What the 2021 selection compares
MONOCHROME presented perpetual calendars as a classic haute horlogerie complication and chose five watches with markedly different ways of displaying the calendar. The details and prices below are those printed in its article on 26 December 2021; they are historical snapshots, not verified current prices or statements about present production or availability. How the five watches differ
A. Lange & Söhne: an off-centred calendar
The Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar adapts the collection’s asymmetric display to fit its calendar indications. MONOCHROME highlighted its automatic movement, described as derived from the Daymatic, and its solid gold dial. Its dark-brown alligator strap completes the warm, formal presentation.
Bvlgari: the ultra-thin approach
At 5.80 mm thick according to MONOCHROME, the Octo Finissimo was described in the 2021 article as the thinnest perpetual calendar wristwatch then made. Its sandblasted titanium construction, bracelet and retrograde displays set it apart from the more traditional layouts in the group. MONOCHROME also reported that it won the GPHG 2021 Aiguille d’Or; that is the award claim as presented in the historical guide.

Glashütte Original: salmon dial and long reserve
The Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Salmon combines a stainless-steel case with a salmon-coloured dial and blue accents. Its listed 100-hour reserve was the longest stated in this selection. The Panorama Date adds a larger date display alongside the weekday, month, leap-year indication and moon phase.
IWC: an all-black Big Pilot
The TOP GUN edition takes the Big Pilot format into an all-black Ceratanium case and bracelet. MONOCHROME described Ceratanium as combining titanium’s lightness and structural integrity with hardness and scratch resistance similar to ceramic. At 46.2 mm in diameter, it is the largest by the listed diameter here, and its calendar includes a four-digit year and moon phase for both hemispheres. The article attributes the calendar mechanism to Kurt Klaus.

Patek Philippe: day, date and month in one line
The Ref. 5236P’s defining feature is its elongated aperture below 12 o’clock, where day, date and month appear side by side. The 950 platinum case and blue-black gradient dial give that unusual display a restrained setting. Its stated power reserve in the article is 38–48 hours.

The prices MONOCHROME printed in December 2021 ran from EUR 20,500 for the Glashütte Original to EUR 113,200 for the Patek Philippe. The figures are the guide’s as-published prices, not current quotes or a like-for-like valuation: materials, complication design and construction differ, and the source does not establish current market value. The article specifies limited production for the Lange 1 and Glashütte Original, and an annual production limit for the IWC; it gives no comparable edition information for the Bvlgari or Patek Philippe.

These five picks are useful as a snapshot of MONOCHROME’s 2021 editorial preferences: a distinctive dial or display layout, a different material proposition, or an unusually thin or technically elaborate case could each define a watch’s appeal. The selection does not provide comparative accuracy tests, service intervals, or evidence of which models remain available today.
