A moonphase watch shows the Moon’s current phase; an astronomy watch, in the broader horological sense, can show that and other celestial information, such as sidereal time or a star chart. Choose a moonphase if the lunar display is what you want. Look at broader astronomical complications if you want your watch to indicate additional celestial cycles or sky information.
What is the difference between a moonphase watch and an astronomy watch?
A moonphase watch has an indication that tracks the lunar cycle and shows the phase of the Moon as seen from Earth. Audemars Piguet describes it as a display of the Moon’s current phase; Patek Philippe defines the complication as displaying the interval between successive new moons. Audemars Piguet’s astronomy explainer and Patek Philippe’s moonphase guide describe the function.

“Astronomy watch” is broader when used to describe horological functions rather than astronomy-inspired styling. A watch in this category may indicate moon phases, sidereal time, star positions, a sky chart, a perpetual calendar or the equation of time. It need not include all of them. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes celestial complications as capturing astronomical cycles including moon phases and the sidereal day. Its celestial complications explainer outlines the wider category.

Which type fits what you want to see?
| Your priority | What to look for |
|---|---|
| The Moon’s phase, with a distinctive dial display | A moonphase watch; it provides the lunar indication without requiring additional astronomical functions. |
| More celestial information than lunar phase alone | A watch with the specific complication you want, such as sidereal time, a star chart or equation of time. Check the individual model’s functions rather than relying on the broad “astronomy” label. |
| A straightforward indication you can set and maintain easily | Compare each model’s user guide and correction procedure. Setting restrictions and adjustment needs differ by movement. |
| A particular look or wearing experience | Compare legibility, dial layout, case dimensions, materials and style; neither category is inherently better on these grounds. |
A moonphase can be chosen for its visual interest as well as for reading the lunar cycle. Baume & Mercier notes that its appeal today is often aesthetic rather than practical. Its moonphase overview explains the display and a common mechanism.

How does a mechanical moonphase display work?
Mechanical designs vary. One common arrangement, described by Baume & Mercier, uses a 59-tooth wheel and a disc carrying two moons. A mechanical finger advances the disc once a day. The display approximates the synodic month—the interval between successive new moons—which the brand gives as 29.53 days. These figures describe the mechanism explained on that page, not every moonphase movement.
Other watches use different arrangements. TAG Heuer’s 2025 explanation discusses the Carrera Astronomer’s fully visible rotating moonphase display, a design distinct from the more common window showing a portion of a moon disc. TAG Heuer’s article describes that model’s display.

How do you set one, and how often might it need correction?
Use the manual for your exact watch. The corrector, sequence and safe adjustment times are model-specific, particularly when a watch has a calendar. Do not assume that a procedure for one brand applies to another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAs an example of brand-specific guidance, Patek Philippe instructs owners to consult the watch’s user guide, advance the lunar disc until the Moon appears centered and full, then count the days since the last full Moon and press the appropriate corrector that many times. Follow the instructions and any adjustment-time restrictions for your own model.

Baume & Mercier says the 59-tooth arrangement it describes may need adjustment approximately every three years. That is not a universal interval. Accuracy also varies by design: A. Lange & Söhne states that the moonphase display in its SAXONIA MOON PHASE, if correctly set and kept running continuously, deviates by one day in 122.6 years. This is a manufacturer claim for that model, not an independent test or a category-wide benchmark. Its page also identifies a 325-part self-winding calibre L086.5 and 852 stars on the lunar disc. A. Lange & Söhne’s model page gives those specifications.

What should you compare before choosing a watch?
- Functions: Identify whether lunar phase alone is enough, or whether you want another specific astronomical indication.
- Display: Check how the information is laid out and whether it is easy to read at a glance.
- Setting: Read the model’s instructions, including any limits on when to adjust the calendar or complication.
- Stated precision: Treat a manufacturer’s accuracy figure as a claim for the named model under its stated conditions, not as a typical result for the whole category.
- Practical fit: Compare case dimensions, materials, style and the maintenance expectations for the specific movement.
- Price and availability: Verify current details with the manufacturer or retailer. Regional lineups and availability can change.
