The Montilier Telefoot is a vintage Swiss watch built around an unusual reset-hand timer: its central minute hand keeps moving, but a pusher returns it to zero. Its dial gives special emphasis to 45 minutes, a football half, and historical accounts also connect it with timing telephone calls. “King of Unknown Watches” is a modern collector’s framing, not an established historical title.
What is the Montilier Telefoot?
The Telefoot was made by Montilier, a Swiss watch company associated with the village of Montilier near Murten/Morat. It is notable for combining a conventional time display with a central hand designed to reset rather than operate like the timing hand on a standard start-stop chronograph.
The dates in published accounts do not form a single settled chronology. Time2Tell reports a 1946 introduction and a 1945 patent; the Commune de Morat/Gemeinde Murten describes the patented development as dating to 1947. Separately, Mikrolisk’s trademark index records the Telefoot name for Montilier Watch Co. SA with a registration date of 17 December 1945. Trademark registration, patenting, and commercial introduction are different events, so these dates should not be treated as interchangeable.
How does the Telefoot work?
In the mechanism described by collectors and historical coverage, the central hand runs continuously and makes one revolution per hour, indicating minutes. Pressing the pusher resets that hand to zero; holding the pusher can keep it there. It does not function as a conventional start-stop timer whose hand is started, stopped, and then reset.

Fratello quotes watch expert Sébastien Chaulmontet describing it this way: “It wasn’t strictly a chronograph in the technically proven sense of the word, but a watch with a reset hand.” That distinction is the key to understanding the Telefoot: the pusher resets the indication rather than starting and stopping a separate timing interval.
Why does the dial emphasize 45 minutes?
The outer scale foregrounds the first 45 minutes, matching the length of a football half. The Commune de Morat/Gemeinde Murten publication describes the watch as intended for timing on football pitches as well as monitoring telephone-call duration. Time2Tell likewise connects the scale with football and telephone use.

Fratello discusses the scale’s three-minute intervals in the context of historical telephone billing. That is an interpretation presented in its collector account, rather than a separately established manufacturer statement.
Why is it called “The King of Unknown Watches”?
The phrase appears as the framing of Fratello’s 2023 collector article; the available historical accounts do not establish it as a period nickname or formal accolade. It aptly signals how unfamiliar the model is to many watch enthusiasts, but it should not be mistaken for an official designation or evidence of a measured production total.

Fratello’s author recounts a lengthy search before finding an example through a dealer and buying it. That account demonstrates collector interest and one described transaction, not how many watches survive, what they currently cost, or whether one is for sale now. No named production figure, surviving-watch count, or market-price statistic is established in the cited sources.
What remains uncertain about Telefoot variants?
Fratello’s account raises an unresolved question about a version without a small-seconds register: the author and Chaulmontet had not seen such an example and could not determine whether it was never produced or simply had not resurfaced. That is an open collector question, not a definitive variant history. The account’s discussion of a potentially unique lumed example concerns that feature on one watch, not the Telefoot model as a whole.

Can you still find a Montilier Telefoot?
A collector described buying one from a dealer, but that historical purchase does not establish current inventory. No current listing or price is verified here. If you encounter an example, confirm that it is the Montilier Telefoot and assess the individual watch’s condition and provenance rather than relying on a general rarity claim.
