The steel watch is therefore best described as an exceptional auction-catalogued example, not proof that Rolex made a regular-production steel 6611. Antiquorum called it one of six examples; that count remains an auction-house claim, not a confirmed factory total.
What makes the ref. 6611 significant?
Rolex dates the Day-Date’s debut to 1956. The company says it was the first calendar wristwatch to show the weekday spelled out in full in a dial window alongside the date. In its official history, Rolex depicts the launch-era ref. 6611 in yellow gold. Rolex’s Day-Date history is the clearest manufacturer source for that baseline.
The first Day-Date references—6510, 6511 and 6611—sit apart from the later ref. 1803, which is the more familiar and more frequently encountered vintage example. Sotheby’s collector guide describes the earliest references as very rare and says they appear on the market less often than the 1803. That is useful market context, not a Rolex production record. Was the Rolex Day-Date ref. 6611 made in steel?
One steel watch attributed to ref. 6611 is recorded in Antiquorum’s 2002 catalog. The lot is described as a stainless-steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, with day and date displays and an Oyster bracelet. That establishes what Antiquorum catalogued; it does not, by itself, establish that Rolex offered steel 6611s as a standard model or confirm the watch’s full production history. The distinction matters because the manufacturer’s published history identifies the launch ref. 6611 as yellow gold, while the steel identification and rarity story come from an auction catalog. The sources available do not settle whether Rolex itself made or sold a standard-production steel ref. 6611. The most careful answer is that an auction house documented a steel watch attributed to the reference, while the broader production claim remains unverified.
How many steel 6611s were made?
Antiquorum described its circa-1959 steel example as “Made in six examples.” Treat six as the catalog’s claim about the watch’s rarity—not as an independently verified total from Rolex. The available sources do not provide factory records confirming that number, nor do they establish whether the six were production watches, special orders, prototypes or another category.

Phillips has called stainless-steel ref. 6611 arguably the “holy grail” of Day-Dates. That phrase conveys auction-house collector enthusiasm, not an official Rolex designation or an objective ranking. Phillips on the steel ref. 6611
What does the school engraving tell us?
Antiquorum reported an engraving on the caseback reading “Ecole d’Horlogerie de Genève – 1963” and presented the watch as a school prize. The catalog therefore records a potentially meaningful provenance story: an inscription naming Geneva’s watchmaking school and the year 1963. But the catalog is the source for both the inscription and the prize narrative; those details should not be treated as independently authenticated Rolex records.

The catalog’s circa-1959 date and 1963 dedication refer to this individual watch, not to the full ref. 6611 production timeline. Nor does the lot description alone establish that every component—including the bracelet—is original or contemporary.

Does “more precious than gold” mean it is worth more?
The phrase is best read as a statement about rarity and collector fascination, not a supported price comparison. The sources cited here do not establish a current market value for a steel 6611, or prove that every steel example is worth more than every gold 6611. A defensible valuation would require evidence about a specific watch, including its authenticity, condition, completeness, provenance and a dated sale result.

Other auction descriptions reinforce the rarity framing but do not settle steel production. Phillips has described ref. 6611 among the rarest Day-Date models; that general language, including descriptions of non-steel examples, should not be used as proof that Rolex produced steel watches.
