bezel choices. The latter supports elapsed-time tracking in the familiar dive-watch format; the 12-hour scale can help track a second time zone. Check the specific listing for the configuration being offered, since bezel choice is distinct from the date/no-date movement choice. Mk II’s Fulcrum 39 collection

How it wears and where reviewers disagree

In Fratello’s hands-on review, Weppelink wore the date version for a week and praised its proportions, bracelet, build and wearability. He disliked the date window and bead-blasted finish, so his positive overall judgment was not an endorsement of every design choice. His 2025 review cited a US$995 price and noted that the included magazine places the watch in a fictionalized post-Vietnam setting. Fratello’s review

  • CUSTOMIZED FIT: Gold durable stainless steel bracelet; links can be removed for a customized fit.
  • WATER RESISTANT: Up to 50m (165ft): Wearable for short periods of recreational swimming and showering, but not diving or snorkeling; 5 ATM.

Worn & Wound’s Devin Pennypacker offers a useful counterpoint. In an informal family guessing game, people assigned the watch a perceived value above its asking price; he stressed that impression as unusual, but still called the Fulcrum his least favorite Mk II he had reviewed. He also said it was not a bad watch and recognized that it would appeal to a dedicated audience. That anecdote speaks to one writer’s impression, not to market-wide willingness to pay. Worn & Wound’s review

Watches of Espionage said its coverage was not sponsored and described using the watch on a dive: the author found the dial legible and timed a safety stop with the bezel. The same review identifies practical reservations: clasp extension was limited for many wetsuits, finishing was merely okay in the author’s view, and the lume was good but not great. The writer also questioned the price in light of the Japanese movement. Its report that the initial run sold out quickly is the outlet’s account, not audited sales data. Watches of Espionage’s review

Can you dive with it?

The official 200 m water-resistance rating, screw-down crown and unidirectional bezel make the Fulcrum 39 a dive-capable watch on paper, and Watches of Espionage reports using it on an actual dive. That reviewer found the dial legible and used the bezel to time a safety stop. The report also flags an important fit issue: the clasp’s extension was limited for many wetsuits. If you plan to wear it over exposure gear, check the bracelet’s adjustment range against your needs rather than assuming the rating guarantees a suitable wetsuit fit.

Water resistance is not a substitute for maintaining seals or following the manufacturer’s care guidance. A rating describes the watch’s specification, not a guarantee that an older or damaged watch remains watertight.

Bracelet, straps and day-to-day flexibility

Mk II offers bracelet and black rubber-strap variants and specifies a 20 mm strap width. The maker also specifies quick-release spring bars on the bracelet, making strap changes easier without implying that a separate third-party strap is included. A 20 mm rubber or nylon strap is a sensible category to consider if you want a lighter alternative to the bracelet; confirm the strap’s construction and fit before buying. Mk II’s product page

Does Mk II’s reputation justify the price?

Watches of Espionage traces Mk II’s founding to Bill Yao in 2002 and describes the company’s early roots in aftermarket Seiko parts, calling it one of the original microbrands. That history helps explain why the name can carry weight among enthusiasts, but it does not establish universal industry standing or quantify a reputation premium. Watches of Espionage

The value question is best separated into tangible equipment and less measurable appeal. The Fulcrum offers sapphire, a bead-blasted steel case, a 120-click bezel, 200 m water resistance, BGW9 lume and a Japanese automatic movement. Buyers also pay for Mk II’s design language and the story attached to it. Reviewers’ mixed reactions show why that story cannot settle the value question for everyone: wearability and execution impressed some, while the finish, lume, date-window styling or movement-to-price relationship gave others pause.

When checked in 2026, Mk II’s collection listed regular date and no-date models from $975 and marked the standard listings sold out; an AMPHIBIOUS special edition was listed at $1,195. These are catalog prices and inventory status at that check, not permanent pricing or a guide to resale value. Mk II’s collection

Who should consider the Fulcrum 39?

  • Consider it if you want a compact, vintage-influenced tool watch, value the 200 m rating and bracelet/strap flexibility, and like Mk II’s particular design story.
  • Compare carefully if you need meaningful wetsuit extension, prioritize strong lume or prefer a less stylized date display; reviewer experience identifies these as potential compromises.
  • Look elsewhere if documented military issue history is central to your purchase. The Fulcrum’s military connection is inspiration, not provenance.
  • Check the configuration for date or no-date, bezel scale, and bracelet or strap before purchase; availability can change and the regular catalog listings were sold out when checked.
